四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   A warm story has been taking place on one end of Islington Road.

Glenda and Raphael Savitz met with each other in 2011 in Boston. They fell in love and got married in the fall of 2013. In the summer of 2016, the couple moved to Auburndale, Florida. Three months later, their daughter Samantha was born..

However, within a week, the doctor told them that their newborn baby was deaf. It was a hard blow to the couple.  What should they do? They had no choice but to help her learn sign language. "We are going to learn it, too. It is important for her growth and development," the mother said.

But they didn't expect it when their neighbors all started to learn sign language. " We were excited that this new baby was coming," said Jill McNeil, one of the neighbors. "But it's frustrating (令人沮丧的)not to be able to say, " Oh, Samantha, I love your pretty pink pants. " To communicate with the cute girl, they had to know her language.  So these neighbors hired a tutor without letting Glenda and Raphael know.

Go. Like. Want. Eat. Play. Have. Make. These adult-students started with simple words. They then learnt to ask questions in sign language, such as " Who do you live with?" and " Where does your family live?"

Now the American Sign Language has become a second tongue in the neighborhood. These kind neighbors practice it with the girl almost every day.

Growing up in such a warm neighborhood, Samantha is now a happy and energetic(充满活力的)girl. She greets her neighbors every time she sees them. It's an amazing situation, since deaf children can be shy.

Samantha is a lucky girl. She has found real family among all those people next door.

1Which of the following words CANNOT describe the couple's feeling when they knew that their daughter was deaf?

    A.Sad. B.Hopeless. C.Worried. D.Happy.

2Which of the following is a sign language?

    A.A B.B C.C D.D

3What does the underlined word "hired" mean in the passage?

    A.派遣 B.聘用 C.命令 D.指导

4What can we learn from the passage?

A.The story took place in Boston.

B.None of Samantha's neighbors like her.

C.Samantha's neighbors learnt sign language secretly.

D.A teacher advised Samantha to learn sign language with her neighbors.

5The writer wants to tell us ______________________.

A.Samantha was very unlucky because she was born deaf

B.Samantha's parents expected people around her to learn deaf language

C.Samantha was a lucky girl because her neighbors tried to help her

D.Samantha was unhappy because she couldn't talk with her neighbors

  • 26、Tea, High Tea and Afternoon Tea

What are the differences among tea the drink, tea the meal, high tea and afternoon tea?

    Tea the drink

Tea the drink is made from the processing of making teas. The basic teas are also often mixed with other plants like vanilla, mint and melon.

    Tea the meal

Tea the meal on the other hand includes tea the drink as an important part, but mainly refers to social and family get-together. Generally speaking, the tea meal became popular in England first, but spread to English speaking countries, where tea meals are also held in many different forms.

    Afternoon tea

Afternoon tea(or Low tea)is a light meal eaten at 4:00 pm. It also comes from Britain, though most British people no longer eat such a meal nowadays.

Traditionally, loose tea would be put in a teapot with milk and sugar, together with various sandwiches(with cucumber, egg, tuna, ham, and smoked salmon), scones(with butter, cream and jam)and cakes. Usually, the tea and food would be put on a low table.

While afternoon tea used to be an everyday event, nowadays it is more likely to be served in a hotel, café, or tea shop, although many British people still have a cup of tea and a piece of cake or chocolate at teatime.

    High tea

High tea is an early evening meal, typically eaten between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm. It would take the place instead of both afternoon tea and the evening meal. The term comes from the meal being eaten at the “high”(main)table. It is now largely replaced by the later meal.

In recent years, “high tea” has become a word for exquisite(精致)afternoon tea. Actually, such usage is wrong. High tea is not the same as afternoon tea.

    Main evening meal

Tea is the main evening meal, even if people are not drinking tea. It is traditionally eaten at 5 o’clock in the evening, though often it is later, as late as 9 pm. So, in some farming areas of the UK, tea as a meal is equal to dinner in Standard English.

【1】The writer writes the passage to ________.

A.tell people how to drink tea correctly

B.let people know more about tea culture

C.introduce the new meaning of “high tea”

D.inform people the difference between tea and meal

【2】According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.Tea the meal is the same as tea the drink.

B.Afternoon tea is often served at a high table.

C.Tea is a word for meal in some areas in the UK.

D.High tea has nothing to do with afternoon tea at all.

【3】Which of the following pictures best shows the food and drink of afternoon tea?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【4】The passage is most probably taken from ________

    A.a science report

    B.a fashion magazine

    C.a newspaper website

    D.a travel guide book

  • 27、Ordering takeouts is very popular nowadays because it is convenient. More than 60 percent of the people in China order takeout food at least twice a week. If people don’t want to eat out, they can just order takeouts on the smartphone and wait for it to be delivered (送达). What about people living in ancient times? Did they eat takeouts?

In fact, there was takeout as far back as the Song Dynasty. According to history books, Emperor Xiaozong (1127—1194) liked to order takeouts late at night. His servants then went around the city to pick up the dishes and bring them back to the palace.

Ordinary (普通的) people also ordered takeouts. Restaurant waiters would go out into the streets and shout out which dishes could be ordered that day. After hearing the waiters, people could then place an order. Later, delivery workers would bring food to their homes. In the famous Song Dynasty painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival (《清明上河图》), a takeout worker can be seen on a delivery with food in hand.

People at that time even had a special meal box for takeout dishes. It was a long wooden box with several layers. People also used warming plates made of two layers of porcelain (瓷). Hot water could be put between them to keep dishes warm.

【1】According to the passage, takeout has a long history of about _________ years.

    C.1500

    D.2000
