  • 21、   Travelling can be a positive and life-changing experience. While it is possible for you to feel tired, it will turn you into a storyteller. 1, travelling can be a great combination of fun, adventure and relaxation. If you’re planning a vacation around, these steps can make your trip interesting!

First things first, it is important to know why you want to travel. Is it for some adventure, relaxation or to experience new things? 2, you will get your direction or the next step, namely, choosing where you want to go.

  • 22、As parents, we want our children to reach their full academic potential. We read to them, encourage their special talents, and support them when they have problems. If they choose to participate in music or sports, we also help them reach their potential in those areas. These are all good goals.

There is, however, an even more important goal. It is a goal more difficult than excellence in arithmetic or soccer or the violin. Parents are responsible for providing their children with a moral compass. They need to nurture and treasure goodness in their children. Every child has the capacity to become a good, decent human being. To fulfill this capacity, children need the guidance and support of parents and other adults. Raising good, moral children is the most important job we will have.

What is a good, decent human being? While we may differ on some details, most would agree that respect for others, kindness and caring, honesty and honor, and a reverence (尊重) for life are key. Good, decent human beings are people with a firm sense of direction and purpose—a moral compass—to guide their lives. Children need our help to develop these characteristics and values.

While most people try to act with honor and kindness, doing so consistently is difficult and requires lifelong effort. Goodness is not easy for an adult and it is even more difficult for a child. They do not have the knowledge, experiences, or cognitive skills to understand the impact and consequences of their actions.

Reinforcement is sometimes an efficient approach to building positive behavior. The child behaves in a desired way and the parents provide reinforcement. The behavior then typically increases in frequency. This approach works for teaching “Please” and “Thank you”. The new behavior is maintained, because it helps the child get along in the world.

Loving, everyday interactions are the beginning of raising moral children. The child who falls and receives adult concern learns how to treat others kindly when they stumble (绊倒). The child who makes a mistake and is encouraged to try again learns how to support others. When parents intercede (调解) graciously for their child, the child can see the basis for friendship. When we treat children with respect and care, we provide a positive model of how to behave. These early experiences establish patterns for their treatment of others.

【1】What are adults supposed to do to make children become good, decent human beings?

A.To encourage their children to learn more about sports or music.

B.To help their children to develop their special talents.

C.To support their children when they have problems.

D.To reinforce positive behavior through everyday interactions.

【2】Why is it difficult for a child to act with honor and kindness?

A.Because it is difficult for adults to do so.

B.Because a child is not mature enough to do so.

C.Because a child does not understand the abstract concept of “goodness”.

D.Because a child does not have a model to follow.

【3】The author talks about teaching “Please” and “Thank you” to demonstrate that ________.

A.saying “Please” and “Thank you” is a good habit

B.politeness is the nature of a moral compass

C.politeness helps the child get along in the world

D.reinforcement is an efficient approach to building positive behavior

【4】What is the purpose of the last paragraph?

A.To emphasize the importance of adults’ concern when a child falls.

B.To show how to guide children to develop friendship.

C.To explain why adults should treat children with respect and care.

D.To show how love and everyday interactions work in molding a moral child.

  • 23、The ancient Babylonians (巴比伦人)are thought to have been the first people to set New Year's resolutions. They made promises to gods that they would return any objects they had borrowed from others. If they did this, then it was said that gods would protect them in the year ahead. Since then, resolutions have changed from promises to gods to promises to ourselves and others. That could be starting a new hobby, trying to be healthier or learning a new language. Given the difficulties that any people have in keeping their New Years resolutions, though, should people wait a little longer before deciding what they'll be? Is January the right time to set New Years resolutions?

Yes — it gets the year off to a good start. They're called New Year's resolutions, not Half-Year resolutions. The whole point of setting New Year's resolutions is that it's done at the start of the year.Waiting longer just defeats the purpose of it. New Year's resolutions are a fun tradition to discuss with family and friends. You won't be able to talk about it in the same way if you're all setting them at different times. Besides, the more you put it off, the less likely it is that you'll ever decide on what your resolutions are going to be. You can always set new ones, or change your goals, but it's important to start off with something. By the time you've decided on some resolutions, you'll have less time to do them — which only increases your chances of failure.

No — January isn't the right time. January is a cold and dark month. Why would you want to start something new then? During the winter months, most people just want to stay nice and warm indoors, rather than try something new. People should make resolutions to lead happier, healthier lives whenever they want, not just on 1 January. Waiting longer means that you'll have more time to plan and will have a better idea of what you want to do in the year ahead. This will result in better resolutions, which have a stronger chance of success. One study found that by 6 January, one in five people had failed to stick to their resolutions. By not rushing into it, you're less likely to get discouraged and give up if you haven't succeeded right away.

Now that you've read a bit more about it, tell us what you think by voting in our poll at theweekjunior. co. uk/polls.

A.Babylonians returned to gods what they had borrowed from them.

C.Resolutions have been shifted into commitments to people rather than gods.

D.Setting New Year's resolutions in January is better than in any other months

    A.succeed easily

    B.end up with nothing

    C.doubt the fun tradition

    D.reach your ultimate aims

【3】What can a rush for making resolutions lead to?

    A.Happier, healthier lives

    B.More time to make plans

    C.Losing heart and quitting

    D.Failure to make decisions

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

    A.To call for donations

    D.To stimulate discussions

  • 24、Professor Heinz Wolff, who has died aged 89, was a bioengineering pioneer. He established the discipline, named it and, in a 60-year career, made significant contributions to medicalresearch. But to the British public, he was best known as the"dotty scientist' who fronted The Great Egg Race, a BBC show in which colour-coded teams were set engineering challenges(the first was to transport an egg in a vehicle powered by rubber bands). With his trademark bow tie, half-moon glasses and Mittel-European accent, he looked really like Professor Branestawn, as described by W. Heath Robinson. Yet while he cheerfully exploited his reputation as a "peculiar egghead'", he was very serious about his work and inspired thousands of young people to consider scientific careers.

Born in Berlin in 1928, Heinz Wolff was the son of Jewish parents. His mother died in 1938, and the next year the family fled. They arrived in Britain on the day war was declared."We really cut it rather fine," he said on Desert Island Discs in 1998.After leaving school, he worked as a technician at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford.where he invented a machine to count red blood cells, and then at the National Institute for Medical Research's pneumoconiosis research unit in Cardiff, where he designed a means of measuring dust levels in coal miners. He went on to study at University College London and graduated with a first in physics and physiology. Then, in 1983, he founded the Institute for Bioengineering at Brunel University. His particular interest was in technologies to improve the lives of older people, but he was also heavily involved in space research and worked as an adviser to the European Space Agency.

Wolff had made his first appearance on TV on Panorama in 1966,encouraging Richard Dimbleby to swallow a“radio pill'".On The Great Egg Race, which ran from 1979,his task was to get opponent teams representing organizations such as the chemical company ICI. Challenges included building a hovercraft from a lawnmower, and inventing a bicycle that could ride on water.Marks were awarded for entertainment value and technical accomplishment. The show ended in the mid-l980s,but Wolff continued to judge scientific competitions, on TV and elsewhere. A natural entertainer with an inexhaustible curiosity about the world, he said he'd be happy to dress up as a clown if it got children interested in science.
