21、 J. K. Rowling is a British author of the Harry Potter series of books. She composed much of her first work, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone in a poor situation, often planning out her chapters in cafes near her small apartment in Edinburgh.
Previous to Rowling penning the Harry Potter books, her life was full of struggle and loss. Her mother died in 1990 because of a disease. Her first marriage, to Jorje Arrantes in 1992, ended just over a year later. Unable to find work, Rowling struggled to support herself and her daughter on State Aid assistance. Her financial circumstances would not change until the late 1990s, when the Harry Potter series went beyond all expectations for success. Aided by the Scottish Arts Council, Rowling was able to complete her first novel, but initial encouragement from publishers was actually non-existent. She was told to find a day job, and the UK publisher, Bloomsbury, firstly published only 1000 copies of the novel, titled in the UK as Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone.
Within a half year of its publication in 1997, the novel achieved its first award, the Nestle Smarties Book Prize. A few months, later, it received the British Book Award for Best Children’s Book of The Year. By 1998, Scholastic purchased publication rights, and Rowling, now on her third part of the series, was enjoying great success.
The popularity of the series has made Rowling the most popular children’s author ever. The interest in the books from both adults and children aroused the enthusiastic reading among younger children eager for the next part of Harry’s adventures.
Queen Elizabeth II honored Rowling in 2000, titling her as an Officer of the British Empire. She remarried in 2001, to Dr. Neil Murray, with whom she has two children, David and Mackenzie. In her public life, she devotes time to causes dear to her, including relieving world poverty, and funding research towards medicine.

22、 Although toys' packaging says it's' educational , it doesn't make it so. That's the finding from a new study in JAMA Pediatrics that found some toys being marketed as language promoters got in the way of learning.
Research shows that for kids to understand, speak and eventually read or write a language, they need to hear it -- lots of it. And it's' never too early for parents and to caregivers to get talking. That explains the booming industry in talking electronic toys that claim to help kids learn language.
Professor Anna Sosa, of Northern Arizona University, led the study and says she gave families three different kinds of toys to play with: books, traditional toys like humble blocks and a shape sorter, and electronic toys. Sosa says she picked those toys because they are advertised in their packaging as language-promoters for babies between the ages of 10 and 16 months.
"We had a talking on farm-animal names and things," Sosa says of the electronic toys. "We had a baby cell phone. And we had a baby laptop. So you open the cover and start pushing buttons, and it tells you things. The parent-child couples were asked to play separately with each type of toy over the course of three days."
"When there's something else that's doing some talking, the parents seem to be sitting on the sidelines and letting the toy talk for them and respond for them, "Sosa says. "That's bad because the best way a toy can promote language in infants and toddlers is by stimulating interaction between parent and child. There's simply no evidence that a young child can learn language directly from a toy. It isn't responsive enough. It isn't social."
As for the other toys, traditional blocks and puzzles stimulated more conversation than the electronic toys, and books outscored them all. But don't underestimate the humble block. While traditional toys fell short of books in interaction quantity, Sosa notes, they kept pace in terms of quality.

23、Boston wants to be smarter. The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents' needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today's cities liveable. Boston has discovered that it also needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life.
Kris Carter rolled out Boston's smart city program in 2014. It started with an App that residents could download to report locations where sidewalks needed repair. The city sorted out those reports and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work.
The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts(警报) came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone - equipped residents was highest. "The complaints from the App didn't always correlate with the greatest community need for repairs, " explains Carter.
Carter's group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy(精通技术的)residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get out and walk the city's 1,700 miles of sidewalks to take notes on their condition.
Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, says Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents' lives. Take the sidewalk repair program, walking on the streets was proved a useful, if inefficient way to prioritize repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers' mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify sidewalk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods.
“Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good," says Carter,"We're really always looking for whatever mix of approaches best solves the problem."

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a winter Sunday good for skiing, Sue arrived at their holiday chalet (棚屋) with joy. Sue’s skis were sticking out behind her. Mark, another skier, tripped over Sue’s skis. Before Sue could apologize, Mike shouted, “Your skis are in the way. You’ve got big smelly feet!” In view of his attitude, Sue ignored him. Mark lost face and was more angry.
The ski lift took all the skiers to the top of the mountain. The hard snow of the piste (滑雪道) was below them. Then Sue skied down the mountain. As a good skier, she didn’t fall over. Mark, along with his good friend David, was watching her with envy and anger. They were also good skiers but they didn’t know Sue very well. “She’s good,” David said. “But we’re better,” Mark responded with dissatisfaction.
The young people skied all day. They enjoyed themselves and forgot everything. On Wednesday morning, the young people were waiting for the ski lift when their teacher announced a ski race. The race would be arranged for the last day of the holiday on a long and difficult ten-kilometer piste. Everybody wanted to win! They went up the mountain, put on their skis and skied down the piste, practicing for the race. Sue skied fast, so did Mark and David. Obviously, these three became powerful opponents.
It was Saturday and the race was going to be held in the afternoon. Sue was hungry and left her skis at the side of a café. She sat down and ordered lunch. Later, David and Mark came in. They also headed to the side to put their skis there. Mark noticed Sue’s skis and aimed a kick angrily at them. Then he found a screw (螺丝) on Sue’s ski was loose, unsure whether it was caused by the force or it was like that originally. “Sue’s skis won’t work. We’re sure to win,” Mark said and pointed. They smiled knowingly at each other.
