二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Would a faster reading speed mean that we could learn more? Some people claim that it’s possible. In July last year, the six-time speed reading champion Anne Jones sat down to read Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman. Just 25 minutes and 31 seconds later, she finished it — which equals a reading rate of around 3,700 words per minute. Jones runs training courses teaching speed reading, recall and concentration techniques and there are numerous speed reading apps that have appeared on the market over the past few years. But do they actually work?

First, we need to understand how we read. The human eye movement system is central to our reading ability. Read over that sentence again, and think about how your eyes scan across the words. They don’t move smoothly over them. Instead, they make a series of short, sharp jumps, skipping over a few characters before briefly landing on a word. The movements are known as saccades (扫视) and the pauses are called fixations.

Reading isn’t just about seeing the words — you need to comprehend them to build up a picture about what the text means. People are able to get through a block of text faster, but at the cost of accuracy and understanding. In other words, if you use a speed reading app, then you’ll probably get the gist (主旨) of a piece of text, but you’ll struggle to recall details about what you’ve just read.

So, does speed reading work? Well, yes and no. It really depends on what you’re reading and why you need to read it. As yet, there isn’t a trick that enables you to read a piece of text both quickly and accurately — there’s always going to be a trade-off.

1What’s the main idea of the passage?

A.Speed reading is bad at times.

B.Speed reading is a waste of time.

    C.Speed reading can work sometimes.

    D.Speed reading is always enjoyable.

2What can we know from the passage?

A.Reading apps ensure we read much faster.

B.Fast reading makes us learn more knowledge.

C.Reading is no more than seeing the text words.

D.Reading ability is related to the eye movement system.

3What does the underlined word “trade-off” most probably mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Balance. B.Change. C.Business. D.Bargain.

4What might the writer continue to talk about?

A.The advantages of faster or slower reading.

B.The reasons why to do faster or slower reading.

C.The cases where to do faster and slower reading.

D.The methods for making use of faster or slower reading.

  • 22、One morning Fan Xing discovered that her classroom had changed. The 13-year-old saw that the desks were no longer in rows, but pushed together to make six bigger desks.

The new arrangement was part of a reform at Fan’s school,Changsha Daotian Middle School in Hunan.About five weeks ago, more than 2,000 junior students at the school began studying in this way, with six to eight students sitting in groups.

“This reform is designed to provide students with easier ways to study and more chances for discussion,” said Liu Xu,a school head teacher.“Our school hopes it can improve students’ abilities for self-study as well as teamwork.”

The new arrangement took some time for students to get used to.“I was too curious about it for the first two days,” said Fan.But soon she and her classmates got used to it.“Now our class is quieter because we can stop loud students with some simple gestures,” said Fan.“What’s more,we can express our own ideas and learn others’ through discussion. It’s a better way to study.”

Feng Yu likes this new classroom arrangement very much and has made some progress in studying. The 14-year-old said,“Group members first discuss, and then explain the solutions or answers to difficult questions in front of the whole class.”

“The discussion gives us more confidence to make speeches,” said Feng.“We can also improve our friendships.”

The reform has asked for more from teachers. They have no more than 15 minutes to teach in class.“It is a big challenge to teach in such a short time the lessons which should be taught in 45 minutes,” English teacher Wang Jing said.“We have to improve methods to teach better. We must prepare some interesting topics and exercises before class so that students can discuss them.”

Wang said that some students always talk. The teachers have to move continuously in the classroom to keep them quiet and get them to concentrate on class.“It demands more, but I believe it will pay off,” Wang added.

  • 23、I was about to cross the road when a stinky (臭的) and rotten smell smacked me in the face. That's how I knew I was getting close to Dai's House of Stinky Tofu, one of the city's most popular restaurants.

For nearly 30 years, Wu Hsu Pi-ying, now in her 70s, has been running the family business at Dai's, using a secret fermentation (发酵) process that had been passed down by her parents to create 10 unique varieties of stinky tofu. The beloved street food gives off a smell that calls to mind sour milk and rotting garbage. Love it or not, these spiced and sliced fermented tofu have come to symbolize the city's street food.

Inside the restaurant, framed calligraphy signs in Mandarin characters highlighted stinky tofu's health benefits. On the wall, images of menu items showed the eatery's stinky star served deep-fried, steamed or in a spicy soup.

I couldn't help but think about American TV host Andrew Zimmern, who travels around the globe to taste the world's strangest dishes. After stopping at Dai's, Zimmern spat the food into his napkin, saying. "I can't do it... that is absolutely horrifying."

Stinky tofu is said to be an accidental invention from hundreds of years ago. A tofu merchant opened his container of unsold goods, only to discover that they had started to ferment. At some point, he built up the courage to bite into the greenish mixture and realized it was quite tasty. He quickly started selling the fermented food.

I settled on the spicy stinky tofu soup, made with mushrooms, peppercorns and chillies, and slowly lifted a spoonful of the broth (肉汤) towards my mouth. It turned out that the dish tasted much better than it smelled. The tofu actually helped bring out the freshness of the mushrooms and chilli, and the broth was surprisingly light, given the tofu's rich thickness.

In fact. I liked it so much that I then ordered the cold and raw stinky slabs. As with the stinky tofu soup, if you can stomach the smell enough to taste it, the raw tofu was actually quite pleasant.

I thanked Wu and walked out of Dai's. Back into the clean air of the night, I lifted my hand to my nose to smell the city's stinky snack once more.

  • 24、The decision to go to college still makes sense for most, but a recent survey showed that only 16% Americans think a four-year college degree course prepares students well for a high-paying job in the modern economy. To some extent, technology seems to be complicating the picture.

A paper published by several Canadian economists questions optimistic assumptions about demand for non-routine work and shows that since 2000 the share of employment accounted for by high-skilled jobs in America has been falling. This analysis supports the view that technology has come as a blow to employment. Skilled and unskilled workers alike are in trouble. Those with a better education are still more likely to find work, but there is now a fair chance that it will be unenjoyable. Those who never made it to college face being squeezed out of the workforce altogether. This is the argument of the techno-pessimists(科技悲观者), who calculated that 47% of existing jobs in America are very likely to be influenced by automation.

There is another, less pessimistic possibility. James Bessen, an economist at Boston University, has worked out the effects of automation on specific professions and finds that since 1980 employment has been growing faster in occupations that use computers than in those that do not. Progressive automation can actually increase demand by reducing costs. But even though technology may not destroy jobs on the whole, it does force change upon many people.

In many occupations it has become essential to acquire new skills as established ones become out-of-date. Burning Glass Technologies, a Boston-based startup that analyses labor markets by obtaining data from online job advertisements, finds that the biggest demand is for new combinations of skills-what its boss, Matt Sigelman, calls “hybrid jobs". The composition of new jobs is also changing rapidly.

A college degree at the start of a working career does not answer the need for the continuous acquisition of new skills, especially as career spans(持续时间) are lengthening. Vocational training(职业培训) is good at giving people job-specific skills, but those, too, will need to be updated over and over again during a career lasting decades. Vocational training has a role, but training someone early to do one thing all their lives is not the answer to lifelong learning.

Add all of this up, and it becomes clear that times have got tougher for workers of all kinds. A college degree is still a necessity for many jobs, but employers often do not trust it enough to hire workers just on the strength of that. In many occupations workers on company payrolls face the prospect that their existing skills will become outdated.

【1】What can we learn from the paper conducted by the Canadian economists?

A.Employment has been shaken by technology.

B.College degree is a necessity in career success.

C.Skilled workers are no longer required in most American industries.

D.Techno-pessimism paves the way for future technology development.

【2】What does James Bessen believe according to the text?

A.Increased demand can bring about cost reduction.

B.Progressive automation is beneficial to companies.

C.Computer has always been an essential factor in employment.

D.Technology advancement has a positive impact on most people.

【3】Which of the following may Burning Glass Technologies agree with?

A.The job market will have a bright future.

B.The composition of new jobs is shaped by technology.

C.Online job advertisements require a precise data analysis.

D.Acquisition of new skills is essential in current job market.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Lifelong Learning: an Economic Priority

B.Technology Revolution: the Way to Success

C.College Degree: a Guarantee for Career Change

D.Vocational Training: a Blessing for Job Seekers
