21、To hug or not to hug? That’s the question right now. 【1】 Depending on where you live, many of us are vaccinated (打疫苗). But it’s hard to know for sure before you hug whether or not the person you’re leaning into has got vaccinated. Meanwhile, many of us are longing for the warmth of a hug after long stretches of social isolation. Humans biologically need touch, and a good long hug is one of the best ways to get it.
Degge White, a professor at Northern Illinois University, says that our need for a hug goes all the way back to the survival of our species. When we’re born, we can’t care for ourselves and we need to be comfortable with being held in order to survive. 【2】 “When we hug, our brains release oxytocin, the bonding hormone (荷尔蒙), as well as serotonin and endorphins.”
【3】 Because for humans, the security of our small groups and later communities was very important to survival. Close contact helped build civilization. As a result, our brains need each other—and when we miss out, it can have psychological repercussions (心理影响). “When we can’t hug, we don’t get that feeling of good hormones.”
We may not know what we’re getting from greeting our friends and family with a hug; we just enjoy it. 【4】 An air greeting is not enough. Research published in the journal Psychological Science has shown that hugging has a “stress buffering (缓冲)” effect that may even protect us from illness and infections.
Some people grow up in more formal households where hugging isn’t common. Others may experience abuse that makes hugging unpleasant. In both cases, when children don’t experience healthy touch, it can impact their development. Kids who didn’t grow up being held miss out on that sense of safety and protection. They may act out or isolate from those around them. 【5】 Some children may show too much affection, desiring any form of positive attention that they didn’t get at home.
A.In some cases, the opposite may also be true.
B.This bond and sense of community has an important role.
C.We’re in an uncertain place in the world of greetings manner.
D.It isn’t until those experiences are taken away that we feel pain and sadness.
E.When friends reach out in preparation for a hug, they feel hormones increasing.
F.We’re rewarded with a rush of feel-good chemicals that come from a comfortable hug.
G.The lack of touching might imply cold attitudes in interpersonal relationships.
22、For many of us, talking about money is embarrassing, especially revealing our income and spending habits in public. So it’s no wonder that seeking investment advice from computer program is so popular.
Consultancy firm Accenture found that 68% of global consumers would be happy to use robot-advice to plan for retirement, feeling it would be faster, cheaper, and fairer than human advice. “Many of our customers say they feel awkward in face-to-face meetings, preferring an online experience where they don’t feel nervous,” says Lynn Smith, a director of robot-advice firm Wealth Wizards. So how does robot-advice work and is it really any better than traditional financial advice?
Robot-adviser firms use algorithms (算法) to analyse your financial situation and goals and then work out an investment plan to suit you. Basically, you answer lots of questions online about your income, expenses, family situation, attitude to risk and so on, and then the algorithm allocates (分配) your savings to a series of investments, from index funds that aim to imitate a particular stock market index or sector, to fixed-income bonds.
Robot-advice is certainly growing in popularity. But are we really happy to give up the human adviser completely? “No” is the short answer. Accenture finds that a significant proportion of us still want human interaction, particularly when our finances are complex. “When a customer needs advice surpassing a number of different regulatory regimes, human advice will be required, says John Perks, managing director of life and pensions at UK insurer LV, which launched its Retirement Wizard robot-advice service two years ago.
The truth is that only about a quarter of funds managed by clever humans overcome the market as a whole, so when you take into account the much higher management fees you pay for that kind of service, the performance difference is likely to be marginal (微不足道的) for most of us.
The robots may be coming, but in this case at least, they seem to be on the side of the small investor trying to save for a comfortable retirement.
【1】What do we know about the robot-advice from the second paragraph?
A. It’s suitable for all.
B. It’s complex but fair.
C. It’s expensive but accurate.
D. It’s beneficial and relaxing.
【2】If you want to use robot-advice, you should first ________.
A. consult human advice
B. work out an investment plan
C. answer lots of questions online
D. analyse your financial situation
【3】What does the underlined phrase “that kind of service” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The allocation of retirement.
B. The performance difference.
C. Human fund management.
D. The robot-advice service.
【4】Why do we still need the human adviser according to the text?
A. Because some finances are complex.
B. Because some clients face retirement.
C. Because human interaction is necessary.
D. Because the human adviser offers better service.
23、Get cold hands, but hate wearing gloves? There might soon be a technology that can help you. The US scientists are developing an arm heater that allows people to go glove free in freezing conditions, helping them to carry out mechanical repairs or first aid.
In cold weather, wearing gloves might be a good choice because they can keep your hands at a comfortable temperature, but they often reduce flexibility. Take off your gloves, though, and numbing cold has an equally damaging effect on your fine motor skills, as well as being extremely uncomfortable.
John Castellani, an American physiologist who specializes in cold weather, and his team are attempting to solve the problem with a pair of electrically heated armbands worn around the forearms.
Dr. Castellani says that much of the problem is due to the body shutting down blood flow to surrounding areas. “Through research, we find keeping the forearms warm can prevent this,” he says.
A previous study showed that heating the torso (躯干) also keeps the hands warm, but that approach requires too much power for a portable device. Castellani’s team has found that warming just the forearm with a battery-powered gadget improves both finger temperature and ability in tasks requiring manual skill, such as putting pegs in a peg board. In a series of tests, the device reduced flexibility loss by 50 percent and finger strength loss by 90 percent compared with wearing no gloves at 0.5 ℃. The electric forearm heater helps by a combination of delivering warmer blood to the fingers and reducing blood vessel constriction (血管收缩). Even if the wearer can’t go glove free, it could allow them to wear thinner gloves.
【1】Why is the electric forearm heater being developed?
A.To deliver warmer blood to the fingers in cold weather.
B.To reduce blood vessel constriction in cold weather.
C.To have the wearer go without gloves in cold weather.
D.To keep hands warm and skillful in cold weather.
【2】What do we know about electrically heated armbands according to the passage?
A.They are difficult to carry around.
B.They have been on sale in the market.
C.They use less power comparatively.
D.They can heat the body together.
【3】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

26、阅读下面材料,根据共内容和所给段落汗头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was twenty then, teaching a class of thirty students in Toronto including Mike, a 10-year-old street kid. Having lost his father and mother, he lived with a mentally-disturbed grandmother.
He was always hungry, so each day I’d take him for breakfast before class. Each noon after I shared my lunch with him, I taught him new skills—using a microscope, constructing a camera etc.
One day Mike told me of his dream. Most kids in the class wanted to be doctors, teachers or some such thing, but not Mike! His desire was to be a gangster (强盗)! And he was serious about it.
I believed all children had a gift for what he wanted to be. If he wanted to be a gangster, I’d do all I could to help him become the very best “gangster”.
I had a plan. Every Saturday after we had breakfast, I took him to the Law Library of the city. I explained to him a good gangster had to know something about criminal law, and reading up on law was the only way to learn. His young mind was interested, and he dove in.
That was how we spent each Saturday morning that year. I’d drop him off at the law library. Three hours later, I’d return, pick him up for lunch and after a review of his morning’s work, take him home.
The following year I taught in another school far away, which prevented me continuing to participate physically with him on Saturday mornings. But I provided him with public transportation tickets so he could keep up his regular study at the library.
Later I got married and moved to London. Sadly, and to my great regret, I lost contact with Mike.
Years passed. I often thought of him, wondering what had become of him. Then, one day, I was back in Toronto on business, looking up the number of a former colleague in the telephone directory, and there, Mike’s name as part of a title of “JUDGES and LAWYERS” danced off the page into my eyes.
