Do you know what information a tiny place of your hair can give? The answer may include who your family is, which job you could be successful in, what illnesses you could get and so on.

All the information is carried in your DNA. Every cell (细胞) in your body has your unique (独一无二的) DNA. It can tell a lot about your family, health and personality (性格).

DNA was discovered by Friedrich Miescher in 1869, but for many years, nobody realized its importance. In 1953, two scientists at Cambridge University, finally discovered the structure (结构) of DNA. They were given a Nobel Prize in 1962.

Gradually, scientists learned to “read” more and more information in DNA. In 1986, for the first time DNA testing was used by the police. The testing can be a helpful tool for the police to solve the case (案件). In 1990, the Human Genome Project was started. Scientists wanted to make a map of human DNA. Over 1,000 scientists all over the world worked on the project, and it was finished 13 years later.

The more scientists know about human DNA, the more they can do to help people. For example, it’s possible that many illnesses will be treated in the future by changing DNA.

  • 26、Once upon a time, there was a lovely garden. There was a tall tree with many leaves and some vegetables in the garden. Both the vegetables and the tree made the garden beautiful. The garden’s owner was very proud of this. But the tree and the vegetables didn’t like each other. The vegetables hated the tree’s shadow. The tree thought the vegetables drank all the water.

One day, the vegetables decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would dry up. Then the tree answered back by refusing to shade the vegetables from the hot sun. Soon, the vegetables and the tree were all drying up.

The gardener then stopped watering them. When he did that, both the tree and vegetables really learned what thirst was. There seemed to be no solution, but one of the vegetables, a small courgette (小胡瓜), understood what was going on and decided to solve the problem. In spite of little water and the hot sunshine, the little courgette did all he could to grow up.

  • 27、Now, cities large and small often have remains of earlier historic streets and sidewalk pavements(人行道). Yet they often go unprotected even when they may be older than historic buildings that have enjoyed protection for tens of years.

There are many reasons to protect historic pavements — culture value, economics(经济) and public safety. Pavements played an important part in the modernization(现代化)of city environments in the 19th century.

Before the laying of pavement, streets of dirt caused many problems to people, especially in wet weather when they became muddy(泥泞的), which brought much trouble to people’s life.

To solve the problem, cities experimented with different kinds of materials to balance durability(耐用性), economic, sources of materials and noise considerations.

The earliest pavements in many cities were made of rounded stones. They were cheap and durable, but rough and noisy. Loose stone pavements were cheap and smooth, but not very durable. Wood also appeared in the 1850s as a popular choice — smooth, quiet and affordable, but not very durable.

In many cities and towns, brick(砖) streets are the only historic pavements that have survived. This fact covers up the truth of pavement experimentation between the 1850 s and 1920s, when a city could use up to a dozen different paving materials at the same time! Indeed, each city developed a unique “pavement identity” in the materials chosen and the way they were laid.

It is easy to think of the past when seeing historic pavements, as recalling “old world” city qualities. However, they are more similar to the early high buildings and parks-important city features that showed the modernization of the city. At a time when cities are becoming increasingly similar, such pavements also help define an important sense of place.

【1】What is the present situation of historic pavements?

A.Being highly valued as cultural buildings.

    B.Failing to represent modern environments.

C.Being brought back to its former glory(辉煌).

D.Failing to receive protection they should get.

【2】Why was the first pavement built in history?

A.To help develop the local economy.

B.To bring convenience to people’s life.

C.To develop a unique “pavement identity”.

D.To prevent earth from being washed away.

【3】What is mainly talked about in Paragraphs 4-6?

    A.Different experiments on city identity.

    B.Popularity of different paving materials.

C.Development of pavements of different materials.

D.Advantages and disadvantages of stone pavements.

【4】What’s the purpose of this passage?

    A.To protect the historic pavements.

B.To tell ways of building pavements.

C.To show the modernization of the city.

D.To introduce the history of the pavements.
