二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Is running a marathon (马拉松) under two hours possible? Will a human ever be able to run that fast? Now, the world record for the 42.195km (26.219 miles) distance is held by the Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge. His time of 2:01:39 hours was achieved at the Berlin Marathon of 2018.

But studies published in the past have come to the conclusion that running a marathon under 2 hours can be done. They even see a time of around 1:57 as the fastest a human can ever run. However, we may have to wait longer for this to happen.

To achieve an under two-hour marathon, an athlete would have to have the perfect body size and weight, the right running plans and of course, the right nutrition (营养). Today’s perfect runners come from Kenya and Ethiopia, countries that have dominated (占优势) long distance races for years. East African athletes have long legs and lungs that can take in lots of oxygen (氧). Training at high altitudes (海拔) gives them a strong heart. Ideal weather conditions with cool temperatures and no wind will also be needed to attempt such a mark. An extremely fast marathon would only be possible on flat city courses, like Berlin or London.

Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, athletes have tried to run long distance races as fast as possible. In 1900, the marathon world record was at around 3 hours. In the following 30 years, men were able to reach a mark of 2:30. But in the last 15 years, the world record has improved by only 3 minutes.

On the other side, some experts think that such fast performances will only be possible with the help of some medicine.

【1】Why is the world record mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A.To show a human can run very fast.

B.To prove Eliud Kipchoge is the best.

C.To introduce the greatest success in the world.

D.To show an under two hour marathon hasn’t been achieved yet.

【2】Why is it difficult to see a time of around 1:57?

A.It requires too many things to fit together.

B.It isn’t easy to find right running plans.

C.Training a perfect runner takes a long time.

D.Kenyan and Ethiopian runners control marathons.

【3】Which of the following may be important for an under two-hour marathon?

    A.High altitudes.

    B.Lots of oxygen.

    C.A perfect environment.

    D.Tall and strong runners.

【4】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.Men will run faster and faster.

B.Men made the greatest progress in 1930.

C.Achieving shorter time became more difficult.

D.It’s impossible to break the marathon world record.

  • 22、   Is homeschooling good or bad? That is a question that many parents ask themselves. In my opinion, homeschooled kids can give reliable answers.

Kayla Murray, who lives in Greensboro North Carolina, started homeschooling almost eight years ago, after attending two local schools. “Homeschooling is school at home,” like the name says, but it’s not just that/ she says. “You're able to learn more and do more.”

Having experienced learning at both school and home, Kayla says that she prefers the latter. “With homeschooling, I can do schoolwork in my pajamas, and no one cares,” she says, “you also have more chances. Earlier this year, my family and I were able to take a short vacation and go to an air show. My siblings and I get to take the day off for our birthdays. This year, I spent that time reading and playing the piano and guitar.”

There are, however, drawbacks of being homeschooled, Kayla says, especially “the lack of people”. While she doesn't miss homework, al school, she did enjoy getting to see my friends every day.”

Matthew Dimmette, also from Greensboro, used to be a homeschooler. He now attends public high school. He says being homeschooled is quite different from going to public school. The differences depend on how you arc homeschooled and the things you do. “For me, it wasn't really different in terms of the classes but the school environment was a big change atter hearting at home. says Matthew.

Talking about his homeschooling experience, Matthew says the best part of it was being able to learn what he wanted to. Yet the main disadvantage was that he couldn't do many experiments in homeschooling unless taking classes at different places. “My interest in science has been growing quickly in recent years, so I chose to go to public school,” he says.

【1】What does Kayla like about learning at home?

A.She can spend her time more freely.

B.She can always stay with her siblings.

C.She can play the instruments she likes.

D.She can celebrate her birthday at home.

【2】What does the underlined word “drawbacks” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Concerns.

    B.Reasons.

    C.Changes.

    D.Problem.

【3】Why did Matthew choose to go to public school?

A.He wanted to make more friends.

B.He wanted to do experiments in labs.

C.He wanted to take all kinds of classes

D.He wanted to experience the school environment

【4】What in the authors attitude cowards homeschooling?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Uninterested.

    D.Unclear.

  • 23、   Those who are good at expressing gratitude often practice the following.

    Don't avoid the negative.

Expressing gratitude may generate more optimism. 1 Emmons, a gratitude researcher and psychology professor at the University of California, says that while we often associate gratitude with focusing on the good and avoiding the bad, the key to leading a thankful life is embracing setbacks as part of your overall journey. Emmons suggests recalling a hard time you once experienced. Chances are that you'll start to feel grateful for your current state and overcoming former challenges.

    Spend time with loved ones.

2 They make it a habit to spend time with those people who matter most. "Gratitude really helps us connect to other people," Emmons says. "It actually strengthens relationships and relationships are the strongest predictors of happiness and coping with stress."

    3

There's power in the small, ordinary moments, like catching the subway before the doors close or your pet greeting you happily when you get home. Look for a few things to add to your gratitude list.

    Volunteer.

Everyone needs a little help sometimes and grateful people know there's no other way to acknowledge this than by actively doing something about it. In his book, Thanks! Emmons wrote, ” 4” As research published in BMC Public Health points out, volunteering can result in lower feelings of depression and increased overall well-being.

    Love yourself.

Grateful people know that their thankful attitude can also fuel self-compassion. A study published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences found that higher levels of gratitude were associated with greater self-esteem. And it's no wonder: When your well-being is a priority, you can't help but feel great. Thankful for being the person that you are5

    A. Know the value of the little things.

    B. Since service to others helped them to find their own inner spirituality, they were grateful for the opportunity to serve.

    C. Help others appreciate the value of the little things.

    D. However, thankful people also don't shy away from the negative.

    E. That should be at the top of your gratitude list.

    F. Thankful people know they didn't get to where they are by themselves.

    G. Gratitude and fitness can go hand-in-hand.

  • 24、   We are always being told by the department of Health to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. But it’s not clear where the evidence for this comes from, and a large study by the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) two years ago of the dietary intake of more than 400,000 people found only a weak link between eating fruit and vegetables and a reduction in overall cancer risk. There is no evidence it reduces breast cancer.

Even so, how could anyone argue against eating more fruit and vegetables? Well, it depends on what fruit you are eating. A review article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal warns that a chemical in grapefruit can interact lethally with certain medicines. Even apple juice, the staple of many breakfast tables, may prevent our absorption of some drugs. Parents also often think fruit juice is a healthy alternative to fizzy drinks, but juices contain sugar and calories too — as much as a glass of Coke — so should be drunk in moderation.

Grapefruit has also been linked to an increase in breast cancer. A study in the British Journal of Cancer (BJC) of 500,000 women found that eating a quarter of the fruit a day increased the risk by 30%.

    The solution?

There is one good reason for not eating grapefruit — it tastes sour. But it is unlikely to increase your risk of getting breast cancer; further research by the BJC showed no increase in rates of breast cancer for women who tuck into grapefruit or drink juice.

Grapefruit contains a type of chemical called furanocoumarin, which prevents the breakdown of some prescription drugs. As a result concentration of these drugs rise, and can have serious side-effects, including kidney damage, heart blockage, and deep-vein thrombosis.

Patient information leaflets should tell you what foods to avoid with which drugs. If in doubt, ask your doctor. So you don’t need to eat less fruit, and many still need to eat more. Another paper from the EPIC study found a 225 reduction in deaths from heart attacks in people who ate eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day compared to those who ate three or fewer. The way the study was designed, however, means that it can only suggest a link — it can’t prove one.

1What can we infer from the passage?

    A.Everyone should eat more grapefruit.

    B.People should eat fruit selectively.

C.Parents should have their children drink more fruit juice.

D.Eating fruit and vegetables has been proven to reduce overall cancer risk.

2What docs the underlined word “lethally” probably mean?

    A.Closely. B.Wrongly. C.Dangerously. D.Quickly.

3What do we learn about grapefruit?

A.It increases the risk of heart blockage. B.It reduces deaths from heart attacks.

C.It reduces absorption of some drugs. D.It causes increases of breast cancer in women.

4Which of the following questions does the author mainly answer?

    A.What is grapefruit?

    B.Should people eat less fruit?

C.How can one reduce the risk of getting breast cancer?

D.What should patient information leaflets tell people?

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Long ago, there was a big apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow... He loved the tree and the tree also enjoyed playing with him.

As time went by, the little boy grew up and he no longer played around the tree.

One day, the boy came back to the tree, appearing sad. "Come and play with me,” the tree asked the boy gently.

"I am no longer a kid; I won’t play around trees anymore,” the boy replied, "I want toys. I need money to buy them."

"Sorry, but I don't have money. However, you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then, you will have money." The boy was so excited that he picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn't come back after that.

    The tree was upset.

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so joyful. "Come and play with me,” the tree said.

"I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?" "Sorry, I don't have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house." So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left with delight.

The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn't appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. "Come and play with me!” the tree requested.

"I am sad and becoming old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?" "Use my trunk to build the boat. You can sail and be happy." So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and did not show up for along time.
