  • 25、Many years ago, I learned a lesson in the back seat of a New York City taxi. Here’s what happened. I got on a taxi and set out for Grand Central Station. We were driving on the right side of the road, all of a sudden, a black car cut in right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on the brakes. The taxi slid(滑行)and missed that black car’s back end!

The driver of the black car, who almost caused a big accident, started shouting bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled, said nothing and wave at the guy. He was so friendly! I was surprised and asked. “Why did you just do that? This guy almost broke your car and sent us to the hospital!” Then my taxi driver taught me something, which I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”.

Many people are like “garbage trucks”. They are full of “garbage”—full of anger, full of sadness, and full of disappointment. As their “garbage” is full, they need to put them out. When they do so, do not take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You will be happy with what you have done.

Successful people do not let “garbage trucks” influence their lives. What about us? If we let more “garbage trucks” pass us by, we will be happier. Life is too short to wake up with regrets in the morning. So, love those people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who do not.

【1】In Paragraph 1, “slammed on the brakes” means “______”.

A.passed by the front car carefully

    B.drove the car slowly

    C.stopped the car suddenly

    D.sped up the car quickly

【2】How did the driver of the black do when he almost caused a big accident? ______

A.He just smiled and waved at the taxi driver.

B.He started shouting bad words at us.

C.He was surprised and asked a question.

D.He let the driver go when he almost caused the car accident.

【3】Which of the following is true about the taxi driver? ______

A.He acted friendly to the other driver.

    B.He caused a big accident.

C.He was sent to the hospital.

D.He shouted at the other drivers.

【4】What does “garbage trucks” in this passage refer to ______?

    A.People collecting garbage

    B.People with bad feelings

    C.The trucks carrying kitchen garbage

D.The trucks working at the field

【5】The purpose of the passage is ______.

A.to teach people how to drive in the city

B.to tell people how to avoid car accidents

C.To warn people of traffic rules in New York

D.to advise people on dealing with bad feeling from others
