    The Most Useful Invention

The Invention Blog: A place to Share Opinions Today’s question is:

What do you think is the most useful invention of all time?

Posted by Lingling on Saturday, December 4th

There are many — the train, the car, and the airplane are useful machines, but these are not my choices. For an everyday useful invention, I choose the air conditioner. I live in Foshan, and the temperature can be 35℃ or more during the summer. It’s so hot! I’m not joking when I say that without an air conditioner, people here can’t work or study. A lot of people might also get sick without cool air.

Posted by Tony on Sunday, December 5th

The most useful invention of all time is surely the Internet. We can now reach people and do business faster. My uncle Sam has a clothing store in Mexico City, and there is a lot of competition. He also has a website. Now people from all over the world can buy his clothing using his website. He can keep in touch with friends and family in Mexico and around the world using e-mails. It’s faster than usual mails, and it’s cheaper than using the phone!

Posted by Daming on Monday, December 6th

Tony, I also think that the Internet is useful. But, in my opinion, there is an “invention” that is even more important, and that’s electricity. Of course, this isn’t a man-made invention, but people like Benjamin Franklin and Alessandro Volta learned how to use it. Without electricity, many of the world’s most important inventions would not work.

【1】On the invention blog, you can ________.

    A.show your inventions

    B.learn about the famous inventors

    C.sell and buy useful inventions

    D.share opinions about inventions

【2】Lingling thinks the most useful invention is ________.

    A.electricity

    B.the phone

    C.the Internet

    D.the air conditioner

【3】Which is TRUE about the inventions they mention?

A.People use air conditioners all year round.

B.The Internet helps people keep in touch faster.

C.It’s cheaper to use phones than the Internet.

D.None of the inventions can work without electricity.

【4】From the passage, we know Tony’s uncle Sam ________.

A.has clothing stores all over the world

    B.is famous by selling clothes

C.uses the Internet to do business

    D.prefers to chat by phone

【5】Who may be interested in this website?

    A.Pet owners.

    B.Sports lovers.

    C.Movie makers.

    D.Technology fans.

  • 26、Almost all cultures celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of another in some way. Different cultures celebrate the beginning of a new year in different ways, and at different times on the calendar.

In Western countries, people usually celebrate New Year at midnight on December 31st-January 1st. People may go to parties, sometimes dressed in formal(正式的)clothes, and the may drink champagne(香槟)at midnight. During the first minutes of the new year, people cheer and wish each other happiness for the year ahead. But some cultures prefer to celebrate the new year by waking up early to watch the sun rise. In October, 2009, a wildlife rescue group found a 4-week-old dying squirrel and took her in and then placed her with Harrison and her family.

The Harrisons named the squirrel Bella. The little squirrel, with three other ones, all lived together outside of the Harrison’s home in an outdoor cage. They stayed in the Harrisons’ cage until spring.

In April, 2010, the Harrisons sent the squirrels back into the wild. The other squirrels soon got used to the wild life. But Bella didn’t. The squirrel wasn’t ready to leave her human family.

“Bella usually comes back and sits at the front door, waiting for someone to notice her.” Brantley says. Her husband John often brings Bella food, as she is usually waiting by the door for him. Bella has become a member of the family.

Although they have said their goodbyes, Bella seems to have other plans in mind. She refuses to leave the family and would not like to go very far into the wild. For nine years, she has continued to visit the Harrisons.
