二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The noble tree house—all natural materials, solid construction, away from the troubles of the world. In a more dangerous time in human history, their position above the ground would protect the dweller(居民)against environmental difficulties and possible predators(掠夺者).As modern construction has improved, these woody residences have become less of a practical dwelling and more of a children’s novelty. But now, these fun shelters are appealing to adults too and many are booking themselves in for a few nights among the treetops.

These tree house hotels can be found From Europe to Australia.Best of all, they come in a variety of interesting designs! From the traditional‘four walls and a roof’habitation, such as at TreeHouse Point,in Washington,North America,to the more artistic Nothofagus Hotel in Chilean Patagonia, whose twelve-sided walls make it look like a beehive. If that doesn’t appeal, how about a tree hut?

The Free Spirit Spheres resort on Vancouver Island in Canada allows guests to stay in one of three yellow spheres(球体),which hang from trees. The company was founded in 1998 by Tom Chudleigh, who hand built the huts from cedar wood and fiber glass. Not only are they as safe as houses, they’re popular!Mr Chudleigh tells the BBC.

Digs(借宿的地方)which are original seem to be a big draw.In Sweden,at the Treehotel numbers have also risen.“Today we have seven rooms and nearly 5,000 guests,”Kent Lindvall explains. Each of the houses there was designed to make use of the light and surroundings.

And how about an office?Microsoft, hoping to give its employees thinking space, has commissioned(委托)a tree-building structure from Pete Nelson, tree house book author and designer and builder of tree houses.“Studies show people can work better in nature. They are more productive,”says Mr Nelson.

1What is the text mainly about?

    A. The designs of the tree house hotels.

    B. The function of the tree houses.

    C. The trend for tree houses.

    D. The future development of houses.

2Why have tree houses become fun shelters?

    C. There are no places of amusement for children.

    D. Their construction have gotten modernized.

3For what purpose has Microsoft built a tree house structure?

    A. To help its employees work efficiently..

    B. To provide its workers with break residences.

    C. To offer its workers living convenience.

    D. To give people space to make friends.

4What can we infer from the text?

    A. All tree house hotels have interesting designs.

    B. Tree houses can make people safer nowadays.

    C. Kent Lindvall have made hand—built tree houses.

  • 22、Bouncier running shoes may be bad

Despite regular changes in running shoes over the years, it is estimated that every year at least a third of runners get muscle or joint injuries caused by repeated striking of the ground. Many sports shoe-makers have begun adding extra material to running shoes, to try to soften the impact on the legs---so-called maximalist footwear. 【1】

A new study suggests this is because the extra cushioning alters the spring-like mechanics of the legs of a runner in a way that means their legs experience a greater impact with every step.

Juha-Pekka Kulmala at the University of Helsinki in Finland and his colleagues studied the biomechanics of 12 healthy men aged between 22 and 32 as they ran in two shoes types.

The first wore regular running shoes with 33 millimetres of cushioning under the heel and 22 millimetres under the forefoot, and then highly-cushioned shoes with a heel 43 millimetres thick and a forefoot of 37 millimetres.

The participants ran at two set speeds---10 and 15 kilometres per hour---along a 30-metre platform that measured how hard their feet hit the ground. They also wore reflective stickers that allowed video cameras to capture their motion for analysis.

【2】 The peak impact force was 6 percent higher on average at the slower running speed and 11 percent higher at the faster speed.

Normally when we run, our legs act like springs, with the ankle and knee joints bending, so that the leg as a whole compresses( 压缩) as the foot lands, says Kulmala. But because highly cushioned shoes already compress under the feet, our bodies subconsciously respond by no longer bending the leg joints as much. In other words, our legs become stiffer(更僵硬的). 【3】

Kade Paterson at the University of Melbourne in Australia says the findings make sense from a biomechanical point of view. 【4】 I’ve seen patients who have reported improvements with maximalist running shoes and others who have got injured in them, so there probably isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach,” He says.

A.The video suggested this was because the runners bent their knees and ankles less when they wore the maximalist shoes.

    B.But injury rates haven’t fallen.

C.This means running in maximalist shoes may raise the risk of injuries.

D.Like many health-related things, we should be somewhere in the middle.

E.At both speeds, the runners landed on their feet harder when they wore the maximalist shoes than the regular kind.

F.However, he also maintains that long-term research is needed to see if maximalist shoes really lead to more injuries

  • 23、   Landscapes are not only the setting for history; they are also a major source of our sense of history and identity. Read them right, and historical landscapes can be more informative than any other kind of source. This is even more the case with sacred landscapes, which were reflection of our ancestors’ beliefs about their relation to the cosmos and can still today seem to hold a spiritual influence.

Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune to have spent time in many historical landscapes, hoping to picture something of the spirits of the people who shaped them over the centuries. I still remember years ago walking along the Inca sacred lines around Cusco, Peru. In this ancient landscape, old sites that once belonged to Incan royals had become torn Spanish mansions. Or many years ago, before the Gulf Wars, I took a journey through south Iraq, the heart land of civilization, where the desert is still crossed by dried-up riverbeds of the Euphrates and canals that once sustained the world’s first cities.

Britain also has its own magical ancient landscapes. From the Mesolithic to the Bronze and Iron Ages, rich layers of the past are still present in the landscape surrounding Stonehenge, even as traffic rushes down the A303. It is the A303 that is the problem. As the main road to the south west from the home counties, the road runs right past Stonehenge. One of humanity’s most famous monuments, Stonehenge is an archaeological landscape without parallel in Europe, and perhaps the world. The first circle at Stonehenge was made 5,000 years ago, and the great stone circle itself in a round 2,500 BC — the age of the pyramids! And the mysteries of this amazing monument and the complex prehistoric societies that produced it are by no means exhausted, as new discoveries continue to show.

All the more worrying to me then, this unique landscape is currently at the centre of a projected plan by Highways England, which aims to relieve congestion on the A303 by creating a four-lane road with a 1.8-mile tunnel, and an expressway interchange 1.5 miles to the west. While the National Trust and English Heritage have offered qualified support for the plan, UNESCO has expressed its opposition. Meanwhile, the Stonehenge Alliance, a group of archaeologists and environmental campaigners, says the plan is based on inadequate and obsolete information. In the end, the argument is about the totality of an ancient landscape, and that includes the ancient astronomical alignment that was purposefully chosen by our ancestors, and that will, in my view, be wrecked by the expressway interchange. Time perhaps for a rethink in the name of future generations?

1What can historical landscapes offer us?

A.Details of ancient lifestyle. B.Sacred writings

    C.Rich historical information D.Breathtaking sights.

2What did the author want to explore when touring historical landscapes?

A.Different architecture. B.His sense of belonging.

C.The rise of ancient cities. D.The spirits of ancestors.

3Which of the following is True about Stonehenge?

A.The first stone circle has a longer history than the pyramids.

B.New discoveries have solved the mysteries of the monument.

C.The ancient monument must have been the heart land of civilization.

D.The landscape surrounding Stonehenge has rich layers of the present.

4What is the author’s attitude towards the projected plan by Highways England?

A.He is for it because it will benefit the future generations.

B.He keeps cool but believes a better solution could be adopted.

C.It should be stopped because it will destroy the totality of the monument.

D.It is rather practical especially with qualified support from the government.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.续写的词数应为150左右。

Sam Watts was a 37-year-old fisherman living and Working in Canada. One day, Sam planned to head out into the Pacific at 9 am and work straight through until 5pm the next day. Joining Sam would be his crewman, 24-year-old Tom Buck.

Although Sam had been warned that a storm was coming, there was little that would keep him from going. As he sailed through the waves some 120 kilometers from land, Sam let out his three-kilometer-long fishing line.   The storm was gaining strength on land but had yet to reach the men far offshore. That changed around 1 am. Waves rocked the small boat, which began to turn sideways like an amusement park ride. “Get us out of here!” Tom screamed to Sam. “Let’s go back!”

With the winds and waves kicking up, the boat began to fill with water. Sam and Tom tried to pull in the fishing line together, but the high waves filled the boat with water, forcing Sam to make a hard decision. He cut the line, losing thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment and fish in the sea. He then pointed the boat toward a port five hours away. Sam then called his boss, William Fox, to report his position.

With dawn coming, Sam spotted the rise of the mountains on the horizon. He was figuring out a route through the dangerous waters when suddenly the motor stopped. “I couldn’t believe it,” Sam said. “We were 24 kilometers off the coast, and the motor died.” High waves raised and dropped the boat, sending the men crashing into the sides. “William, William!” Sam yelled into the radio. “If you’re coming to get me, come now!”

    “We’re coming!” William shouted back.

    Paragraph1:

Shortly after, the radio died and the wind continued to blow straight offshore, driving the men farther out to sea.
