  • 21、After years of research and test, the hybrid car was developed and put on the market. It’s an interesting and exciting new improvement in today’s quality of the air we breathe and save our natural resources.

The quality of our air is affected by many different things. But one of the largest sources of air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and gas which are used to power a car’s engine. The EPA has set national standards to help control the level of harmful pollutants sent off into the air, and the automobile industry has acted by producing a hybrid car that uses less gas and therefore causes less pollution.

A hybrid car is a combination of a regular car that runs on gas and an electric car that is battery powered. Some people tend to think that since the hybrid car is partly electric, you have to plug it in to charge it. But that’s not how it works. Through the energy that is produced when the car’s brakes are used. This is referred to as “regenerative braking”(再生制动), because it generates electricity.

Although the hybrid car still runs on gas most of the time, this help it use less gas than a regular car. When a driver stops at a traffic light, the engine automatically shuts off to save fuel. Then, as soon as the driver puts the car in gear(处于正常工作状态) and touches the gas pedal, the engine starts back up.

Have you ever ridden in a car with someone who ran out of gas? That probably wouldn’t happen if you were riding in a hybrid car. It flashed a warning reading: “YOU ARE NOW OUT OF GAS!” Then the electric power supply energy in to let the driver travel a few more miles to a gas station.

【1】According to the passage, the underlined word “hybrid” (in Paragraph 1) refers to ________.

    A.a high-tech discovery

    B.energy-saving

    C.a new invention

D.a new kind for the combination of two things

【2】The EPA is important to our environment because ________.

    A.they designed hybrid cars

B.they forbade the burning of fossil fuels

C.they set important rules that help control pollution

D.their main purpose is to produce non-polluting cars

  • 22、Gardeners are often puzzled by the sudden appearance of an unusual orchid(兰花) or sometimes are disappointed that their annuals have vanished. Scientists have discovered that some British flowers can lie dormant (休眠的) under the ground for up to 20 years, coming out to bloom only when the conditions are just right. Orchids seem particularly good at being dormant for years at a time, the scientists discovered.

Michael Hutchings, Professor of Ecology at the University of Suss, said: “Being underground means they cannot receive sunshine, neither flower nor reproduce. And yet this study has shown that many plants in a large number of species frequently go through dormancy (休眠). Many of these species have found ways to overcome the loss of sunshine during dormancy, especially by gradually developing their ability to get what they need from soil. This allows them to survive and even grow well during dormant periods.”

The research found that dormancy occurs when the weather is poor, or there is a new threat from animals or competing plants. Sometimes winters are so mild that the plant does not realize that spring has begun. Dormancy in seeds has been widely known about and studied for years, but the dormancy in adult plants is far less well-known and understood.

The study, led by Professor Richard Shefferson in University of Tokyo, is the first detailed analysis of the causes. Dormancy appears to be more common near the equator (赤道), where threats from factors such as disease, competition, animals and fire are more severe. Co-author Dr. Eric Menges said:“ In those areas, it is most suitable for plants to remain dormant and then to grow when favourable conditions exist for growth and flowering. ”

    A.Adapted.

    B.Shrunk.

    C.Disappeared.

    D.Woken.

【2】What does Professor Michael Hutchings mainly talk about in the second paragraph?

    A.What results dormancy leads to.

B.How the orchid developed their ability to get energy.

C.Why some species can survive terrible conditions.

D.How the orchid lives through dormant periods.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Dormancy in plants is common in regions along the equator.

B.Orchids are the only plants that can be dormant for years.

C.Dormancy in seeds is far less well-known and understood.

D.Most gardeners don’t want to plant orchids.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Survival of the Fittest

    B.Dormant Flowers Underground for Years

C.Why Some British Flowers Stay Dormant

D.New Research on Dormancy in Orchids

  • 23、We live in the age of envy. Career envy, kitchen envy, children envy, food envy, holiday envy. You name it, there’s an envy for it. Human beings have always felt what Aristotle defined in the fourth century BC as pain at the sight of another’s good fortune. But with the coming of social media, says Ethan Kross, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, “envy is being taken to an extreme.” We are constantly bombarded by “Photoshopped lives”, he says, “and that applies a toll (严重的不良影响) on us the likes of which we have never experienced in the history of our species. And it is not particularly pleasant.”

Clinical psychologist Rachel Andrew says she is seeing more and more envy in her consulting room from people who “can’t achieve the lifestyle they want but which they see others have”. Our use of social media platforms, she says, amplifies this deeply disturbing psychological discord. “I think what social media has done is make everyone accessible for comparison,” she explains. “In the past, people might have just envied their neighbors, but now we can compare ourselves with everyone across the world.”

And those comparisons are now much less realistic, Andrew continues: “We all know that images can be filtered, that people are presenting the very best take on their lives.” We carry our envy amplification device around in our pockets, we sleep with it next to our pillows, and it tempts us 24 hours a day, the moment we wake up even if it is the middle of the night. “What I notice is that most of us can intellectualize what we see on social media platforms — we know that these images and narratives that are presented aren’t real, we can talk about it and rationalize it — but on an emotional level, it’s still pushing buttons. If those images or narratives tap into what we desire, but what we don’t have, then it becomes very powerful.”

No age group or social class is immune from envy, according to Andrew. In her consulting room she sees young women, self-conscious about how they look, who begin to follow certain accounts to find hair inspiration or makeup techniques, and end up envying the women they follow and feeling even worse about themselves. But she also sees the same pattern among older businessmen and women who start out looking for strategies and tips on social media websites, and then struggle to accept what they find, which is that some people seem to be more successful than they are. “Equally, it can be friends and family who bring out those feelings of envy, around looks, lifestyle, careers and parenting — because somebody is always doing it better on social media,” she says.

【1】Which of the following is true about “the age of envy” in Paragraph 1?

A.Watching another’s good fortune used to be a pleasant thing to do

B.Human beings first learn about envy in the fourth century BC

C.Social media posts have become the source of envy today

D.People in the time of Aristotle don’t envy others’ lives

【2】Rachel Andrew believes that the source of envy in her consulting room is________.

B.the wish to have a better life than your next door neighbor

C.the desire to look cool in every social media photo

D.the lifestyle that is most chased after by others

【3】According to Rachel Andrew, which of the following is a fact about envy?

A.Envy doesn’t usually apply to our family and close friends.

B.The older we get, the less likely we feel jealous about other people.

C.We get jealous when other people become the focus on social media.

D.Envy is an emotion that even rational people may not be able to avoid.

【4】After “Age of Envy”, which of the following comes as the best subtitle for this passage?

A.How to Overcome Social Media Jealousy

B.Why Social Media Affects Our Mental Health

C.How Social Media Can Increase Feelings of Envy

  • 24、   HEMLOCK, MI --When classes resume at Hemlock's K.C. Ling Elementary School next week, the students will have a brand new playground complete with gaga ball pit(), Boogie Board, slides and more.

About 50 volunteers worked together to build the new playground Sunday, Aug. 19. The "community build" was the culmination of nearly a year of fundraising, said Sarah Baird, a parent and chairwoman of the playground committee.

"It felt amazing yesterday to see everybody come together," Baird said Monday. "It will be all set and ready for them for their first day of school."

In the end, with the support of the community, Hemlock Semiconductor, Saginaw Community Foundation, Morley Family Foundation, Dow Corning Foundation and other donors, the group raised $70,000.
