21、 Volunteering is one of the major wealth of any American city or town. People get together to help others less fortunate than themselves, or victims of a natural or man-made disaster. Since the start of our country, this has been one of the noticeable features of our society.
Beginning in the Colonial Period and continuing down to today, our country’s history is full of examples of people helping each other. Requiring high school students to take part in voluntary community service projects introduces them to this important part of our society. And while many students complain about this program at first, a large number of them find great individual satisfaction when they look back at the things they achieved.
Our son, who graduated in 2005, found that he enjoyed the time he spent with primary school students helping them with their reading. In some ways, he became a hero to the young boys and girls he was spending time with, simply because he was a high school student and took the time to get to know them. By the end of his first year in the program he was looking forward to the next school year and a new group of kids. It was particularly satisfying when a child he had helped saw him some place in the community and remembered him.
Having high school students take part in required community service activities helps give them an important sense of belonging to the adult world. It also gives them first-hand experience in activities and situations they might not otherwise experience. And it shows them that they can make a valuable contribution towards the society with just a little effort and a few hours of their time.

22、 Have you ever wanted to become an engineer? The new IMAX film Dream Big shows how engineering can improve people's lives. It teaches viewers how engineers use STEM skills to help the world. Since 2017 Engineers Week was from February 20 to 26, the film hit IMAX theaters nationwide on February19.
Dream Big was directed by Greg MacGillivray. He has 38 films under his belt, including some of the most successful films ever shown in IMAX theaters. MacGillivray was the first documentary filmmaker to reach $1 billion in worldwide sales.
But how did MacGillivray get into the moviemaking business in the first place? "I grew up at the beach. As time went on, I saw the changes in the ocean, in relationship to pollution and overfishing. So I started making films about conservation of nature." he told TFK. Now, his films cover a variety of topics, from the natural world to human innovation (革新).
One of the engineers in Dream Big is Angelica Hemandez. In high school, she was on a team that beat MIT, a university, in an underwater robotics competition. Now, Hernandez is working to make energy use efficient. When asked what character an engineer should possess, she said, "The creative spirit is a must." She also said, "Engineering is such a good job — you make good money, you get to travel around the world, you get to solve amazing problems and help people."
The mission of Dream Big is to show people the good that engineers can do in the world. "That was the impulse of making this movie," MacGillivray explains. "We want to explain engineering in a way that will get the kids very excited about it."
"No matter who you are, or where you are, you can become a successful engineer," he adds, "All you need to do is to learn from the spirit of Angelica Hernandes."

23、People who frequently eat fruit are more likely to report greater positive mental wellbeing and are less likely to report symptoms of depression than those who do not, according to new research from the College of Health and Life Sciences, Aston University. The team also found that people who eat savoury (咸味的) snacks such as crisps (薯片), which are low in nutrients, are more likely to report greater levels of anxiety.
Published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the study surveyed 428 adults from across the UK and looked at the relationship between their consumption of fruit, vegetables, sweet and savoury snacks, and their psychological health. The research found that both nutrient-rich fruit and nutrient-poor savoury snacks appeared to be linked to psychological health. They also found that there was no direct association between eating vegetables and psychological health. Based on the survey, the more often people ate fruit, the lower they scored for depression and the higher for mental wellbeing, independent of the overall quantity of fruit intake. By contrast, there was no link between these everyday memory lapses (差错) and fruit and vegetables intake or sweet snacks, suggesting a unique relationship between these nutrient-poor savoury snacks, everyday mental lapses, and psychological health.
Lead author, PhD student Nicola-Jayne Tuck commented, “Very little is known about how diet may affect mental health and wellbeing, and while we did not directly examine causality here, our findings could suggest that frequently snacking on nutrient-poor savoury foods may increase everyday mental lapses, which in turn reduces psychological health.”
“It is possible that changing what we snack on could be a really simple way to improve our mental wellbeing. Conversely, it is also possible that the forthcoming restriction of processed snacks at checkouts, due to come in this October, could not only improve the country’s physical health, but mental health too.”
“Overall, it’s definitely worth trying to get into the habit of reaching for the fruit bowl.”

Rowan's dad was a hardworking man who wanted to give his son the best life he could. It was why Rowan's mother, Julie Van Stone, said Joseph joined the Navy and went to MIT to get two masters degrees.
While at school in Boston, he would often write to Rowan. Even when he left school and was driving back to Colorado, he would send postcards from each state he stopped in. Those postcards were sent in 2007. "I remember him saying he had sent 5 or 6, and I only got 3 or 4 in the mail. But I never thought anything of it," Van Stone said.
Those postcards and pictures are priceless memories for Van Stone and her son, especially after Joseph passed away from a rare brain disease. Rowan never had a chance to say goodbye. But, on Saturday, just days before the two-year anniversary of Joseph's death, a postcard arrived in the mail. It arrived March 11, 2015. The message read: "Hello from Pennsylvania. I love you, and I miss you so much. See you soon. Love, Daddy."
Neither he nor his mother knows how it happened, and they may never know. But, they have their own ideas why. "I feel like that was the final goodbye that he didn't get to say," Van Stone said.
