一、翻译题 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 1、   Friendship between animals sometimes seems stronger than that between men. In France, a man had to move to a new place. He had a dog and a cat, and 他爱他们两个But he thought that the cat would like to stay in the same house with  new owners. So he moved and took only the dog.

About three weeks later, the dog was suddenly lost. For several days, the man looked for his dog, but didn't find him. Then, seven weeks later, the dog came back but he was not alone. The cat was by his side.  They were tired and hungry after their long trip. And they never left each other again.

Another story is about goldfish. We usually think fish are cold-hearted, but sometimes we may be wrong. 一个朋友得去另一个国家去工作 So I took her pet goldfish and put it in a bowl with mine. They two lived together for six months. When the friend came back, she tookher fish home. Then, I found my goldfish act differently. It hit on the side of the bowl. The next morning he died. Later that day, my friend called to say that her goldfish died, too. Did they die becausethey were sad? I believe so.

  • 23、“Did you hear what happened to Allen last Friday?” Linda whispers(低语) to Tony. Feeling excited, Tony says, “You bet I did. Sam told me two days ago.”

Who are Linda and Tony talking about? It could be anybody. I can tell you that what they are saying is not nice and not even true. Still, there are so many students like Linda and Tony here at Linton High School. Many of their conversations are gossips(流言蜚语). I have noticed two results of gossip: it can hurt people and it can cause social pressure in a group.

An important bad result of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic—being in love, trouble at home, or even dropping out—that a person would like to keep as a secret. The more embarrassing(尴尬的) the secret is, the more exciting the gossip sounds. Probably the worst type of gossip is the complete lie. People often think gossipers as just not friendly, but the rumors(谣言) from their mouths hurt others a lot.

Gossip can also have another result: it sets up some unwritten(不成文的), unspoken rules about how people should act. This means that if everybody around you is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can tell that wearing or saying something similar will get you into the same kind of trouble. Such small daily things will never appear in any book to tell you about what you should or shouldn’t do.

If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? That answer is that it gives us satisfaction. Sharing the latest rumor can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don’t. Similarly, hearing it can make a person feel like part of the “in-group”. In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority(优越感).

There are hundreds of cases showing that gossips can cause pressure and even more serious problems. And you’ll never know how people will react(做出反应) to the gossips in different situations. So the next time you want to gossip, think about what result it might have.

【1】The writer uses a conversation at the beginning of the passage to ________.

    A.lead to the topic

    B.tell his opinion

    C.describe the characters

    D.surprise the readers

【2】In the writer’s opinion, many people like to gossip because it ________.

A.stops them from being hurt by others

B.helps them to make more friends

C.makes them better at telling stories

D.gives them a feeling of satisfaction

【3】We can infer from the passage that ________.

A.Linda and Tony are just a very small part of the students who like to gossip

B.Cindy may not keep long hair after hearing her friends saying it was silly

C.gossips are usually about the true stories that a person wants to share with others

D.sharing and hearing gossips can make a person have a feeling of satisfaction

【4】What advice does the writer give in the last paragraph?

    A.Stay away from gossipers.

    B.Never become a gossiper.

    C.Don’t let gossip become lies.

    D.Gossip when it’s necessary.
