  • 22、Children’s Laureate (儿童桂冠作家), Chris Riddell, along with eight former Children’s Laureates, has written an open letter to Justine Greening, the British Secretary of State for Education, demanding an investigation into school library service closures.

Why should parents or pupils be concerned whether or not school libraries close? Are they rooms that are of little use to today’s Internet-connected student population, who have access to a world of books and information through their digital devices? Quite simply, school libraries, as well as their librarians, are critical to our children’s future.

Research has proved this to be the case. The level of development of a school library is a highly accurate predictor of academic success, which means that parents should perhaps go so far as to compare the libraries of the schools when seeking the right schools for their children. Chris Riddell and his fellow former Laureates are absolutely right to emphasize the importance of librarians in introducing children to life-changing books and turning them into lifelong readers. Librarians play the crucial role of introducing pupils to different genres (文体) or authors, as well as encouraging children of varying abilities to read.

However, if libraries were to have a “job description”, cultivating a love of reading and promoting literacy (读写能力) is just one of their essential roles. The other role is, to help students find out and access, through reading and understanding, the answers to their questions themselves. That is, to be an independent learner.

Independent learning skills are very much in demand by pupils and parents, as well as universities and employers, because real education is about so much more than just academic success or grades on a piece of paper. As Mary Beard, Professor of Classics at the University of Cambridge, pointed out, “the simple truth is that we can’t teach all that we would like them to know.” The emphasis therefore must now be on teaching children how to learn for themselves.

Libraries and librarians should be central in helping pupils understand how to access data or knowledge for their studies or interests — regardless of whether this is from a book an online resource or a journal.

It is equally important that libraries guide students on how to “read” the information that is available to them — a vitally important skill given that the Internet contains a large amount of mistakes and misinformation. But, of course, libraries can only offer this support and guidance if they are properly valued, which means that we need as many voices as possible to be “shouting” about the importance of libraries in the education of our children.

1According to the passage, it has been confirmed that ________.

    A. libraries can reflect the academic success of schools

    B. libraries are almost useless to today’s Internet-connected students

    C. parents take libraries seriously when selecting schools for their children

    D. librarians are crucially important to students’ future development

2The author thinks that libraries should play a role in ________.

    A. turning students into lifelong readers

    B. developing students’ ability to read and write

    C. introducing students to different genres

    D. encouraging children of different abilities to read

3Why should independent learning be emphasized according to the passage?

    A. It helps students achieve high grades in their exams.

    B. Universities and parents don’t pay much attention to it at present.

    C. Real education is about learning independently rather than about academic success.

    D. Students can’t acquire enough knowledge through being taught by others.

4In the last paragraph, the author thinks that ________.

    A. libraries may be a source of false information

    B. Students’ ability to obtain information is vitally important

    C. libraries should teach students how to seek the available information

    D. students should learn to distinguish between true and false information

  • 23、When Millet was a boy he worked on his needy father's farm. At the rest hour in the fields the other workers would all take naps (打盹儿),but young Millet would spend time drawing. Finally the village where he lived gave him a little money to Paris to study art.

When Millet reached Paris, he had a tough time. Fortunately, when he was almost starving, someone bought one of his peasant paintings, which enabled his family to leave for Barbizon.

Millet's pictures of peasants at work were painted in a unique way. The painter would go out on the farms and watch them carefully, then he would come home and paint what he had seen. So astonishingly accurate was his memory that he could paint at home without models and get all the movements of his figures right. When he did need a figure to go by he would ask his wife to pose for him.

One of his noted artworks is called "The Sower", which shows a man seeding. He reaches into his bag for seed and then swings backward to scatter (撒播) the seed, and with each swing of his hand the sower strides (大步走) forward. In Millet's picture the sower has been working hard, but his swinging step and arm still move smoothly, like a machine. Only the man's head reveals his great tiredness.

Another masterpiece is called "The Gleaners". A gleaner is someone picking up the leftover in the field after the wheat harvest. When farmers near Barbizon are extremely badly-off, even the little the gleaners can find is a help. You can see from Millet's picture what back-breaking work gleaning must be.

【1】What do we know about Millet?

A.His wife supported him to be a painter.

B.He was keen on painting as a kid.

C.He spent his whole life in Barbizon.

D.He was brought up in Paris.

【2】How did he paint the laboring farmers?

    A.Asking models for help.

    B.Imagining figures in the field.

    C.Remembering what he had observed.

D.Recalling the days on his father's farm.

    【3】What do Millet's works convey?

    A.The farmers' hardships

    B.The scene of gardening

    C.His love for the village

    D.His anxiety about the farmers

【4】The text is most likely to be found in

    A.A short-story collection

    B.A personal diary

    C.A magazine of art

    D.A science magazine

  • 24、Anybody who’s noticed so many sweaty Sunday-morning photos on the Internet must think that marathons have recently regained popularity.According to Running USA,an organization that tracks the sport’s growth,52 percent of runners today track themselves with some sort of GPS-enabled device, like a smart phone or a fitness tracker. This statistic has likely played a role in running’s growing appeal--the easily available tracking information has attracted people to the sport, and kept them going, for it’s possible for anyone to see in real time how it’s affecting their bodias.

Today, free smart phone apps can give runners information on things like the number and length of their steps, their heart rate, even the estimated volume of oxygen they consume per minute. All this information can act as a reward and a motivator for the runner.“It’s one thing to hear encouragement from a coach.”Bryan Boyle, editor of Runner’s World magazine, explains.“It’s quite another, however,to appreciate-at a glance-progress made during weeks and months of running.’’

But run—tracking technology doesn’t just help runners train harder. It also gives them the power to train more intelligently.Recreational runners today no longer have to guess how far or how fast they’ve run,or what their body is doing. If they can monitor their heart rate, they can make sure they’re hitting the most strategic pace on each run, which can significantly increase their chances of having a positive experience on the course during race day.

No matter how much technology can promote the experience of running, though, many runners argue that the biggest benefit of the sport remains the chance to get outdoors, away from the computer, for an hour.“There’s so much more to experience,” adds Boyle.“fresh air, travel, shoot, just overall feeling better. There’s no app for that.”

【1】We can infer from the first paragraph that

A.people enjoy posting sports pictures on the Internet

B.Running USA plays a key role in the growth of running

C.tracking technology is drawing more people on the road

D.run—tracking devices help people run faster than before

【2】Which of the following questions are the second and third paragraphs intended to answer?

A.What information can run—tracking devices provide for the runners?

B.How is the run—tracking technology popularizing running?

C.In what way is run—tracking technology developed?

D.Why do people have to rely on wearable devices in modern society?

【3】As for the experienced runners, what attracts them most is

A.the exciting experience technology brings them

B.a chance to enjoy nature outdoors

    C.becoming popular on social media

D.being cool with a new wearable device on the road

  • 25、Dealing with Digital Shame

Some argue shame can be a forceful tool for change. But when it's weaponized against others in _________digital spaces, these same strategies can turn into hurtful behaviours, like cyberbullying and online harassment (骚扰).

Getting called out, insulted or bullied isn't exactly _________. But the Internet's ability to strengthen and permanently _________those messages is. And this tool is now in the hands of most young people. Here's how experts recommend guiding kids and teens through this digital landscape.

    1. Think before you post.

In the digital age, what we share can become _________. It's also a way of _________ourselves to others, says web safety expert Nancy Willard. _________, consider what your social media footprint says about you. "Write down the key words that you would like other people to use when they describe you," Willard says. "Then, when you're _________ something, [ask yourself], 'Does that reflect those qualities?'"

    2. Work through scenarios (可能场景) in advance.

If someone attacks you online, says Justin W. Patching, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Centre, you might feel the desire -- even the need to respond. Instead, parents should consider helping their kids _________such situations beforehand. "Given them a situation," he says, "to just practice those skills of _________or making a joke of it."

    3. Stop and stay calm.

It's easy for a delicate digital argument to make your blood boil. "If you're upset, realize that the threat __________centre of your brain has taken over," Willard says. "Unfortunately, when this happens, your emotional __________and your thinking centres go offline." But there are ways to remain cool. Take some deep breaths. Step away from the keyboard. Go for a walk outside.

    4. Put yourself in the other person' s shoes.

If you're being belittled online, it may say more about the other person than it does about you, says psychologist Sherry Turkle. "If you can keep that in mind," she says, "then the whole experience will seem less __________to you, emotionally."

    5. Empower yourself with tools.

If you find yourself being cyberbullied, often the tech itself can provide a number of simple ways to respond: Blocking the __________. Reporting hurtful exchanges. Taking screenshots. Saving message threads. Having that __________can help if the behaviours do escalate beyond one hurtful offense to repeated, long-standing harassment. It's a lot easier for authorities to get involved when they can see __________what's going on.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Frey grabbed his bat and glove, and raced out of the door towards the Jack’s. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the team in the following semester.

Jack was waiting outside for Frey. “What are you doing? Where's your stuff?” Frey asked, lifting his bat onto his shoulder. Jack shook his head, “I have to clean Mr. Willow's garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can't do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Willow’s. She thinks they’re kind of old and can’t afford to hire a cleaner.”

To get the work done earlier, Frey offered to help. The boys went down the block to the Willow’s and got started. They found a couple of brooms. Before they swept, they put boxes scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn't sealed, so he opened it. Out of his surprise, there were several one hundred dollar bills inside.

“You’ve got to see this.” He pulled out the bills and showed Frey, “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be several hundred dollars here.” Jack looked past Frey to the garage door and continued, “Nobody’s here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.” Before his voice died away, Jack had already drawn out one bill and stuffed it into his pocket.

Frey frowned and shook his head. “Are you crazy? That’s stealing.” Jack ignored him and protested, “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing. It's kind of payment for my hard work. And one hundred will do for a bat and glove in Igo’s Sports Store”. With this, Jack put the rest money back.

Frey was about to grab the money from Jack’s pocket when they heard a voice, “Hello, boys. Come in for a chocolate cake! Mrs. Willow made one for you.” Mr. Willow walked into the garage.
