  • 21、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need.

Have you ever walked outside thinking it was one temperature but quickly discovered it felt colder? That is because of the “wind chill” effect.

Wind chill is how cold people and animals feel when. they are outside, not the actual temperature on the thermometer(温度计).1When the wind is strong, your body quickly loses heat, making the temperature of your skin drop.

When scientists first started calculating wind chill, they used research done in 1945 by explorers to Antarctica who measured, how quickly water froze outside. But water freezes faster than exposed skin, so the wind chill index based on that data wasn't accurate.

2Twelve volunteers were placed in a chilled wind tunnel. Equipment was stuck to their faces to measure the heat flow from their cheeks, forehead, nose and chin while they walked three miles per hour on a treadmill(跑步机).

The experiment showed how quickly exposed skin can be damaged, particularly unprotected areas like your fingers, toes, the tip of your nose and your ear lobes.3Signs you might have frostbite(冻疮)are when the skin turns white or pale and you lose feeling in that area.

The information collected from the volunteers helped scientists work out the math to compute wind chill. It involves wind speed and air temperature.

If, for example, the temperature outside is zero degrees Fahrenheit and the wind is blowing at 15 miles per hour, the wind chill is calculated at 19 degrees below zero. At that wind chill temperature, exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes.

4Air caught between the clothes will keep you warm. The best cold-weather coats have head coverings made of woven material that keep out water. So next time the temperature drops and you want to play outside, listen to your parents-when they tell you to wrap up warm.

A.In fact, 40 percent of your body heat can be lost through your head.

B.It is based on how quickly your body loses heat when it is exposed to wind and cold.

C.Unlike temperature, wind chill has no universally agreed upon standard definition or measurement.

D.Experts dislike “wind chill”, as it is inaccurate and was never intended for widespread use.

E.About ten years ago, the US government began to measure wind chill more precisely by testing how quickly people's skin froze.

F.Experts advise that in cold weather you wear loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing, worn on top of each other.

  • 22、   Barcelona’s famous Segrada Familia is finally set to get a building license to work on the still uncompleted church.

This UNESCO World Heritage basilica(长方形基督教堂)which is Barcelona’s most visited tourist attractionbegan building in 1882 based on a design by architect Francisco Lozano. Howeverwhen he stepped downarchitect Antoni Gaudi took over the design in 1883.The building won’t be finished until 2026—one hundred years after the architect was killed by a streetcar in the city. His body was buried in a room under the floor of the Sagrada Familia.

To get its paperwork rubber stampedthe church authorities have agreed to finally pay the government a 36 million fee for a building permit. Gaudi was told to get the paperwork processedbut the architect failed to do so—proceeding with construction. The money from the church’s permit will be used to upgrade transport links and beautify the area.

Gaudi played an active role in directing the construction of the Sagrada Familia until his death in 1926.He would often request that work be modified and adjusted until it was exactly what he had in mind. However, interpretation of the designs by present day architects is particularly challenging because of the nature of the existing designs.

Gaudi and his works have become symbols of Barcelonathe capital city of Catalonianortheast Spain. The unfinished building is called a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and it is perhaps the most unique and mysterious building in the style ever constructed. The popularity of the site with tourists has helped fund the push to complete the church and pay for the paperwork.

1What do we know about the Segrada Familia?

A.It has been completely constructed. B.It was first designed by Antoni Gaudi.

C.It will get a building permit in 2026. D.It began to be built 138 years ago.

2What can we infer about Antoni Gaudi?

A.He wished to be buried in the church. B.He is remembered as a great architect.

C.He didn’t know a permit was necessary. D.He is to blame for the unfinished church.

3What makes the Segrada Familia so popular?

A.Its unusual design style. B.Its two famous architects.

C.Its special building materials. D.Its illegal construction paperwork.

4The church managed to pay for the license _________.

A.in the support of the government B.by reducing construction costs

C.with the aid of tourist income D.through donations from architects

  • 23、Researchers are finding new ways to save snakebite victims.Experts discussed the latest findings during a recent conference.

Scientists in Australia have shown that a chemical called nitric oxide could increase the chances of surviving a poisonous snakebite. The scientists injected rats with a deadly amount of snake venom. Then they rubbed an ointment(软膏)containing nitric oxide on the skin around the injection site. The study found that the rats lived about one-third longer than if nitric oxide had not been used. But the treatment had to be started very quickly.

Dirk van Helden led the research. He says the nitric oxide ointment also showed promise in humans. The study appeared earlier this year in the journal Nature Medicine.Scientists say the findings could help save many lives.A recent study found that poisonous snakes cause as many as ninety-four thousand deaths worldwide each year. But Ulrich Kuch of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Center in Frankfurt,Germany, says that number appears to be low.

Mr Kuch says many deaths could be prohibited if snakebite victims are treated correctly, but they often go to traditional healers or do not seek any help at all.He said,“Sometimes it’s because there is no treatment available—no antivenom(抗蛇毒血清),which is the specific(特殊的)drug to treat snakebites—or health care staff do not know how to treat snakebites, and sometimes it’s because transportation to get to a health facility is not available or too expensive.”

Here is no single antivenom that can be used to treat all snakebites. The antivenom must be specific to the kind of snake that bit the person. In some countries the treatment is costly, while in others there is no such treatment.

  • 24、   It was only after her death from Bright's disease on May 15, 1886 that Emily Dickinson enjoyed recognition for her poetic accomplishme. A limited volume of her works appeared in 1890, but it was Thomas H. Johnson's release of her complete body of poetry that made her works receive real acclaim. He published 1,775 of her poems in 1955 in a volume entitled The Poems of Emily Dickinson.

Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, MA in 1830. The Dickinson family was well known in the community for their contribution to politics and education. Dickinson lived most of her life with her grandfather who was famous for having founded the Amherst Academy in 1814 and later Amherst College in 1821.

Emily Dickinson led a reclusive life, but her childhood was a happy one. She had the privilege of being educated at some of the most outstanding women schools in her time and devoted herself to reading all kinds of books.

It was during her college years that Emily started writing. Some of her poems were published with the help of her female friends. However, the first serious attempt at having her poems published failed for her being rejected by The Atlantic magazine. This led the self-conscious poetess to believe that the public would never care for her works, and thus she never attempted to have any of her works published again. After the Civil War, Dickinson withdrew from society and had little contact outside of Amherst.

Dickinson was very concerned with the subject of nature. Her writings are complex, and for many years scholars have searched for romantic inspiration, but have not yet understood her works. What is clear, however, is that her works can't just simply describe something in terms of a narrative style.

Without doubt, Dickinson's works have greatly influenced and continue to influence modern poetry. In her time, her writing style was unique given that it included the use of dashes and capitalized nouns. None of her works rhymed, and she used unusual comparisons when referring to events and situations. This unconventional method of writing has made her one of the most innovative poets of the 19th century.

1Which of the following best explains "acclaim" underlined in the first paragraph?

    A.Approval. B.Enthusiasm. C.Reference. D.Apology.

2What did Dickinson do during her childhood?

A.She practiced writing with the help of her friends.

B.She passed her poems to magazines.

C.She spent much time on politics and education.

    D.She studied in good schools.

3What do we know about Dickinson's poems?

A.They are easy for readers to understand.

B.They make much difference to modern poetry.

C.They inspire modern naturalists to study nature.

D.They rhyme well and include many comparisons.

4What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Causes of Emily Dickinson's Failure

    B.Features of Emily Dickinson's Poems

C.A Brief Introduction to Emily Dickinson and Her Works

D.Reasons for Emily Dickinson's Becoming World Famous
