二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、How much free time do you need to be happier?Feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list can certainly make you unhappy, but new research suggests that more free time might not be the magic elixir(灵丹妙药) like many of us have dreamed.

Researchers found that people with more free time generally had higher levels of subjective well-being(幸福) -but only up to a point. People who had up to two hours of free time a day generally reported they felt better than those who had less time. But people who had five or more hours of free time a day generally said they felt worse. “While too little time is bad, having more time is not always better,” said Marissa Sharif, an assistant professor of marketing at The Wharton School. For example, some adults struggle with the “retirement blues”, which can be due to a lack of stimulation and structure, among other things. They conducted several smaller online experiments. In one they asked participants to imagine having 3.5 to 7 free hours per day. They were asked to imagine spending that time doing “productive” things(like exercising) or to imagine doing “unproductive” activities (like watching TV).

Study participants believed their well-being would suffer if they had a lot of free time during the day-but only if they used it unproductively. “In other words, how people use their free time matters,” Sharif said. “Of course, what feels ‘productive’ is up to you. Free-time activities like knitting, reading, cooking or gaming are also known to put people in a state of flow. In cases when people do find themselves with excessive(过多的)amounts of spare time, such as retirement or having left a job,” Sharif said, “our results suggest these individuals would benefit from spending their newfound time with purpose.”

【1】What is the finding of the new study?

A.Adults tend to feel happy in their free time.

B.Being too busy threatens people’s physical health.

C.More free time does not definitely mean more happiness.

D.More and more people have little spare time.

【2】Why does the author mention the example in Paragraph 2?

A.To emphasize the significance of spending free time.

B.To indicate the reasons for adults’ being upset.

C.To forecast the retirement life in the future.

D.To prove the discovery of the new research

【3】What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.The requirements of the experiment

    B.The significance of the experiment.

    C.The consequence of the experiment.

    D.The purpose of the experiment.

【4】What can we infer from Sharif’s words in the last paragraph?

A.Taking good advantage of free time will help bring people happiness.

B.Attending too many activities may damage people’s health.

C.Spending spare time with friends often benefits people a lot.

D.Having little free time may result in anxiety.

  • 22、I was surprised to learn the sleeping arrangements at the log home we were sharing with my in-laws (岳父母) for the week — specifically that my young daughter had agreed to sleep in a first-floor bedroom by herself.

As we settled in, we discussed the number of deer we had spotted on our way up to the log home.

“I hope we see a bear or two this week!” my wife shouted.

At bedtime, my wife and I climbed to the upstairs loft, and my in-laws headed for a bedroom on the first floor. We were about to doze off when our daughter appeared with a worried look on her face. She said a bear was scratching at her window. I decided it would be best if I slept downstairs and my daughter shared the loft with my wife. On my way down, I passed my father-in-law; asleep in front of the television. I was in bed only a couple of minutes when I heard a tap ... tap on the window. Something was indeed out there, but it wasn't a bear — at least that’s what I told myself.

Sometime later, I was awakened by a loud, low-pitched growl. I saw a large figure in the door and froze as it inched closer to me. I realized what it was —only after my father-in-law leaned in to give me a kiss. I blurted out in my deepest voice, “It’s David.” My father-in-law jumped back. We both laughed nervously at the awkward moment, and I explained his granddaughter's bedroom switch. I told him that the only thing scarier than a bear attack was Papa Bear coming in to kiss me good-night. He growled in agreement!

【1】Why was the author surprised in the beginning?

A.His in-laws were sharing the log home with them.

B.He spotted many deer on the way.

C.His daughter decided to sleep alone.

D.They would have surprise visitors at night

【2】Why did his father-in-law give him a kiss?

A.To scare him like a bear.

    B.To check on his daughter.

    C.To kiss him good night.

    D.To embarrass him.

【3】What do we know about the author from the last paragraph?

    A.Humorous

    B.Wise

    C.Tolerant

    D.Adventurous

  • 23、A 96-year-old woman, believed to be the oldest working nurse in the country, has retired from Tacoma. Washington, hospital.

Last week, Florence Rigney, better known to her friends as “SeeSee”, retired as a nurse MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital after over 70 years. Throughout her career — which began as student nurse, Rigney worked consistently, only taking a “break” from nursing to raise her two children.

Working as a nurse has kept Rigney very active. She's traveled across the country as an operatic nurse and even logged up to three miles on her treadmill from walking during her shifts. “I don't like to around — I've always got to have something to do. That's my nature,” Rigney said in a statement, adding that she always wanted to become a nurse. “I love to interact with patients and give them the help that I can.”

Rigney planned on retiring once at age 65, but after six months, she decided that she needed the job to stay active and keep her mind sharp. Now as she officially retired, the hospital noted that Rigney planned on spending most of her time enjoying family and friends. “Even working into her nineties she has never been one to slow down. Some of her colleagues joked that they had to sprint to keep up with her,” said Laureen Driscoll, president of the hospitals. “SeeSee's continued to be a dedicated nurse and an incredible resource to her colleagues and community. It's humbling to stop and think about the thousands and thousands of lives she's cured for. Everyone at MultiCare thanks Rigney for her unmatched dedication and service, and we're proud to honor her by supporting tomorrow's future nurses,” she continued.

As she said goodbye to her beloved job, Rigney offered some advice for other nurses. “Don't ever think that you know it all.” she noted in the release. “I kind of did that when I was in the operating room and you have to always be open. You never stop learning.”

In her honor, the hospital announced the creation of its SeeSee Rigney Nursing Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships for MultiCare employees for continued learning and development in nursing.

  • 24、Martin Stephen lost his cousin David Jeffrey and almost lost his own life when they were swept into a strong wave as a force 10 gale hit Dunbar two days before Christmas in 1970. The pair had been climbing rocks at the entrance to Dunbar harbour to watch the storm roll in, as they had done many times before.

A sudden wave pulled 11-year-old David into the water. Martin, who was 21, jumped in after Him to try to save him but the waves were just too strong. David was never found. Martin was left struggling against the swell. The lifeboat crew at Dunbar was deployed and after a dramatic rescue mission, Martin was pulled from the sea.

Five decades later, Martin wrote to the crew to thank them once more for their brave actions which allowed him to go on and live a full and happy life. And he had the opportunity to talk via videocall to Davie Kittrick—one of the men who helped him.

David was a young volunteer and he managed to pull Martin's head above the icy water as other crew members joined the rescue. Martin was eventually pulled aboard the Margaret lifeboat, where he was resuscitated. The men took it in turns to keep him alive until they could get him ashore.

David Brunton was the crew member who pulled Martin out of the water that day. He is no longer alive, and it is only now that his son Jamie has learned the full details of the rescue. Jamie said: “I remember my dad coming home in the late afternoon soaking wet. If it hadn't been for my mother who put the plaque up on the wall that he got for the rescue, we wouldn't have known anything about it. Dad wasn't keen to talk about it.”

David Brunton was awarded the RNLI Bronze Medal for Gallantry. Martin, a retired headteacher, said; "I have been given the most extraordinary Christmas present any human being can give. One life was tragically lost on that day, but David Brunton didn't just save one life—he saved nine lives. He saved my three sons and five grandchildren."

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was my first year teaching in a special needs classroom, and I wasn’t sure what to expect at our annual Special Track and Field Meeting. My students had a range of challenges, from mild learning disabilities to severe cerebral palsy(大脑性麻痹).

Of the poor ones, Mark was one disabled with the latter. Confined(受困于) to a wheelchair, he had to fight his spasms(痉挛) just to control his movements. But, despite the great difficulties, he always had a positive attitude and greeted everyone each morning with a huge smile.

His classmates loved him and always took the time to make sure he was included in group activities, especially Mike, Andy and Lucas, three boys who were excellent at sports. In his heart I knew Mark was dying to be just like them, unrestricted by the limitations of his body and watching the grace(优雅) with which they moved on the playing field seemed to fill him with wonder.

When track and field day came, Mike, Andy and Lucas placed well in their heats(预赛), and gave the normally quiet crowd something to cheer about. Mark sat on the sideline, cheering them on, although he himself placed last in his own heat because his wheelchair wouldn’t go fast enough.

The final event of the day was the 400-meter race. Everyone was invited to either walk or run, according to their ability, around the entire length of the track. We watched as the sprinters(短跑运动员) took off --- Mike, Andy and Lucas determined to prove who the best athlete was.

But when the exhausted three runners reached the finish line they paused and turned to look behind them. At the back of the crowd was Mark, determined not to be left behind. His classmates had passed him by and even the slowest walkers were outdistancing(把...远远地抛在后面) him. He was alone on the track with over half the distance left to cover.

    注意:

    1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
