21、 The Summer Food Service Program(SFSP)provides children in low-income areas with healthy meals and snacks for free.By this means children can get the nutrition necessary for learning, playing, and growing when they are out of school for summer vacation.
Sponsors
SFSP is run by local approved sponsors such as school districts, local government agencies, camps, or private non-profit organizations. These sponsors receive payments from the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA)through local agencies for the meals they serve and their documented operating costs.

At most sites, children get either one or two reimbursable(可补偿的)meals per day.For locations primarily aiming to serve migrant children, they may be permitted to serve as many as three meals a day to each child.
Eligibility(资格)
Children aged 18 and under can receive free meals and snacks through SFSP.For those over 18, they are also eligible if they are disabled and participate in special school programs for people with mental or physical disabilities.
Enrolled sites provide meals to children participating in an activity program at the sites where at least half of them qualify for free and reduced price meals.Camps are also welcomed to join SFSP.They receive payments only for the meals served to children who are eligible for free and reduced price meals.

22、Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours (绕行路) in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents' home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hates confinement (限制) and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb was born. He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise. I had two choices: leave Banner with my husband, or take him with me. My husband made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They'd get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshoppers in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car windows at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons.
We eventually arrived at my parents' doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.
I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique. On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of a journey-and the best part of yourself.

23、If we are to help students develop reading skills in a foreign language, it is important to understand what is involved in the reading process itself. If we have a clear idea of how “good readers” read, either in their own or a foreign language, this will enable us to decide whether particular reading techniques are likely to help learners or not.
In considering the reading process, it is important to distinguish between two quite separate activities: reading for meaning (or “silent reading”) and reading aloud. Reading for meaning is the activity we normally engage in when we read books, newspapers, road signs, etc.; it is what you are doing as you read this text. It involves looking at sentences and understanding the message they convey, in other words “making sense” of a written text. It doesn’t normally involve saying the words we read, not even silently inside our heads.
Reading aloud is a completely different activity; its purpose is not just to understand a text but to convey the information to someone else. It is not an activity we engage in very often outside the classroom; common examples are reading out parts of a newspaper article to a friend, or reading a notice to other people who can’t see it. Obviously, reading aloud involves looking at a text, understanding it and also saying it. Because our attention is divided between reading and speaking, it is a much more difficult activity than reading silently; we often stumble and make mistakes when reading aloud in our own language, and reading aloud in a foreign language is even more difficult.
When we read for meaning, we do not need to read every letter or every word, nor even every word in each sentence. This is because, if the text makes sense, we can guess much of what it says as we read it.
【1】The passage is mainly about ____________.
A. reading skills B. silent reading
C. reading processes D. reading aloud
【2】The underlined word “stumble” in Paragraph 3 means ____________.
A. step over something and fall
B. repeat something or pause for too long
C. walk with heavy movements
D. speak in a fluent and confident way
【3】 We can infer from the passage that the author will continue to ____________.
A. discuss in detail how to read aloud
B. introduce some more reading activities
C. tell how good readers read in their own language
D. explain why we needn’t say the words when reading for meaning
【4】We can conclude that ____________.
A. reading silently is easier than reading aloud
B. to understand a sentence, you have to read all the words in it
C. silent reading involves looking at a text and saying the words silently to yourself
D. there’s no difference between reading in one’s own language and in a foreign one
24、Earth is lighted up by bioluminescence(生物发光)but, for many of us,seeing the natural phenomenon is a rare treat:Catching the glow(光)of a firefly or witnessing a dolphin swimming through electric blue waters is a thrill.
Researchers are currently engineering glowing flowers and decorative plants that can cast a green light onto our living rooms. Observing plant’s health via its glow can be a way to instantly measure its health, and the side effect is anybody who wants a healthy glowing plant in their living room can have one.
A study published on Monday in Nature Biotechnology shows that this goal is well on its way to being a reality. The study authors announce they’ve created a method that causes plants to glow much brighter, and for a longer period of time, than previous efforts.Plants adapted by this method should be available for purchase within a few years.
The research was conducted through a teamwork between three scientific institutions and Plant,a biotech startup in Moscow. When this team examined a poisonous mushroom, they discovered that caffeic acid is responsible for its bioluminescence. In this new study, the team employed that information and inserted(嵌入)enzymes(酶) —which are specific to the mushroom —into the DNA of tobacco plants. In turn, the enzymes were able to interact with the caffeic acid in the tobacco plants, and cause them to glow both in the dark and in the daylight.
This method, the scientists claimed, made the plants 10 times brighter than previous efforts and the continuous light production didn’t harm the health of the plants. Interestingly, the light decreased as the leaves aged—but it also increased when the leaves were damaged. In turn, the team suggested this method could also help other researchers monitor plant responses to various pressures and changes in the environment. If a plant is short of water or a hungry sheep is harming a plant, bioluminescence could warn of this damage before it’s too late.
【1】How can people quickly identify a decorative flower’s health condition?
A.By monitoring its glow.
B.By making it greener.

A.They may take the place of lamps.
B.They will appear on the market.
C.They can light up a whole living room.
D.They glow less bright than previous efforts.
【3】What did the team do with the mushroom in the new study?
A.They inserted caffeic acid into it.
B.They made it give out brighter light.
C.They grew it on the tobacco plants farm.
D.They put its enzymes into the tobacco plants.
【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Warning of potential damage from glowing plants.
B.Increasing light when glowing plants receive damage.
C.Effects of continuous light production on the glowing plants.
D.Benefits of combining specific enzymes with caffeic acid in plants.

THE PET LAMB
Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last, nothing was left but the pet lamb, Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant’s felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.
While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door. “You see I am here for the lamb,” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this, one child ran to her mother's side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.
“That’s my lamb now, Charlie!” said the butcher’s boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy with a rope in his hand.
“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours!” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.
But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Pray tell your boy to stop a moment,” she said in husky (沙哑的) tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.
