26、 It warmed my heart today to walk into the Thirsty Camel downtown in the Thanksgiving Day, for a quick lunch before a haircut and library trip. Ilan, a food shop owner, said that he was refusing to take money today because it was Buy Nothing Day. To increase awareness(意识) of the stranger’s over-spending nature of our society, Ilan suggested a trade(交易)for food today. He simply asked that you offer something of equal personal value for the meal you received.
At first I was really uncomfortable, wondering if it would be fair(公平的) to exchange a yet to be determined “I Owe You” (IOU) for food? What could I give him of equal value? After all, his food is the best in the town!
We ended up writing our IOU’s with promises in a lot of ways if he needs it, such as a book, some paintings and the offer of work. I think the idea isn’t that the trade is “equal” so much as the importance of the kind of transaction. We put thought into our offer and we had an even greater understanding for the meals we ate.
We don’t buy a lot, especially at this upcoming time of year. We don’t give gifts at all in fact. The holiday time is spent enjoying each other’s company and doing things together with family and friends. This is what seems most sensible(明智的).
Ilan is a good person. We are all lucky to have someone like this in our community.

27、 Growing up in Venezuela, there was never really much cause to learn English.
For years I knew nothing past “hello,” until I started high school. For five years, I spent two hours a week immersed in understanding the verb “to be”, numbers, colors, and the difference between saying “good evening” and “good night”.
I thought two hours a week was enough time to invest in learning a foreign language. I would always get top marks, and my teachers would regularly praise me.
Even as an adult, I still thought I spoke the language, just by understanding English menus or translating common phrases.
Yep, that used to be me, walking like a queen among everyday Spanish speakers.
“Bring it on, life,” I said.
“I can handle whatever you’ve got; I’m a rock star.” But when I moved to Canada, life hit me so hard that it knocked me down. Years later, I am still recovering.
Living in a new land, with different people, new rules, new weather, a new culture and language, I was no longer a queen.
Did I speak English?
No, not at all.
So, I went back to school, thinking that it was a challenge I would conquer in record time. But the reality was different. English was more like a solid wall in my path.
Even after getting a job, it took all my courage to stop myself from hiding in the washroom during my lunch break, crying, completely overwhelmed (不知所措的) and scared.
Learning English, speaking, listening – it hurt me. Not the language. Not the unkind people, it hurt because I wasn’t good, despite my efforts.
Now, after almost seven years in Canada, I’ve decided not to apologize for my accent, grammar mistakes, or pronunciation. I’m going to chase my dreams and enjoy a beautiful, rich, and fascinating language without being ashamed.
Don’t get me wrong, my brain still screams “Give me a break!” from time to time, but that’s completely natural.
I know it’s going to take a while, but at least now I accept the person I am – not the perfect person I thought I was.

28、 The hippo is a very important animal to the health of African rivers and lakes. However, researchers warm that the population of hippos is becoming less.
The hippo is a large animal. Hippos spend nearly 16 hours a day in the water. They come ashore to feed at night, and they eat more than 200 kilograms of grass every time they eat.
Professor Douglas McCauley and his team have studied the waste of hippos. He says, “We have looked carefully at hippos and found that the most useful thing is their waste. They eat lots of grass on land and then take that all back to the lakes and rivers where they rest. They basically get rid of that in the form of waste. And it turns out to be a huge amount of matter full of energy and Nutrients.”
Every year, hippos provide over 60,000 kilograms of waste for African lakes and rivers. Some fish need the waste in their diets. And some of the nutrients in the waste are the building materials of some small plants in the water.
Although researchers learn more about the importance of hippos, there are fewer of them. The number of hippos has dropped a lot in Africa. Douglas says humans are mainly responsible for it due to illegal hunting And animals, including hippos, often lose to humans in competition for water. Douglas explains, “Both of them need water.” He says when we’re harming wildlife, we should realize that our future is closely inked with wildlife's.

29、 Next month, I'm traveling to a remote area of Central Africa and my aim is to know enough Lingala—one of the local languages—to have a conversation. I wasn't sure how I was going to manage this until I discovered a way to learn all the vocabulary I'm going to need. Thanks to Memrise, the app I'm using. It feels just like a game.
"People often stop learning things because they feel they're not making progress or because it all feels like too much hard work," says Ed Cooke one of the people who created Memrise. "Were trying to create a form of learning experience that is fun and is something you'd want to do instead of watching TV."
Memrise gives you a few new words to learn and these are "seeds" which you plant in your "greenhouse". When you practice the words, you "water your plants". When the app believes that you have really remembered a word, it moves the word to your "garden". And if you forget to log on, the app sends you emails that remind you to "water your plants".
The app uses two principles about learning. The first is that people remember things better when they link them to a picture in their mind. Memrise translates words into your own language, but it also encourages you to use "mems". For example, I memorized motele, the Lingala word for "engine", using a mem I created﹣I imagined an old engine in a motel room.
The second principle is that we need to stop after studying words and then repeat them again later, leaving time between study periods. Memrise helps you with this, because it's the kind of app you only use for five or ten minutes a day.
I've learnt hundreds of Lingala words with Memrise. I know this won't make me a fluent speaker, but I hope I'll be able to do more than just smile when I meet people in Congo. Now, I need to go and water my Vocabulary!
【1】What does Ed Cooke make an effort to do with Memrise?
A.Create memorable experiences. B.Make progress with hard work.
C.Master languages through games. D.Combine study with entertainment.
【2】What do the underlined words "water your plants" in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Learning new words. B.Being a Memrise user.
C.Logging on to the app. D.Taking care of your garden.
【3】How does Memrise work?
A.By providing learners with interesting pictures.
B.By helping learners lean from mistakes.
C.By offering learners human translation services.
D.By encouraging learners to link words to pictures in their mind.
【4】What is the author's attitude towards Memrise?
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Uncaring. D.Disapproving.

The young people are often considered the great multitaskers. However, an Oxford University research suggests this idea is open to question.
