Comfort Zone is a state of mind where there is the least stress. However, stepping into the learning zone can help to bring out the best in us. Here are the reasons.

Challenging yourself can help you do at your best. Stepping outside one’s comfort zone is important to personal development. How can we expect to make ourselves better if we only stick to habit and routine(日常)? We should try something we might not succeed at.

Taking risks is what helps us grow. As children, we’re natural risk-takers. But as we get older and learn to fear failure, we start trying fewer new things. We pay a heavy price for our fear of failure. There is no learning without some difficulty.

Facing new challenges can help us age better. Our comfort zones seem to become smaller as we get older, but if we can keep expanding them, we’ll open ourselves up to a greater world as we age. As we step into the learning zone, we will get more comfortable with the skills gradually and we’ll start to move into the comfort zone. A study found that learning new life skills can help our brain sharp as we get older.

However, don’t push yourself too far. Have you heard of “Yerkes-Dodson Law”? It means performance increases as stress grows, but only up to a point. If the level of stress becomes too high, performance will go down. When stress becomes too great for us to deal with, we enter the danger zone.

【1】Compared with the comfort zone, people in the learning zone may ______.

    A.learn to fear failure

    B.face more challenges

    C.try fewer risks

    D.feel less stress

【2】From Paragraph 3, we will learn more if we ______.

    A.avoid difficulties

    B.get older

    C.take risks

    D.feel natural

【3】The underlined word “expanding” means ______ in Chinese.

    A.填充

    B.删除

    C.缩小

    D.扩大

【4】“Yerkes-Dodson Law” can be described by Graph(图表) ______.

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

【5】The best title of the text might be ______.

    A.Comfort Zone Makes Us Safe

    B.The State of Comfort Zone

    C.Step Outside Comfort Zone

    D.Never Fear Comfort Zone

My name is Jackson. I'm a great reader with good memory. I rememberalmost everything I read. But I don't like to speak in class. When Mr.Knoll announced an oral book report, the idea of going up and having myclassmates staring at me while I talked filled me with anxiety.

As for the date, if the book report was due in two weeks, I would do itright then. Mr. Knoll, though, gave us a month to get the report ready, so Ithought I had plenty of time.

Finally, I chose Fire-Hunter by Jim Kjelgaard. It looked really interesting. I read the first few pagesand then I set it aside. I wasn't worried. I had plenty of time. Then the book got buried in the clutter(杂物)in my room.

Before I knew it, the date of the book report was a week away. Some kids had already finished. Iwas in a panic. I raced home and found the book. Trembling(颤抖),I turned to the back and discoveredthere were 218 pages! I read like crazy

    ending that way."

    I gulped(倒吸气).

"You told a pretty good story”he continued. "The assignment was an oral book report. You did a great job on the oral part’

    "Uh, thanks," I said.

"When you actually finish Fire-Hunter, please come to me and give me the book report’

"Yes, I definitely will," I said. I knew I would never make that mistake again.

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、根据短文内容和首字母提示,在下文空格处填入适当的词使短文完整。在答题卡标有题号的横线上,完整地写出空缺处各单词的正确形式。(每空一词)

Usually, you don’t find the same words in different languages. But there is an exception for the word “OK”!

The word OK first appeared in the Boston Morning Post on March 23, 1839.

It was an abbreviation of the phrase “oll Korrect”, an incorrect s1 of “all correct”. Although it began as a joke, people later u2 the phrase on documents(文件) or through telegraphs(电报) to say that all was well.

This year, OK celebrated its 179th b3. We use this expression countless times every day. “How about two o’clock? OK?” “OK then.” The word OK is e4 to say, write and understand.

Besides, it is more neutral(中立的) than many words. Allen Metcalf, American author of OK : The Improbable story of America’s Greatest Word, told The Times, “What OK provided that other words did not was neutrality, a way to express agreement w5 having to offer an opinion.” For example, if someone asks you to go for a walk after lunch, you can s6 answer “OK”. There you go — no extra opinions.

OK can be spelled in different ways: okay or O.K. they are all p7 the same. But “OK” is the most widely accepted spelling and is often used in writing. Some people, however, like the spelling “okay” b8 it looks more like a word.

Sometimes, people also say short forms of OK like “K”. For example, someone might say, “I’m just going to the supermarket, but I’ll be b9 in 10 minutes.” You could reply with “K”.

OK is so useful that it’s said worldwide. You may not know the l10 of someone you’re talking with, but saying “OK” with gestures(手势) can help you communicate.

    There’s always hope

I was sitting around the other morning thinking about some of my former(以前的) students. When I do that, my thoughts always turn to Vincent.

Eighteen years ago, on the first day of third grade, when I had my class write something about themselves, he just sat there. So I took him outside to see what was wrong. “You can ___________about something else; anything you want.” I offered .He turned to me and shouted,” I can’t write!” and threw his pencil.

Vincent was difficult and _________ .He acted out. He threw things. He refused to work, to be quiet, to sit down.

So these many years later, I wondered what he was up to. With time on my hands, I googled him and looked him up on Facebook and before long I found him .And after a few texts we agreed to meet. And he told me his _________.

Vincent knew he was smart, but he also knew he couldn’t do what other kids did. He had to move around and talk. For him, sitting still, listening and reading, didn’t __________. The more he tried to do the things on his terms, the more we forced him to do the things on our terms and the angrier he got. The angrier he got, the more trouble he got into.

In other words, we __________ him.

But he wouldn’t let me tell him that. He took full responsibility for his behavior. He remembered feeling _________ for acting out.

That __________ me. Kids like Vincent are always angry about something ;they hold the world responsible for the consequence(后果).

This story also had one of us turning Vincent around. But none of us did that for him. There were no excellent teachers like Annie Sullivan or Jaime Escalante. That didn’t mean we didn’t ___________. I remember countless conversations, trying to understand them, going to his little League games.

It was Vincent who turned Vincent around , along with a junkie (吸毒者) house painter he worked with after failing through high school. This guy clearly scared (惊吓) him straight; talked him into going to ___________.

But it was Vincent who attended classes and got straight A’s for two years .And it was Vincent who got accepted into ten different universities, including Stanford and UW. And it was Vincent who landed a great job at a big tech company.

Vincent is completely different from 18 years ago. I couldn’t be happier for him.

And for me, the ___________is simple but powerful---there’s always hope.

    【1】A. talk   B. read     C. write   D. hear

    2A. angry     B. lazy   C. careless    D. disappointed
