24、From the time each of my children started school, I packed their lunches. And in each lunch I packed, I left a note. The note might be a thank-you for a special moment, or a few words of encouragement for the coming test or sporting event.
When they were little, they loved their notes. And when I went back to teaching, they even put notes in my lunches. As they grew older, my elder son, Marc, told me that he no longer needed my daily notes. Telling him that he no longer needed to read them but I still needed to write them, I continued the tradition until the day he graduated.
Six years after high school graduation, Marc called and asked if he could stay at home for a couple of months. He had spent those years well, and he was very successful. He lived far away from home. With his younger sister leaving for college, I was especially looking forward to seeing Marc at home.
Since I was still making lunch every day for his younger brother, I packed one for Marc, too. Imagine my surprise when I got a call from my 24-year-old son, complaining (抱怨) about his lunch.
“Did I do something wrong? Aren’t I still your kid? Don’t you love me any more, Mom?” he asked.
I laughingly asked him what was wrong.
“My note, Mom,” he answered. “Where’s my note?”
This year my younger son will be in high school. He, too, has said that he is too old for notes. But like his elder brother and sister, he will receive those notes till the day he graduates.

26、 An old woman had two large pots (罐), one on each end of a pole (扁担). I always see her carrying the pole with the pots across her neck.
One of the pots had a crack (裂缝) in it while the other pot was perfect and always carried a full pot of water. At the end of the long walk from the well to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half-full.
For two years this happened daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. One day, I asked the old woman: “ Why don’t you get another pot? The cracked one always makes water drop all the way back to your house.”
The old woman smiled: “ Did you notice that there are flowers on one side of the road, but not on the other side? That’s because I have always known about the crack, so I planted flower seeds (种子) on the side of the road. And every day while I walk back, I can water them.”
“For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to make my house more beautiful. Without the cracked pot, I would not have this beauty.”
Each of us has our own cracks. But it’s these cracks that make our lives together so interesting and meaningful. So, accept these imperfections (不完美) and try to make good use of them.

27、A company named Manta5 in New Zealand has developed an electric bicycle that can be used on water—the Manta5 eBike.
The company describes its invention as half-bike and half-plane. It says riding one feels like normal cycling, but on the water. It uses a battery (电池), motor and underwater wings to move across water about 100 kilometers in five hours. The bikes are made to be strong, but still light enough to carry.
Manta5 was started in early 2011 by Guy Howard and Roland who are both passionate about cycling. They used to go cycling and fell in love with it deeply. Howard had wanted there to be more choices for would-be water cyclists, and when he met Roland, he decided to try and make that happen. It took the company eight years to develop the bike, but it was able to show a prototype (原型) in 2017. The company says that a short video of that first bike got 350 million views on the Internet.
The first bikes that Manta5 produced sold out in six months. It says that riders in New Zealand are already fans, and are using them to ride across lakes, rivers and ocean waves.
The company now hopes the bikes will become popular in the US as well. At $8,990, however, the eBike certainly isn’t cheap.
Greg Johnston, CEO at Manta5, says that learning to ride the water bike is like cycling for the first time: You might have to try a few times, but it’s a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. The company even believes that in the near future, biking across the water could be a sport, and even be included in the Olympics.
