四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   OUR KIDS ARE AMAZING-especially compared with everybody else's (who seem to cry all the time). How do you show your love for your kids this holiday season? With toys that are smooth and colorful, interactive and exciting. And with ones that have educational value-because you are the boss.

    1) FLAX ART HOSPITAL PUZZLE AND PLAY SET

Here is a toy that doesn't need power-and the kids have to put it together themselves. This 50-piece puzzle set is made of soft-edged hardwood and makes a complete hospital, with an X-ray room. It also includes eight patients, a car and a driver. $135; flaxart.com.

    2) TINY LOVE ACTIVITY BALL

Sure, it's cool, but this colorful baby toy also develops problem solving and motor skills. It has a head and legs, a magnetic (磁性的) hand and a tail. Suitable for little ones from 6 to 36 months. $19.95; tinylove.com.

    3) ROBOSAPIEN

This small, remote control robot is really powerful. It performs 67 preprogrammed (预编程序的) functions, including throwing, kicking, picking up and dancing. You can even program your own function, which, sadly, does not include doing windows. $99; robosapienonline.com.

    4) MINI PEDAL CAR

Want a Mini Cooper but can't fit the family inside? Get one for the kids. They can jump into this Mini car, which comes in hot orange with a single adjustable seat, and ride away. But it could spoil them for that used car they'll be driving when they turn 16. For ages 3 to 5.$189; mininss.com (click on "gear up", then "Mini motoring gear").

  • 25、Recently in a class in Tokyo, a robot teacher called Saya called out the names of students, and smiled at them. Her funny face made the students laugh. However, the inventor says she is not going to take the place of human teachers.

Unlike other robots without feelings, Saya has six feelings—surprise, fear, dislike, anger, happiness and sadness. She can also say simple phrases such as “Thank you” and “Sorry”.

“Robots that look like humans have an important influence on children and older people,”

    Hiroshi Kobayashi, Saya’s developer, said.

Saya was first invented as a receptionist (接待员) robot in 2004. Later, she was tested in a real Tokyo classroom with many fifth and sixth grade students. “Although she still can’t do much more than call out names and shout orders like ‘Be quiet’, the children had great fun,” Kobayashi says. “They were very happy when Saya called out their names.”

Ronald C. Arkin, a scientist, says people should do more study on the interaction (互动)

between humans and robots before people depend on robots too much.

Kobayashi says, “Saya is just meant to help people, and we should not hold too much hope for her ability. She has no thought and no ability to learn. She is just a tool.”

“You're always hungry, ” Sheila said, “We'll have something when we get to my house. ”

Kelly looked at Sheila, who was walking quickly down the sidewalk. Sheila had long, beautiful red hair and always wore nice clothes. Kelly had short hair and many of her clothes were hand-me-downs.

No one was home when they got to Sheila’s house. No one ever seemed to be home at Sheila’s house. Kelly had two sisters and a brother. “ It must be amazing to have the whole house to yourself. I’m lucky if I can be alone for five minutes, ” said Kelly.

“Well, I can do whatever I want. Do you want to order a pizza? There’s nothing in the fridge.” There was never anything in Sheila’s fridge.

“That’s okay, ” said Kelly. “ I have to go home for dinner soon. ”

“But I would go crazy if people were telling me what to do all the time.”

“Well, you’re lucky,” said Kelly. Sheila was lucky. She had perfect hair, perfect clothes, a perfect house. “ I would give anything to be Sheila for just one day,” thought Kelly.

The phone rang. “ Hi, Mom, ” Kelly heard Sheila say. “No, it’s okay. I understand.” She hung up. “My mom’s having dinner out again,” she said. “Are you sure you can’t stay for pizza?”

“Sorry. I have to go or I’ll be late for dinner,” said Kelly.

五、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 28、When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy a holiday present. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.

I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a band basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (收款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face.

Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. “You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you’ll pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”

Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.

I would like to say “thank you to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in a fire. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.
