二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、To be born in a duck’s nest, in a farmyard, is of no consequence to a bird, if it is hatched from a swan’s egg.

It was lovely summer weather in the country. Here sat a duck on her nest, watching for her young babies to hatch. After a hard time, one shell cracked, and then another, and from each egg came a living creature. But still one egg was not hatched yet. “I have no doubt it is a turkey’s egg as it is very big. Take my advice and leave it where it is,” said an old duck. But the mother duck insisted on sitting on it as a few days would be nothing after sitting so long already. Finally, the large egg broke, and a young one crept forth. It was very large and ugly.

Because of his look, this poor duckling, who had crept out of his shell last of all, was often bitten, pushed and made fun of, not only by the ducks, but by all the poultry. Even his mother, who once spoke highly of his good characters and excellent swimming skills, said she wished he had never been born, so the duckling left his families. And soon he found water on which it could swim and dive, but was avoided by all other animals, because of his ugly appearance.

Autumn came. One evening, there came a large flock of beautiful birds. The duckling had never seen any like them before. But he felt towards them and determined to fly to those royal birds. He spoke to himself it would be better killed by them than pecked by ducks or starved with hunger in the winter. Then he flew towards the beautiful swans. But what he saw in the clear stream below is his own image; no longer a dark, gray bird, ugly and disagreeable to look at, but a graceful and beautiful swan. He was so happy but not at all proud. Unfairly treated for his ugliness, now he heard others said he was the most beautiful of all the birds.

【1】Why did the old duck persuade the mother duck to leave the egg there?

    A.Because it was a turkey’s egg.

B.Because its shell has not cracked.

C.Because the old duck had the same experience.

D.Because the old duck thought it was not her duckling.

【2】What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3?

    A.What the duckling looks like.

B.How other animals treat the duckling.

C.What makes the duckling’s mother regret.

D.Why the duckling avoids all other animals.

【3】What does the writer probably intend to tell us?

    A.Be yourself and always hopes.

    B.Pride hurts but honesty benefits.

C.He that respects not is not respected.

    D.No gains without pains.

【4】Which of the following words can best describe the character of the duckling?

    A.gentle and considerate

    B.determined and conservative

    C.modest and brave

    D.stubborn and ambitious

  • 22、Is it possible to make machines think like humans? This is one question in research in the field of Artificial Intelligence, or “AI” To think like a human, it involves feelings, morality, hopes, and dreams. Humans are capable of making decisions by themselves without input from others, and they can learn from experience. In addition, humans are able to create things from their own inspiration for their own pleasure. The question is whether machines can ever really think in all these aspects. The idea of a computer that is all-powerful and can think and make decisions for itself terrifies many people. In some films, AI even decides that all humans must be killed. Many people are also concerned that AI will be used to replace humans.

Yet others are comforted by the thought of AI. Maybe with AI. robots can be made to replace loved ones who have died. Today, the creation of an all-powerful computer capable of human thought is still in progress. We have companion (陪伴) robots, and it is likely that they will grow more important in our lives as time goes by. However, the need for such robots does not seem to be as critical as our need for intelligent machines that can solve problems by learning from their observations and experience.

For example, AI is already being used with great success in Internet search engines and as a personal assistant in our smartphones. It learns from our habits to help us find what we want and like. AI is also used to diagnose (诊断) problems and suggest solutions. Researchers are also experimenting with the use of AI in driverless cars which can sense their surroundings and decide on the best way to reach a destination. It is also being used in education, particularly in online courses. Furthermore, industries that use robots for repetitive or dangerous work often turn to AI to manage these electronic workers. In addition, virtual assistants are also being used in some homes today. In the near future, it is likely that AI will be used to manage smart homes and handle an even greater variety of tasks such as setting out favourite clothes and helping us with our personal grooming (梳妆). The AI of today has already proven its superiority to humans in many areas. Do you think that we can create a robot that thinks like a human or one that is even more intelligent? If so, is there truly a difference between AI and a human?

【1】What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?

A.We already have all-powerful computers with the power of human thought.

B.One day the AI will decide on its own to wipe out humans.

C.Robots with AI have the potential to replace our loved ones.

D.In contrast, humans need artificial intelligence machines to help us solve problems rather than companion robots.

【2】What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A. AI will eventually be used to manage workers.

B.AI is often used to manage robots on production lines.

C.Industrial robots are completely different from electronic workers.

D.Industrial robots often turn to AI.

【3】What could be inferred from Paragraph 3 about AI?

    A.Smartphones already have AI technology.

    B. AI technology for driverless cars is already mature.

    C. AI has been being used to mange smart homes.

D.Artificial intelligence has proved its superiority over humanity in all fields.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards AI?

    A.Short-sighted.

    B.Wait-and-see.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Skeptical.

【5】What makes the best title for the passage?

    A. AI Thinks Like Humans

    B.AI Robots

    C.AI and Human Beings

    D.The Future of AI

  • 23、   A study published in the journal Science reveals that since 1970, bird populations in the United States and Canada have declined by 29 percent, or almost 3 billion birds. The results show tremendous losses across diverse groups of birds and habitats from iconic songsters such as meadowlarks to long-distance migrants such as swallows.

“These data are consistent with what we’re seeing elsewhere,” said co-author Peter Marra, former head of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. It’s urgent to address ongoing threats, both because the domino effects (多米诺效应) can lead to the decay of ecosystems that humans depend on for our own health and livelihoods and because people all over the world cherish birds in their own right. Can you imagine a world without birdsong?”

Evidence for the declines emerged from detection of migratory birds in the air from 143 NEXRAD weather radar stations across the continent in a period spanning over 10 years, as well as from nearly 50 years of data collected through multiple monitoring efforts on the ground. Citizen-science participants also contributed a lot, for the analysis included citizen-science data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey coordinated by the Canadian Wildlife Service—the main sources of long-term, large-scale population data for North American birds.

The study noted that the largest factor driving these declines is likely the widespread loss and degradation of habitat, especially due to agricultural intensification and urbanization. Other studies have documented death from predation (捕食) by domestic cats; collisions with glass, buildings, and other structures; and pervasive (普遍的) use of pesticides associated with widespread declines in insects, an essential food source for birds. Climate change is expected to compound these challenges by altering habitats and threatening plant communities that birds need to survive.

“It’s a wake-up call that we’ve lost more than a quarter of our birds in the U.S. and Canada,” said co-author Adam Smith from Environment and Climate Change Canada. But the crisis reaches far beyond our individual borders. Many of the birds that breed in Canadian backyards migrate through or spend the winter in the U.S. and places farther south — from Mexico and the Caribbean to Central and South America. What our birds need now is an historic, hemispheric effort that unites people and organizations with one common goal: bringing our birds back.”

1The underlined word “decay” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________

    A.improvement B.worsening

    C.changed D.threat

2What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    A.New findings of the research.

    B.Applications of the research.

    C.Data sources of the research.

    D.Methods of the research.

3What Adam Smith said mainly implies that ________.

A.bird populations in America and Canada dropped by a quarter

B.the bird population crisis is not just within individual borders

C.there is little individuals can do to help increase bird populations

D.the solution to solving the crisis needs international cooperation

  • 24、Obsessed with Kim Kardashian? Can’t get enough of Bennifer getting back together? Chances are you’re an idiot——at least according to Hungarian researchers.

New research has suggested people obsessed with Hollywood gossip and A-list celebs might not be that smart―which will surely be a jarring revelation for those who love tabloids(八卦小报)magazines.

The study, published in BMC Psychology late last year, claims that “there is a direct association between celebrity worship and poorer performance on cognitive tests” measuring both literacy and numeracy(计算能力).

The study asked 1,763 Hungarian adults to undertake a 30-word vocabulary test and a math test, before completing a “Celebrity Attitude Scale” questionnaire to determine their levels of interest in famous people.

Researchers found that high scores on the Celebrity Attitude Scale correlated with lower performance on the two cognitive ability tests. Participants were also asked about their income, material wealth and levels of education in order to gain the most detailed picture possible.

However, the researchers were unable to determine whether celebrity obsessives perform poorly on cognitive tests because they used their brainpower thinking about A-listers, or whether they were obsessed with Hollywood gossip because they were already less intelligent to begin with.

In other words, it’s unclear whether celebrity worshiping is a cause or consequence of low cognitive function.

“Future studies should seek further support for our suggestion that the cognitive effort invested in maintaining the absorption in a favorite celebrity may interfere with the person’s performance in tasks that require attention and other cognitive skills,” the researchers told PsyPost in a recent interview. “Although our research does not prove that developing a powerful obsession with one’s favorite celebrity causes one to score lower on cognitive tests, it suggests that it might be wise to carefully monitor feelings for them.”

While some tabloid magazine readers may feel personally attacked by this research, folks on Twitter did not seem shocked by the findings. “I don’t think a study was needed to determine this,” wrote one Twitter user. “What worries me is that people who worship celebs are not going to read this article ever,” another added.

【1】What do the underlined words “be a jarring revelation for” in the second paragraph mean?

    A.Come as a blow to.

    B.Serve as an eye-opener for.

    C.Have a negative effect on.

    D.Give a good laugh to.

【2】What can we learn about obsession with celebrities from the research?

A.It is a sign of lower intelligence.

B.It results in poor cognitive function.

C.It has to do with levels of education.

D.It is associated with lower cognitive ability.

【3】What do the researchers recommend people to do?

A.Invest more effort in attention-demanding tasks.

B.Avoid developing a powerful celebrity obsession.

C.Reduce the time spent reading tabloid magazines.

D.Seek further support to address celebrity worship.

【4】How do Twitter users feel about the research?

A.They feel personally attacked by it.

B.They are surprised at its findings.

C.They are skeptical about its result.

    D.They consider it not necessary.
