27、In all the world’s cultures, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study. Experts find that because of the way our brains take in music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.
Music education has received a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada followed children’s IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes uses several areas of the brain, increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes is helpful in solving math problems.
Music is also used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memory. The secret lies in the way the brain takes in music. One area near the forehead(前额) connects music with memories stored in two other areas. That’s why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases of memory losses, listening to music can help unlock buried memories.
With music’s benefits, it’s no wonder some countries make music study a part of their education systems. People are recognizing that more than just a form of entertainment, music is also great for the brain.

28、 Pangolins are the most trafficked(非法交易)mammals in the world and are facing extinction. To draw attention to these scaly(有鳞片的), anteater-like animals, a new wildlife documentary, Eye of the Pangolin, is attempting a unique way to inspire action and conservation: access. Partnering with the non-profit organization Pangolin. Africa, the documentary was made available on YouTube in May 2019. The intention is to reach communities wherever the Internet is available, especially African communities, who live near the animal’s habitats.
Over two years, the documentary crew traveled to South Africa, Ghana, Central African Republic and Gabon in search of the four unique species of pangolin, which has never been achieved before. Filmmakers Bruce Young and Johan Vermeulen say that they went into the shoot knowing relatively little about pangolins, but grew to respect and appreciate the animals. Getting close to the creatures over two years was a crash course in these secretive creatures. Johan Vermeulen said, “One thing however that might seem unimportant is that they are actually quite fussy eaters. You would think they would eat any type of ant, but they all prefer a specific type ant.”
Pangolins are hunted illegally across Africa for their scales, which are used for traditional medicine, and their meat. In April 2019, Singaporean customs officials conducted two separate seizures of 24 tons of pangolin scales, which equals to the death of 69,000 pangolins.
Though the documentary focuses less on the trafficking of pangolins, and more on the animals in their natural habitat, the aim of the documentary is to inspire viewers around the world to call for action to end trafficking and protecting these unique creatures.

29、 A holiday is any day when people lay aside their ordinary duties and cares. The word came from Old English. At first, holidays honored some holy events or persons. People in Great Britain and other countries speak of holidays as Americans speak of vacations.
Every nation has its special holidays. China observes New Year’s Day(January 1), May Day and National Day as it was on Oct.1, 1949 that the People’s Republic of China was founded as legal(法定的) holidays. The Chinese have long celebrated the Chinese lunar year. In the United States, Congress has declared several days as legal holidays such as New Year’s Day(January 1), Martin Luther King, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and so on. Some holidays celebrate special events in the development of a country, such as Greece’s Independence Day and Italy’s Liberation Day.
In the United States, banks and school usually close on a legal holiday. When such a holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday is usually observed. 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Scientists have proved what students have long suspected: Maths equations can actually trigger physical pain.
Regions of the brain linked with the experience of physical 【1】 were activated in those fearful of maths when they were presented with a tough equation, researchers have found. The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more it 【2】 activity in regions of their brain associated with visceral (内脏的) threat detection, and often the experience of pain itself.
However, the researchers say their study examines the pain response associated with anticipating an anxiety-provoking event, rather than the pain associated with a 【3】 event itself. A maths task itself is not painful but 【4】 the thought of it is highly unpleasant to certain people.
“Maths can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMAs), math is associated with tension, apprehension (忧虑) and fear,” the researchers said in their paper titled. When Math Hurts. “【5】, this relation was not seen during math performance, 【6】 that it is not that math itself hurts, rather, the anticipation of math is painful. These results may also provide a potential neural mechanism to explain why (people with) HMAs tend to 【7】 math and math-related situations, which in turn can bias (使有偏见) (those with) high levels of mathematics-anxiety away from taking math classes or even entire math-related 【8】 paths. We provide the first neural 【9】 indicating the nature of the subjective experience of math-anxiety.
Other forms of psychological stress, such as social 【10】 or a traumatic break-up, can also elicit feeling of physical pain.”
