二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、An old man and his son were driving their donkey to a neighboring fair to sell him. They had not gone far when they met with a troop of women collected round a well, talking and laughing "Look there,” cried one of them, “did you ever see such fellows, to be trudging along the road on foot when they might ride?” The old man hearing this, quickly made his son mount the donkey and continued to walk along merrily by his side.

Presently they came up to a group of old men in earnest debate. "There," said one of them "it proves what I was saying. What respect is shown to old age in these days? Do you see that idle lad riding while his old father has to walk? Get down, you young scapegrace, and let the old man rest his exhausted body. “Upon this the old man made his son dismount, and got up himself.

In this manner they had not proceeded far when they met a company of women and children: “Why, you lazy old fellow," cried several tongues at once, “how can you ride upon the beast, while that poor little young man there can hardly keep pace by the side of you?” The Miller immediately took up his son behind him.

They had now almost reached the town. “pray, honest friend,” said a citizen, “is that donkey your own?" “Yes,” replied the old man. “O, one would not have thought so,” said the other, “by the way you load him. Why, you two fellows are better able to carry the poor beast than he you.” So, alighting with his son, they tied the legs of the donkey together and with the help of a pole struggled to carry him on their shoulders over a bridge near the entrance to the town.

This entertaining sight brought the people in crowds to laugh at it, till the donkey, not liking the noise nor the strange handling that he was subject to, broke the ropes that bound him and falling off the pole, fell into the river.

  • 22、A few years ago, I was leaving the kennel (养狗场) where I worked, only to find a baby goat at the end of the driveway. The kennel’s owners are well-known animal rescuers and I figured someone outside left him over the fence.

I’m an animal lover and I’ve brought home dogs, cats, horses, chickens and fish, but never goats. The tiny kid was too cute to resist. I named him Quincy, and with the help of some experienced friends, bottle-fed him in my bathroom. Quincy proved to be quite special. When he was about a week old, l tapped my fingers on the bathroom floor and said, “Lie down.” I was amazed when he dropped down. I was even more amazed when he did it three times in a row.

A quick study, Quincy learned to lie down, bow and turn in a circle in no time. He is house-trained, jumps in the back of my SUV when I say “load up”, and spends the day wandering with my dogs whom he considered as his brothers and sisters. He knows he name of everything I feed him apples, water, carrots and strawberries.

I love lo train animals and often take my dogs lo shows where they can perform their tricks. Quincy did bis first show when he was just six weeks old. He knew only a few tricks then, but he did them perfectly and never misbehaved or got nervous in front of the crowd.

Now he has a whole inventory. He’ll shake hooves (蹄), come when called, walk on a rope, wave, smile for the camera, and more. Quincy and my dogs perform regularly at schools, nursing homes and charity events, Quincy can even “read” his tricks off hint cards, which always earns the most applause.

It’s hard to believe that the goat kid nobody wanted turned out to be one of the smartest animals I’ve ever had.

【1】What made the author decide to bring the baby goat home?

    A.The advice of his friends.

B.His strong desire to keep a pet.

C.His love for the little goat.

D.The request of the kennel’s owner.

【2】Which word can best describe Quiney?

    A.Lucky.

    B.Strong.

    C.Intelligent.

    D.Hard-working.

【3】What can we know about the author?

    A.He is an animal lover.

B.He has kept a pet goat before.

C.He makes a living by training animals.

D.He always takes care of Quincy on his own.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

    A.Quincy: The Show Goat

    B.Quincy: A Poor Creature

  • 23、In the summer of 1978 an English farmer was driving his tractor through a field of wheat when he discovered that some of his wheat was lying flat on the ground. The fattened (压平的) wheat formed a circle about six meters across. Around this circle were four smaller circles of flattened wheat. The five circles were in a formation like five dots. During the following years, farmers in England found the strange circles in their fields more and more often.

The circles are called “crop circles” because they appear in the fields of grain - usually wheat or corn. The grain in the circles lies flat on the ground but never broken; it continues to grow, and farmers can later harvest it. Farmers always discover the crop circles in the morning, so the circles probably form at night. They appear only in the months from May to September.

At first, people thought that the circles were ahoax. Probably young people were making them as a joke, or farmers were making them to attract tourists. To prove that the circles were a hoax, people tried to make circles exactly like the ones that farmer had found. They couldn’t do it. They couldn’t enter a field of grain without leaving tracks(痕迹), and they couldn’t flatten the grain without breaking it.

Many people believe that beings from outer space are making the circle to communicate with us from far away and that the crop circles are messages from them.

Scientists who have studied the crop circles suggested several possibilities. Some scientists say that a downward rush of wind leads to the formation of the circles - the same downward rush of air that sometimes causes an airplane to crash. Other scientists say that forces within the earth cause the circles to appear. There is one problem with all these scientific explanations: crop circles often appear in formations, like the five-dot formation. It is hard to believe that any natural force could form those.

1In the summer of 1978, an English farmer discovered in his field that __________.

A.some of his wheat had been damaged

B.his grain was growing up in circles.

C.his grain was moved into several circles

D.some of his wheat had fallen onto the ground.

2According to the text, the underlined part “hoax” (in the 3rdparagraph) probably means __________.

A.an attempt made to fool people

B.a special way to plant crops

C.a research on the force of winds

D.an experiment for the protection of crops.

3Which of the following may prove that the crop circles are not made by man?

A.The farmer couldn’t step out of the field.

B.The farmers couldn’t make the circles round.

C.The farmers couldn’t leave without footprints.

D.The farmers couldn’t keep the wheat straight up.

4A proper title for this passage is ___________.

    A.An Unsolved Mystery

    B.Strange Flying Objects

    C.The Power of Natural Forces

    D.The discovery of Strange Circles

  • 24、“The Lord of the Rings”, one of the best sellers in the new millennium千年, was made up of three parts——“The Fellowship of the Ring”, “Two Towers”, and “The Return of the King”. Millions upon millions of people have read it in over 25 different languages, but fewer know about the author and the history of the composition of the creative masterwork.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in South Africa in 1892. His parents died when he was a child. Living in England with his aunt, Tolkien and his cousins made up his mind to play languages, a hobby that led to Tolkien’s becoming skilled in Welsh, Greek, Gothic, Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon.

After graduating from Oxford, Tolkien served in World War I. In 1917, while recovering from trench fever, he began composing the mythology(神话) for The Rings. As a professor of Anglo-Saxon in 1930s at Oxford, Tolkien was part of an informal discussion group called the Inklings, which included several writers. The group was soon listening to chapters of Tolkien’s imaginative work The Hobbit”.

Hobbit was a name Tolkien created for a local people that could best be described as half-sized members of the English rural(乡村的)class. Hobbits live in hillside holes. One of them, Bilbo Baggins, looks for treasures with a group of dwarves(侏儒). On the way, he meets the twisted, pitiful creature Gollum, from whom he sees a golden ring that makes the holder invisible.

One of Tolkien’s students persuaded her employer, publisher Allen & Unwin, to look at a draft(草稿). The chairman of the firm, Stanley Unwin, thought that the best judge for a children’s book would be his ten-year-old son. The boy earned a shilling for reporting back that the adventure was exciting, and “The Hobbit” was published in 1937.

It sold so well that Unwin asked for a continuation. Over a dozen years later, in 1954, Tolkien produced “The Lord of the Rings”, a series of books so creative that they hold readers—new and old —after their publication.

CHobbit was a social group of people who lived in old castles.

DHobbit was a local people who were very tall and strong.
