  • 24、When I was a kid, the Easter (复活节) holidays in Australia were my favorite time of the year. As soon as they began in April, my family would head straight to the beach for a weekend of camping.

Unlike most of the world, Easter falls in autumn in Australia. This means that Easter is our last chance to enjoy the warm weather, swim in the ocean and sleep in the bush under the stars.

We’d pitch our tents(帐篷) on clear patches of grass and look out onto an almost empty beach. Often we were the only ones camping and the whole beach would be ours alone.

We used to spend all day outside swimming, hiking and fishing. On Easter morning, my parents would wake up early and plan an Easter egg hunt for my three brothers and me. They would hide the eggs in the strangest places in abandoned(废弃的) bird nests in the trees, under our tents and in every corner of the stones that surround(环绕着) the beach.

In Australia, instead of chocolate bunnies, we had chocolate bilbies (兔耳袋狸). Bilbies are Australian animals with long ears. Chocolate bilbies were the best treat to find and there was always one for each of us.

But sometimes, other animals found them first, and all we’d find were brightly colored wrappers(包装袋) with animal tooth marks.

After the hunt we would come back to the campsite with our bellies (肚子) full of chocolate. For us, Easter wasn’t about chocolate eggs or religious tradition. It was about being with our family in the great outdoors.

【1】The writer loved Easter because ___________.

【3The writer usually had _________ during Easter holidays.

    A. chocolate bunnies B. chocolate eggs

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. Holidays in Australia.

    B. Easter celebrations in Australia.

    D. Australian traditions.

Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. The story started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $12, 000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $6, 000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day interest (利息).

Then a kind old lady called Widow Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven’t got a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a violent (狂暴的) man especially when he drank a lot, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I was scared of him. I didn’t go to school like the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods.

My life changed after I lived with the widow (寡妇). She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me.

Widow Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going.

The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school, I saw some footprints outside the widow’s house. There was a cross on the heel (脚后跟) of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left head! Pap!

  • 27、Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.

Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoyments, like your hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them, you help your friend know you better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so you can understand the problem better.

No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

【1】 Some friendships don’t last very long because_______.

    A. they don’t know friendship is something serious

    B. there are too many people who want to make friends

    C. those who give others friendships receive friendships from others

    A. something countable

    B. the base of a friendship

    C. as important as money

    D. more important than anything else

【3】Which of the following is NOT true in the passage?

    A. Always tell your friend the truth.

    B. Sharing your mind with your friend is of great value.

    C. A friend who gives you his lunch money is a true friend.

    D. Discussing your problems with your friend often helps to solve the problem.

【4】 What does the word “them” refer to in the third paragraph?
