二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The human spine doesn’t just help us stand up straight. Inside the spine is the spinal cord (脊髓), which carries important information between the head and the lower part of the body. This information moves around as tiny, short bursts of electricity which travel between the brain and the other parts of the body.

The legs and feet send “sense” information to the brain, saying they’re hurt or hot. And the brain sends signals to the lower body, perhaps telling the legs to walk, dance, or sit down. Towards the bottom of the spine, nerves leave the spine. Different nerves help control different groups of muscles in the legs.

When someone’s spinal cord is hurt, this important pathway can get damaged. When that happens, a person is “paralyzed”, and he can’t move his legs. Now scientists in Lausanne, Switzerland have given three paralyzed men the ability to walk again. Each of the three men had damaged their spinal cords in motorcycle accidents and couldn’t move their legs.

To walk again, the man had operation. A special device was placed directly on the lower part of their spinal cords, below their injury. The implant (植入物) contained sixteen electrodes, which are small objects that electricity can pass through. The researchers made sure the electrodes on the implant were lined up with the nerves that control the leg muscles. To begin with, the scientists controlled the implants from a computer. Just hours after the implants were first used, all three men were taking steps, with support.

In the past, scientists have had some success with similar implants in the lower spine. But this research is different. The patients’ brains aren’t sending messages to their legs. The researchers used computers to set modes of movement—like taking a step—that would work well with each patient. The patients then used the computer to choose the pattern they wanted. That caused the implant, and the muscles to move in the chosen way. Over time, the men were able to walk entirely on their own, using a special walker with buttons to trigger each leg.

The solution isn’t perfect. It’s very expensive, it requires difficult surgery, and the patients can’t walk without the system. But the scientists are expecting that in the future, this technology will allow many paralyzed people to begin to walk again in just hours.

【1】How does the spinal cord function in one’s body?

A.By sending out signals to the lower body.

B.By controlling different groups of muscles.

C.By providing electricity for the body.

D.Passing on information between body parts.

【2】What makes the new implants special compared to the previous ones?

A.They receive messages from patients’ brains.

B.They work well by successful operations.

C.They are driven by computers to aid the patients to walk around.

D.They cause the muscles to function in a specific way.

【3】What attitude does the author hold to the new implant?

    A.Critical.

    B.Objective.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Favorable.

【4】What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?

    A.To compare different implants.

B.To show the important role of spinal cord in our bodies.

C.To inform us of a new invented implant.

D.To identify the weaknesses of former implants.

  • 22、Yellow fever began to spread in Brazil in 2016. More than 2,000 people got sick, and 750 died. The disease is also severely threatening the golden lion tamarin, a little monkey, living in the rainforest of southeastern Brazil. The disease killed about one-third of its population, which was small even before the outbreak. So, scientists created a vaccine to protect the monkeys.

The vaccination campaign began last year. But vaccinating animals to protect their species from extinction is a new idea, which represents a change in thinking among supporters of wildlife conservation and has raised questions about how far humans should go to save wild animas. Historically, conservationists have believed that humans should not interfere directly with wildlife. A traditional saying in the world of conservation work is “Leave it as is.”

However, Tony Goldberg, a scientist and animal doctor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, believes in vaccinating wild animals when possible. “There are people who say we shouldn’t touch nature and that we shouldn’t alter anything. But really, there are no unspoiled natural habitats left.” he said. “People are realizing they have to do something.” he added. “This epidemic moved very quickly from north to south, across the country-no wildlife does that. It’s people. They cross vast distances in buses, trains, planes. They bring the disease with them. We realized that in five years, we could lose the entire population if we did nothing.”

The vaccine led to antibodies in the tested monkeys and caused no harm, the scientists found. So far, about 300 have been vaccinated and are reported to be doing well. Tests show that more than 90 percent of the monkeys have immunity or resistance to the virus since vaccination.

The outbreak of yellow fever is no longer a big problem for the monkeys, and their population is starting to come back. But even with the success of the vaccine program, scientists are still not sure about creating vaccines for other animals. Jacob Negrey, a biologist who studies monkeys, wondered about unpredictable effects of such wildlife treatment. He explained that you might create a treatment that helps one kind of animal but hurts another.

【1】What caused moneys to get infected with yellow fever?

    A.Human activities.

    B.Loss of their habitat.

    C.Convenient transportation.

D.The development of Science and technology.

    【2】What happened to vaccinated monkeys?

A.They are resistant to all viruses.

B.They are no longer endangered animals.

C.There is an increase in their population.

D.Some of them are harmed by the vaccine.

【3】What’s Jacob’s attitude to creating vaccine for other animals?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Optimistic.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Neutral.

【4】What’s the best title of this passage?

    A.Vaccinating animals: a heated debate.

B.Yellow fever: a threat to monkeys.

    C.Protecting moneys: a top priority.

    D.Vaccine: a blessing for monkeys.

  • 23、   We know that China is the largest and fastest-growing consumer market in the world. What is less well understood are the forces that shape consumerism in the world’s most populous country. In my view, there are some social and cultural aspects at play that drive consumer spending.

Consumerism is related to freedom. To have a choice means to have consumer choice. You are what you consume. Consumption is an expression of self. It allows you to explore the world through its products,to experiment with lifestyle choicesand to do so safely and anonymously (匿名地). You might never get to Francebut you can try French wine. California might be faraway, but you can go to Shanghai Disneyland. Indeedthe enthusiasm for choice is reflected in the enthusiasm Chinese consumers have for online shopping.

Consumerism is a statement of success. American economist Thorstein Veblen popularized the concept of “conspicuous consumption”. When consumption is no longer driven only by need, it becomes a way of making a statement that you have disposable (可支配的) income and you can—at least in certain respects—enjoy life on your terms. Simple pleasures—a pair of Nikesa smartphonedesigner clothing become statements of personal identity.

Collective experience is focused. We like participating in group events. FOMO, the Fear of Missing Out, goes beyond cultures. But I suspect this trend is stronger in China than in the West because Confucian culture does not celebrate outliers as the West does. Social media reinforces (强化) this collective pattern so that shopping and dining are shared experiences. Opinions are crowd-sourced. And the merchants reinforce this pattern by supporting holiday sales, group buying, and other promotions.

Successful brands in China are able to handle most or all of the above considerations. The consumer must not only be delighted with your product. The journey of the consumer must also respect these socio-cultural aspects.

1What's mainly talked about in the passage?

    A.China's population growing wealthier.

    B.China's fast-growing market economy.

    C.Chinese socio-cultural influences on consumerism.

D.Chinese consumers' preference of quality to quantity.

2What does paragraph 2 focus on?

A.Shopping online is a new experience.

B.Consumption can be a reflection of freedom.

C.Foreign products can be purchased in China.

D.Shopping around the world is a favorable choice.

3What does the underlined words “conspicuous consumption” in paragraph 3 mean?

A.The ability to cover one's real needs in daily life.

B.Spending money in order to keep up with others.

C.The purchase of expensive items to display status.

D.Buying abundant goods to acquire personal identity.

4Why does the author think FOMO is stronger in China?

A.Social media play a bigger role in their lives.

B.Following the trend is what people like better.

C.Chinese people have less contact with the strangers,

D.Confucian culture is less likely to appreciate outsiders.

  • 24、Three Feet From Gold

Darby’s uncle was caught by the “gold fever” in the gold-rush days, and went west to dig and grow rich. After months of labor, he was rewarded by the discovery of the shining ore (矿石). He needed machinery to bring the ore to the surface. So, with the “strike”, he returned home. And with the help of Darby, he borrowed a lot of money. After buying the machinery and having it shipped, Uncle and Darby went back to work the mine.

The first car of ore was mined. And the returns proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Uncle and Darby!

Then something happened! The vein (矿脉) of gold ore disappeared! They drilled on, but all in vain. Finally, they decided to quit and sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars. The junk man called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating. The engineer’s calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped drilling! The junk man took millions of dollars in the vein, because he knew enough to seek expert’s advice before giving up.

Most of the money which went into the machinery was borrowed through the efforts of Darby, who was then a very young man. The money came from his relatives because of their faith in him. He paid back every dollar of it, although he was years in doing so.

Long afterward, Mr. Darby made another discovery that desire can be changed into gold. This discovery came after he went into the business of selling life insurance. Remembering that he lost a huge fortune, for he stopped three feet from gold, Darby profited by the experience in his chosen work, saying to himself, “I stopped three feet from gold, but I will never stop because men say ‘no’ when I ask them to buy insurance.”

Darby sold more than a million dollars in life insurance annually. He owes his “stickability” to the lesson he learned from his “quitability” in the gold mining business.
