The "fog was in fact smog, a mixture of smoke and fog.  In other words, it was made by air pollution  In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, London's smog problem had become so bad that the-government decided to do something to clean the air.  A new law was made and nobody could bum coal in any British city. Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of' problem with air pollution that . London faced 40 0r 50 years ago.  However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people's houses  If these factories were closed, this would harm the economy(经济) and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel (燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.

  • 25、   Language students often think they have memory problems. They worry because they can’t remember words. In fact, the problem usually isn’t with their memory. The problem is with how they study.

To remember word better, you need to understand how memory works. There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. When you see, hear or read something. It goes first into short-term memory. But short-term memory lasts for only a few seconds. You will only remember something longer if it goes into long-term memory. Your long-term memory is like a very big library with many, many books. And like a library, it's organized. When you put away a book-or memory- you can’t just leave it anywhere. You have to choose a place where you can find it again.

How can you do this with vocabulary? The answer is to work with the word and think about the word in new ways. You can do this by writing new sentences that include it. Even better, you can invent a little story about the word, with people or places that you know. Another way is to make a picture in your mind with the word. For example, if the word is “height”, you can think of the tallest person you know and try to guess his or her height. All of these activities are good ways to think about words. They make the meaning of words stronger in your long-term memory. And they give a way to find a word when you need it.

1In the writer's opinion, students can't remember words because_____.

A.they have memory problems B.they are too worried

    C.they don’t use a proper way D.they don't like to study

2Which is TRUE about memory according to the passage?

    A.Short-term memory is seldom used

B.What we see goes into long-term memory first.

C.We will forget a word soon if it goes into short-term memory.

D.We will never forget a word if it goes into long-term memory.

3The underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refers to_____.

A.everything in life B.something you’ve seen, heard or read

    C.short-term memory D.long-term memory

4This passage mainly tells us about_____.

A.language students' problems in study B.how to make the meaning of words stronger

C.short-term and long-term memory D.how to improve ways to remember words

  • 26、Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reached the top of Qomolangma in 1953. It was an important event in the mountain climbing history. Also, it was a turning point in the lives of Sherpa people.

Before 1953, Sherpa people led a very simple and peaceful life. Most of them worked on farms. They had very little connection with people from other parts of the world. Now things have changed, and thanks to technology, the Sherpa world is much better connected.

Tourism (旅游业) is also a main force in changing the lives of Sherpas. After 1953, especially in the1970s, the number of tourists to Nepal increased greatly. Today, tourism is the biggest source of income (收入来源) for Sherpas. Many Sherpas now have a richer life.

Back in 1953, education and health care in Sherpa villages were poor. These days, however, there are many schools and medical clinics (诊所). Changes have also come to Sherpas’ dinner table: they eat healthier food than they used to. They can also get food from other places. Besides, they are able to get and use quality building materials. The new buildings are much safer than they used to be.

There are some Sherpas, however, who like the old way of living their lives. Some older Sherpas are upset that people seem to be moving away from the traditional way of life. They believe that some Sherpas these days think too much about money. As a result, they are losing the ability to pay attention to true happiness.
