26、 Body language has always been a hot topic of interesting dinner conversations and now today it is still a hot topic. It is perhaps one of the most powerful forms of human expression or human communication!
Body language is a very important part of communication which can constitute 50% or more of what we are communicating to the other person. If you wish to communicate effectively, then it makes sense to understand how you can (and cannot) use your body to say what you mean.
Body language can be used to discover all sorts of things ,such as knowing when someone is attracted to you, finding truth and lies, showing confidence, winning respect in any situation, and you can use body language to put people at ease, make friends quickly, persuade, and influence.
So what is body language? Body language is a term used to describe the method of communication using body movements or gestures instead of sounds, verbal(口头的) language or other communication. Body language includes the most subtle(微妙的)movements that many people are not aware of, including winking(眨眼) and slight movement of the eyebrows and other facial expressions.
Body language is one of the easiest ways for you to tell what's really going on in a conversation with another person. The body language that you observe from other people will tell you whether or not those people are being straight up with you or whether there is more to the story that’s not being said. Watch, look, and observe. Sometimes you can tell more by a person’s body language than the words they speak.

27、 More than 100 scientists from 25 countries have traveled to faraway places to collect wild crop seeds(种子) in an effort to help battle climate change.
The scientists, who have been compared to the heroes of the “Indiana Jones” movies, traveled on foot, four-wheeled vehicles(交通工具), boats, horses and even elephants to reach faraway areas. They faced extreme heat, dust, and danger from wild animals. At last, they collected 4, 644 seeds of 371 wild relatives of 28 world crops, many of which are said to be endangered.
The Crop Trust, an organization that works to save different kinds of crops, is directing the project. The group is working in partnership with Britain's Royal Botanic Gardens and Millennium Seed Bank. Additional financial support comes from Norway. The project is believed to be the largest organized international effort yet to collect and protect crops' wild relatives.Hannes Dempewolf is a scientist and the head at the Crop Trust. He said“What these seed collectors went through in the field resembles scenes from an Indiana Jones movie.”
Some crops are threatened because of destruction of forests, climate change and expanded cities. The newly-found wild seeds have developed so plants can grow in extreme temperatures, poor soils, and even in low rainfall areas.
A United Nations report says that food production is at risk because of a shortage of rain and other weather extremes connected to climate change. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says that the number of plant species is quickly decreasing and people are depending on fewer species for food. Those wild seeds could be important in feeding a growing human population in some areas and offer a largely unused source of diversity(多样性) to crops.

28、 Jim was a young man in his early twenties who was studying to be a carpenter. He was a good worker, honest and worthy of trust, so his boss was pleased with him. As he was such a likable man and easy to deal with, he was popular with his workmates, too. They also made fun of him a great deal but he never got angry with them and would only laugh.
But Jim's one great shortcoming was that he could never tell a lie, no matter how hard he tried, not even a little one. In fact, he was so honest and shy that he would blush even when he was telling the truth. He used to stand in front of the mirror and practise lying while looking himself in the eyes at the same time. But as soon as he saw his face starting to go red he had to look away.
One morning, however, he didn't feel like going to work because he had been to a party the night before and it hadn't ended till the early hours of the morning. And so far the first time in his life he decided to take the day off. He rang his boss, pretending to be a woman. “I'm afraid Jim can't come to work today. He isn't feeling very well.”
Poor Jim was thankful that his boss couldn't see him just at that moment because his hands were trembling and his face was bright red.
“Thank you for letting me know,” said Mr. Woods, his boss, and then just as he was about to hang up, he said, “just a moment, madam, who's speaking?”

29、Be a good Listener
When communicating with others, we often focus (集中) on what we should say. 【1】 Try the following tips to become a good listener.
Pay full attention to the speaker. You can’t listen effectively (有效地) if you’re constantly checking your phone or thinking about something else. 【2】 If you find it hard to do so, try repeating their words over in your head—it’ll help you stay focused.
Show your interest in what’s being said. Nod and smile at the speaker from time to time. 【3】 These show that you are listening with interest.
【4】 Listen without judging the other person or the things she tells you. If what she says frightens you, go ahead and feel frightened, but don’t say to yourself, “Well, that was a stupid move.” As soon as you allow yourself to be judgmental, you’ve decreased your effectiveness as a listener.
Don’t be a sentence-grabber. When you are trying to speed up the conversation by finishing the other’s sentences, this usually lands you way off base. 【5】 So what you need is patience, not speed.
A. Keep an open mind.
B. Look at each other in the eye.
C. The only way to find out is by listening.
D. But successful communication is more about listening.
E. Encourage the speaker to continue with small expressions like “yes” or “uh huh”.
F. Stay focused on the moment-to-moment experience to pick up the important information.
G. You’re following your own train of thought and ignore where the speaker’s is headed.
