四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   When you think of Scotland, what comes to your mind? Maybe the beautiful green scenery (风景) or the national dish of haggis (羊杂碎). But what makes a Scot stand out straight away is the national dress of Scotland: the kilt.

The kilt is a special dress. Most Scottish men wear it. The dress dates back to more than 500 years ago. In the 16th century, the Scottish highlands were wet. It was difficult for soldiers to move around without getting stuck (困住) in the mud. The kilt was made to give them an advantage over their enemy. Kilts are very flexible, giving soldiers more freedom to move in. What's more, you can use the kilt as a blanket for those cold nights.

In modern times, the kilt has come to stand for Scottish  pride, culture and patriotism (爱国心). People wear kilts for special events, such as ceremonies and the traditional Scottish sporting event known as the Highland games.

But that's not all. The colors of a kilt show your family history. That's because each color stands for a different Scottish family. So a Scotsman is not only wearing the national dress of his country, but also the pride of his family. There's a famous saying in Scotland, "A man in a kilt is a man and a half."

1The underlined word "flexible" in the passage means "________" in Chinese.

    A.保暖的 B.优雅的 C.灵活的

2The kilt is a special dress because ________.

A.it gave the soldier many advantages over their enemy.

B.it has many colors and looks wonderful

C.it stands for Scottish pride, culture and patriotism

3"A man in a kilt is a man and a half" means ________.

A.a kilt can make a man look stronger

B.a man in a kilt looks a real man

C.a man in a kilt looks taller than the others

4Which of the following is Not True according to the passage?

A.The kilt was first made more than five hundred years ago.

B.Scotsmen wear the kilts for special events whether in the past or in modern times.

C.A Scotsman wears the kilts not only for his country but for his family.

5What is the second paragraph mainly about? ________.

A.The origin (起源) of the kilt

    B.How to wear a kilt

    C.Kilts in wartime

  • 25、   You’re rushing to school and a man ahead of you suddenly falls down. Do you stop to help? In a study of bystanders, it was found that some people look away or keep on walking rather than stop and get involved.

“There is an inclination(倾向) to decide that no action is needed,” says Ervin Staub, a psychologist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, who studies the role of bystanders. “ The first thoughts that come into your mind often keep you from offering help.”

Time and again, good and caring people fail to come to the aid of others. They know they should act and yet, for reasons they themselves don’t understand, people sometimes don’t respond. Longtime researchers of bystander behavior continue to struggle with the question, “Why?”

One thing we do know is that the more ambiguous a situation is, the less likely people are to help. Let’s say you see vapors(水汽) coming out of a building. You ask yourself, “Is it steam(蒸汽) or smoke?” If you are not sure, you look to other people for a clue about how to react. If you see other people doing nothing, you think, “Of course, that’s just steam.” You don’t want it to be smoke, because then you would have to do something about it.

Another one is known as “ the bystander effect”. This says that the more people there are observing an emergency, the less responsible each one of them personally feels. For example, if you are the only person in the world who can act to save someone in a dangerous situation, you are more likely to act. However, if you are one of 100,000 people who could save the situation, you would be happier if one of the other 99,999 people did it!

“If you notice trouble, force yourself to stop and judge the situation instead of walking on,” says Ervin Staub. Then try to involve other people; you don’t have to take on all the responsibility of being helpful. According to Staub, it is sometimes just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, “It looks like we should do something.” Once you take action, most people will follow you and also offer help.

1Ervin Staub probably agrees that _____.

    A. the bystanders force them to solve the troubles

    B. people’s first thoughts usually prevent them from helping

    C. the researchers often lead to the embarrassment

    D. the person next to you often asks you to deal with emergency

2The word “ambiguous” in Paragraph 4 probably means “_____”.

    A. difficult B. dangerous C. unclear D. unpleasant

3The writer uses “ the bystander effect” to show that _____.

    A. people usually think others a lot before the difficulties

    B. people like to carry out the responsibility in emergency

    C. people often share their ideas when they’re in dangerous situations

    D. people are likely to behave in the same way as most other people do

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

    A. Is it important to offer help?

    B. Is it difficult to get involved?

    C. To stand there or take actions?

    D. To change the decision or stick it?

  • 27、There are several ways you can find out about the countries and places you wish to visit. You can talk to friends who have traveled to the places, you can go and see a color film about them, or you can read travel books.

It seems that there are three kinds of travel books. The first are those that give a personal, subjective(主观的) idea of travels which the writer has got himself. These books can be useful if the writers share their traveling experiences with others. The second kind are those books which give objective( 客观的) information of things to be done and seen. If a cultured person has written such a book about the facts of a place, then it is more useful. The third kind are those books which are called "a guide" to some place or other. If they are good, they will describe and explain the place in detail. Like the first kind, they can be interesting and exciting, but their main purpose is to help the reader plan his travel in the most practical way.

Whatever kind of travel book you choose, you must make sure that the book does not describe everything as interesting, exciting or fantastic. You must also keep an open eye on its date of publication(出版) because travel is a very practical matter and many things change quickly in the 21st century. Finally, you should make sure that it's easy to find the useful information for your travel.
