The strange-looking painting of an imaginary man in a dark long dress left the auction block at Christie’s for $432，500 on Oct．25 in New York City．
The portrait—designed in the“Old Master”style of European fine artists from centuries ago—only partially fills the canvas(画布)，leaving empty space around the central figure．It appears to represent a man with an unclear face，dressed in clothing similar to that worn by subjects painted by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn in the 17th century．
Of course，a computer didn’t pick up a brush and become an artist．The AI that generated(生成)the image had human programmers—a Parisian art team called Obvious．To generate the portrait，titled“Portrait of Edmond De Belamy”，the Obvious team first fed the neural network a diet of 15，000 images painted between the 14th and 20th centuries，to train it to recognize visual elements in fine art，Obvious artist Hugo Caselles—Dupré told Christie’s．The algorithm that eventually created an original image had two parts that worked against each other，called the Generator and the Discriminator．
“The Generator makes a new image based on the set，and then the Discriminator tries to spot the difference between a human-made image and one created by the Generator．The aim is to fool the Discriminator into thinking that the new images are real—life portraits．Then，we have a result，”he told Christie’s．
GAN’s final image was then inkjet—printed on canvas and framed，according to Obvious．At the bottom of the portrait is a mathematical formula(公式)representing the algorithm that created it，Obvious artists wrote on the team’s website．
The goal of the painting and of Obvious，also co-founded by Hugo Caselles-Dupré and Gauthier Vernier，was to prove“artificial intelligence can do more than operate driverless cars or transform industry—it can be creative，”CNBC reported．

22、 A team of biologists recently studied rain-frogs in the forests of northern Ecuador. While doing so, they discovered a Mindo harlequin toad (五彩蟾蜍). The creature hadn't been seen alive in 30 years. The scientists couldn't believe their eyes.“The three of us spotted it,” Melissa Costales, a conservation biologist, said. Until recently, 13 of the 25 species of harlequin toads in Ecuador had gone unseen since the 1980s or early 1990s. Climate crisis is damaging their living conditions, and they can't find food that is suitable for them. Besides, people hunt for them to make money. However， scientists hold that most of them had been wiped out by a terrible disease called chytrid, which is especially harmful to the harlequin toad.
The Mindo harlequin is the latest harlequin toad species “to come back from the dead,” says Costales. Since 2003, eight other species have been found, three of them in Ecuador. Costales says the Mindo harlequin may have developed a resistance to the disease. That would explain the toad’s reappearance. And it could spell good news for other harlequins. Since discovering the first one, Cos-tales' s team has found five more. They were all tested for chytrid. None had the disease. But that doesn’t mean the survival of the species is guaranteed, Costales says. The harlequin toad is still endangered.
Costales is developing a conservation plan with a zoology museum in Ecuador. She wants to make sure the Mindo harlequin toad doesn’t fall back into dying out.“Each rediscovery gives us a second chance to develop better conservation strategies (策略) ,”she says.“Not every day do we have the opportunity to rediscover a species that we believed to be extinct.

Over the years, I have had some kind of contact with all of the recipients except the heart recipient. I’m very sorry for that. I would love to hear something from the heart recipient’s family. There are so many things that I wonder about her. I wonder if she is anything like Stacey. Does she smile all the time? Does she enjoy writing stories and poetry? I do hope that they can contact us!
