二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、

Here are some of the world’s most impressive subways.

The Tokyo Metro and Toei Lines

Features: The Tokyo Metro and Toei lines that compose Tokyo’s massive subway system carry almost 8 million people each day, making it the busiest system in the world. The system is famous for its oshiya--- literally, “pusher”--- who shove passengers into crowded subway cars so the doors can close. And you think your commute is hell.

    The Moscow Metro

Features: The Moscow Metro has some of the most beautiful stations in the world. The best of them were built during the Stalinist era and feature chandeliers, marble moldings and elaborate murals. With more than 7 million riders a day, keeping all that marble clean has got to be a burden.

    The Hong Kong Metro

Features: The Hong Kong MTR has the distinction of being one of the few subway systems in the world that actually turns a profit. It’s privately owned and uses real estate development along its tracks to increase income and ridership. It also introduced “Octopus cards” that allow people to not only pay their fares electronically, but buy stuff at convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants and even parking meters. It’s estimated that 95 % of all adults in Hong Kong own an Octopus card.

    Shanghai Metro

Features: Shanghai is the third city in China to build a metro system, and it has become the country’s largest in the 12 years since it opened. Shanghai Metro has 142 miles of track and plans to add another 180 miles within five years. By that point, it would be three times larger than Chicago “L”. The system carries about 2.18 million people a day.

    The London

    Metro

Features: Londoners call their subway the Underground, even though 55 percent of it lies above ground. No matter when you’ve got the oldest mass-transit system in the world, you can call it anything you like. Trains started in1863 and they’ve been running ever since. Some 3 million people ride each day, every one of them remembering to “Mind the gap”.

【1】 Which one can provide the riders some wonderful decorations at the stations?

    A. The Tokyo Metro and Toei Lines  B. The Moscow Metro

    C. The London Metro D. The Hong Kong MTR

【2】We can learn from the passage that Shanghai Metro ________.

    A. carries the most people each day

    B. is the world’s largest

  • 22、When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about e-waste. The article said that people were throwing away their e-waste in places it should never go. This was dangerous, the article said, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals and metals like lead. These harmful substances (物质) can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies — and people.

Alex showed the article to a few of his classmates. They were worried too. But what could they do about this problem with e-waste? How would they even start? “The first thing we did,” Alex says, “was to learn more about the problem.” Alex and his friends spent several weeks gathering information about the chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They learned how to dispose (处理) of e-waste properly and how it could be recycled. “Then,” he says, “we had to find out what the situation was in our town. So we sent out a survey.”

What they found shocked them: Of the people who answered the survey, only one in eight even knew what e-waste was, let alone how to properly dispose of it. Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot. The drive lasted two days, and they collected over 21,000 pounds of e-waste.

The next step was to set up an e-waste drop-off center for the town and to find a responsible company to recycle the waste. That was when Alex and his friends learned another scary fact about e-waste — some irresponsible recycling companies don’t break down the e-waste and dispose of it safely themselves. Instead, they ship it overseas to countries such as China and Nigeria, where local environmental laws are not applied. “We checked carefully online to make sure the company we chose didn’t do this,” Alex says.

Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message about safe disposal of e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s poisonous trash.”

【1】What can we learn about Alex from paragraph 1 and paragraph 2?

A.He was curious about chemistry experiments.

B.He possessed a strong sense of responsibility.

【2】What does the underlined word “drive” mean?

    A.Campaign.

    B.Imagination.

    C.Performance.

    D.Technology.

【3】Why did some companies transport the e-waste to other countries?

A.Lack of available space was the reason for shipping.

B.Recycling was totally banned in their own country.

C.They were running their companies on a tight budget.

D.They were not charged with insecurely disposing it.

【4】What’s the suitable title for the text?

    A.Reusing School Computers

    B.Recycling Electronic Waste

    C.Meeting a challenge

    D.Doing Scientific Experiment

  • 23、That youngsters were glued to online games on their smart phones was a great concern for Ngurang Meena, a school teacher in Nirjuli. The 30-year-old social science teacher, who ran the Ngurang Learning Institute, an adult literacy centre, said that she felt disheartened when she read student papers. "The graph of student performance is falling every year. It breaks my heart whenever I see answer sheets-basic grammar skills are missing and there's an absence of any cohesive(连贯性的)expression. They lack guidance and reading culture is almost zero," Meena said. When her school and the centre she ran had to close due to infectious diseases, she planned to do something to solve the problem.

Inspired by a similar proposal in Mizoram, Meena set up a bookshelf with around 80 books as well as some benches on the side of the road in Nirjuli on August 30th, 2020, where passers-by could spend time reading. The selections included motivational books, biographies and novels as well as comics for young children. "I have to please the children with sweets to sit and read, but that is okay." she laughed.

Meena's bookshelf became a hit among youngsters who spent hours in the reading corner. Within two months, her effort became the talk of the town.

Now, generous contributions of books come in from the public and she is even receiving requests to set up such libraries in other parts of the state, including one in the capital, Itanagar. Since the tiny libraries are far from the main town, she also lends books out to those who want to read at home.

"I never thought that this would become such a big inspiration," Meena said. "Since childhood, we have been told that books are our best friends. The next generation of kids is focused on games and other things. I don't want them to head on the wrong track," she added.

【1】What's the aim of Meena's reading program?

A.To help adults learn cohesive expression.

B.To care for youngsters lacking in reading.

C.To keep Ngurang Learning Institute running well.

D.To highlight the importance of reading for adults.

【2】What did Meena do to encourage young kids to read more?

    A.She offered them transportation.

B.She offered some rewards to them.

C.She chose novels with beautiful covers.

D.She selected books covering every category.

【3】Which words can best describe Meena's libraries?

    A.Influential and meaningful.

    B.Small and useless.

    C.Large but impractical.

    D.Widespread but unwelcome.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Books: Sources of Knowledge

    B.The Roadside Reading Corner

C.The Library: a Heaven for the Young

D.New Ideas about Setting a Reading Plan

  • 24、   Last month our class project was to make a school newspaper. Our teacher divided us into groups and each group was supposed to work on a column. I missed the first planning meeting because of a dentist appointment so my group filled me in the next day. “We decided to do a gossip column,” Emily informed me. “We take along our notebooks and pay extra-close attention to everything happening around us.”

Austin read from his notebook: “James either has a cold or really bad allergies because he's been sneezing nonstop.” Jessia said, “Jackson is either going through a major growth spurt or getting ready to run a marathon because he's been eating two entire sandwiches for lunch.

This gossip-column was making me very uncomfortable. It was already spinning out of control. “Hold on,” I said, “Don't you think kids will feel embarrassed to have that stuff shared with the school?” Austin jumped in, saying that I had a point and the gossip-column idea was not that friendly.

Then we thought about for a bit, and then Emily brightened. “What if we do a friendly gossip column instead? We can call it an op — gop column!” And that's exactly what we did. The next day at school, we took out notebooks everywhere we went. But this time, we wrote down the good stuff we witnessed. Here are a few snippets from the column we ended up publishing.

Katie Myers was spotted picking up other people's litter and throwing it into the garbage can without even being asked.

Danny Gonzales was seen helping a second-grader get a kickball unstuck from a high-up, hard-to-reach place.

And Soe Zaleski was overheard very patiently explaining a maths problem to a very grateful somebody.

1What did the author's team members do the day the project was announced?

A.They were divided into three groups. B.They went to the dentist's on schedule.

C.They disused their topic with the author. D.They gathered information for their topic.

2Which of the following can best describe the author's attitude to the gossip-column?

    A.Supportive. B.Indifferent. C.Opposed. D.Objective.

3What does the underlined word “spurt” in the second paragraph most probably mean?

    A.Age limit. B.Sudden increase.

    C.Inborn disability. D.The highest height.

4What's the author's purpose in writing the passage?

A.To call on people to spread people's good deeds. B.To introduce the content of their op-gop column.

C.To show people love to catch gossip news. D.To prove it's easy to catch the gossip news.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Walking across campus with every pair of eyes on you can be embarrassing, especially when you’re 13 years old. I looked around me in desperate search of a friendly face, a smile, anything. I was quite disappointed, to say the least. And I, in turn, felt somewhat foolish, walking across campus with a false smile on my face. I was simply attempting to follow the advice my mother had given me years before: when things get awkward, smile. No matter where you are a smile will always be understood. A smile is universal. At that very moment, however, I felt my mother’s advice didn’t work.

On top of it all, my mind was racing with questions and concerns typical of any 13-year old on the first day of school: where would I sit at lunch? Who would I talk to? Not to mention how would I make friends when I didn’t even speak the language? My heartbeat quickened and I felt nervous. Still, I did my best to maintain calm so as not to let my guard down and reveal to others just how scared I truly was.

When the teacher introduced me to the class as the “American girl”, 10 sets of hands immediately shot up. Some students had questions, and others wanted to practice their English with me. Because I didn’t speak much Chinese yet, I communicated with the other students through hand motions mixed in with broken English and Chinese. Despite the attention, I wasn’t sure how much of it was positive. It was almost as if they weren’t sure what to make of me and I was being examined. Then again, who could blame them? After all I was the first American ever to attend the school. So essentially, we were all first timers.

    注意:   1.续写词数应为 150 左右;   2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Then came the first class——Chinese painting.
