二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Remember Vitainwater’s “free of rolling screen for a year” challenge that dared people to be free from smart phones for a whole year will win $ 100,000? Well, Elana Mugdan, a New York woman, has been into it for eight months, and just four months away from claiming grand prize.

Vitaminwater made news headlines last December when it announced its unique challenge. Thousands of people applied to be chosen as the perfect candidate to spend a year without touching their smart phones, but in the end, the only person who got to try and survive for an entire year without a handheld smart phone was Elana Mugdan, a 29-year-old fiction writer from Queens, New York. Eight months into the challenge, she claims it has been a free and eye-opening experience that shows her just how dependent she becomes on her smart phone. Even though there are times when she misses her handheld smart phone, she plans to go on living without it even after the challenge ends, because she really doesn’t want to go back to days when she abused it, wasted time, stayed up all hours of the night on it, and was obsessed with social media.

But not having access to her smart phone really made certain situations a lot harder than she could have imagined them before. “Many people did me a favor. However, once, I almost got stranded (滞留) in the SeaTac airport because the phone number I’d written down was wrong, and I had no way of referring to the right one, no way of calling a cab, and no one in the state who could help me,” the young writer said.

Another time, her car’s “check engine” light turned on while she was driving in an unfamiliar area at night. She couldn’t use her phone’s GPS location feature, r even check what the light meant on Google or find a nearby car repair shop. Still, she learned to overcome these situations. And now she claims the last eight months of phone-free life have been one of the best adventures of her life and that she’ll keep it for another four months.

    B.accustomed to

    D.popular with

【3】What does Elana Mugdan mainly want to express in paragraph 3?

A.It’s fantastic to have someone to help her all the way.

B.It’s unimaginable to lose her phone number on the way.

C.It’s unnecessary to refer to information with a smart phone.

D.It’s difficult to get out of the trouble without a smart phone.

【4】What can we learn about Elana Mudgan?

    A.She couldn’t live without a smart phone.

B.She finds no one can help her in the adventure.

D.She used to use her smart phone to write fiction.

  • 27、

Working or learning in a foreign country can be a difficult experience, both professionally and personally, because of the culture shock.

The hardest part of working abroad isn't finding a place to stay or learning the language. It's learning to overcome the culture shock. The anthropologist(人类学家) Kalvero Oberg first put forward the term 'culture shock'. He reported that the culture shock was caused by the 'anxiety that results from losing all our familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse(社交) while living and working in another culture'.

These things are part of everyday life, and include many signs, gestures, facial expressions, and customs. When we enter a new culture, these cues(提示) are usually not present or so different that they're no longer understandable to us.

'When a person enters a foreign culture, ' wrote Oberg, 'all or most of these familiar cues are eliminated. He or she is like a fish out of water. No matter how broad-minded he or she may be, lots of props(支柱) have been knocked out from the environment.'

This is what happened to Lara, a young IT consultant(顾问) from America moved last year to their company in southern Europe. Three weeks after she arrived in Europe, Lara sent a desperate e-mail begging to return home. 'The people are so unfriendly, ' Lara wrote. 'They eat at strange hours and I'm starting to get allergic(过敏的) to the local food. I can't get anything done because their way of doing business is so disorganized and so inefficient and I have a terrible skin itch because of the water. I want to come home!'

What Lara and other IT consultants meet on their first assignment abroad is a culture shock. While you can't prevent the culture shock from happening, you can take some measures to cut down its effects.

1What is the most difficult part for a foreign student?

A.Learning the foreign language. B.Adapting to the local culture.

C.Finding a right place to live. D.Entering a famous school.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word “eliminated” in Paragraph 4?

    A.observed B.removed

    C.solved D.measured

3What happened to Lara when she arrived in Europe?

A.Her life got into a mess.

B.She worked more efficient than at home.

C.She couldn’t get on well with her colleagues.

D.She was out of condition because of the weather.

4Why does the author describe Lara’s experience?

A.To show us where we’ll meet with the culture shock.

B.To show us how to adapt to the culture shock.

C.To explain to us what the culture shock is.

D.To tell us how she manages to work well.

5What would be talked about in the paragraph that follows the last one?

A.Why Lara wants to come home.

B.Who will come across the culture shock.

C.What a person meets in a foreign culture.

D.How a person adapts to the culture shock.

  • 28、   At Mrs. Jennings’ handsome house, in London.

While waiting for dinner, Marianne Dashwood wrote a letter very quickly. Elinor Dashwood noticed a large “W” in the address. Marianne rang the bell to have someone post it immediately.

After dinner, there was a loud knock at the door. Marianne cried, “Oh, it’s Willoughby!” and seemed to throw herself into his arms when Colonel Brandon came in. She was so surprised that she immediately left the room.

Elinor made the tea for Colonel Brandon. He did not stay long.

The next morning, upon arriving at home after shopping, Marianne flew upstairs.

“No letter has been left here for me since we went out. How strange!” she said, in a low and disappointed voice.

About a week later, they saw Mr. Willoughby’s card on the table when they came in from morning’s drive. He had been there while the ladies were out.

“He will call again tomorrow,” said Elinor.

Marianne decided to stay behind the next morning, when the others went out. One look at her sister when they returned was enough to tell Elinor that Willoughby had not called.

Colonel Brandon came again to tea and had short private conversation with Elinor.

“Your sister’s engagement to Mr. Willoughby is very well known.”

“It cannot be well known,” returned Elinor, “for her own family does not know it.”

“I am sorry but I did not realize it was a secret. I came to ask, is everything decided? Is it possible to? Excuse me, Miss Dasnwood. I believe I have been wrong in saying so much.”

From these words Elinor was sure of something, yet she knew he could never be successful with her.

Over the next three or four days, Willoughby neither came nor wrote.

One evening at a party, Marianne suddenly saw Willoughby standing in deep conversation with a young woman, whose name was Grey, a rich lady.

“He is there! Oh! Why does he not look at me? Why can’t I speak to him?”

“Marianne,” said Elinor, “perhaps he hasn’t seen you yet.”

At last he came to them.

“Willoughby, what’s wrong? Did you not get my letters? Won’t you look at me?”

After a moment’s pause, he spoke. “I came by last Tuesday but unfortunately did not see you. My card was not lost, I hope.”

“Have you not received my notes?” cried Marianne. “Tell me, Willoughby; tell me, what’s the matter?”

Quiet and embarrassed, he said nothing more and turned quickly away to Miss Grey. Marianne, turning white and unable to stand, fell into her chair.

  • 29、   Everyone knows that walking is one of the best means of exercise for health, so physicians often recommend 150 minutes a week. But that’s a measure of volume (). What about the walking speed? Does that make a difference? A recent paper indicates the answer may be yes.

Previous research had only focused on total amounts of exercise in minutes or steps. A team of experts in Sydney looked at whether people who walked similar distances but at different speeds gained more or less health benefits

The researchers studied 11 English and Scottish population-wide reports that included more than 50,000 regular walkers with an average age of late 40s. The walkers were grouped according to four walking speeds: slow, average, brisk(轻快的) and fast. Lastly, the researchers figured out the death( from heart disease and cancer) rate during an average follow-up period of 9.2years.

New researchers showed marathoners had less arthritis(关节炎) than non-runners.

Participants who walked at an “average” speed, as opposed to ” slow ” , had a 20 percent lower risk of death. Those walking at a “ brisk ” or “ fast ” pace enjoyed an additional 4 percent lower death rate. While the best speeds vary with one’s own age and fitness, a pace below 20 minutes per mile is considered average, and below 18 minutes per mile is considered brisk. All the benefits came from lower heart-related deaths. Walking pace had no effect on cancer rates.

“Our paper is the first paper to keep apart walking pace from the physical activity volume ,”

Explained Emmanuel Stamatakis , a professor of the Charles Perkins Center. “We also took steps to role out ( 排除 ) the possibility that the slow walkers were in poor health to begin with.”

“Walking more is better than walking less. But don’t fall into the trap of thinking that any walk improve health. Keep out of the ‘ slow ’ zone. Make sure you’re putting some effort into your walk”, Stamatakis noted. “ An appropriate effort for those in a comfortable walking routine might be slightly out of breath.”

When you’re short of time, simply walk faster to increase the pay-off. “ A faster pace means you are challenging yourself to make adaptations for better health and fitness,” said Stamatakis.

1What’s the finding of the recent paper?

A.Slow walkers are in poor health at first.

    B.Walking speed influences one’s health.

C.Walking pace has some effect on cancer rates.

D.Walking 150 minutes a week is good for health.

2How were the walkers sorted in the research?

A.They were divided into groups by walking pace.

B.They were put into different age group.

C.They were groups by health condition.

    D.They were organized by nationality.

3What can we know about the research?

    A.Participants are from eleven countries.

B.Participants include people of all ages.

C.It collected data during an average of 9.2 years.

D.It focused on total amounts of exercise in minutes.

4What’s Stamatakis’s advice for those in a comfortable walking routine?

    A.Working more. B.Walking a little faster.

C.Trying other exercise. D.Changing the present lifestyle.

    Is Fast Fashion Taking Over?

The fashion industry has changed significantly in recent years. Traditionally, fashion retailers(零售商) created two clothing collections per year, called seasons. Nowadays, in contrast, they can design and manufacture(生产) clothes in as little as four weeks. Fast Fashion means that the latest designs shown at the fashion shows in Paris, London, New York, and Milan can be coped and sold in shopping malls within a month.

The advantages of rapidly changing fashions are clear. Shortening the life cycle of a product means that if a design doesn’t sell well within a week, it is taken out of the stores and replaced with a new one. This is good for manufacturers, as it means a greater volume of sales. It is also good for customers, who can keep up with fast-moving trends cheaply and who can enjoy finding something new every time they visit the store.

However, there are also a number of disadvantages to the fast-fashion approach. Perhaps the biggest concern is the impact of wasted clothes on the environment. The low cost of most fast fashion enables shoppers to buy several new sets of clothes each season. This means that huge amounts of clothing are thrown away. Furthermore, with fashions changing so quickly, cotton growers need to produce more cotton more cheaply, and that means using more pesticides and chemicals. A third problem is the theft of ideas. Fashion houses invest a lot of time and money in new designs, only to see these ideas stolen and copied by fast-fashion companies.

In short, these days it seems that the fashion industry is changing almost as fast as the fashion it produces. What do you think of this?
