  • 24、Yang Nan, 17, was happy to move to her new home in a northern area of Beijing. She was told that her neighborhood used to be farmland planted with vegetables, corn and wheat. But looking at the new road, beautiful park and supermarkets, Yang couldn't see any sign that food was once grown there.

Yang is not alone. In recent years, many Chinese people have moved into new houses in country areas. Tall buildings have been built everywhere in the suburbs. The crops and fruit trees are no more. But these changes have caused problems too, warns Gan Zang chun, an official at the Ministry of Land and Resources (国土资源部).

"Chinese cities are growing fast. This has made the area for farmland much smaller. This is really bad for the country's ability to grow food, not to mention the lives of farmers," said Gan last Monday.

The country needs farmland to grow food for the people of China. But the recent rise in house prices has made selling land a good business. A lot of land has been used to build new houses for sale.

Pollution, which makes land useless, is another reason for the big drop in China's farmland. About 2.67 million square kilometers of land in China have been polluted and turned into desert.

The government wants China to have at least 120 million hectares(公顷) of farmland. But there are only about 121.8 million hectares left. "It will be really difficult to reach the goal," Gan said. He said that the government would fight illegal land use and stop farmland from becoming desert.

【1】The article seems to tell us that .

    A. farmland is in danger

    B. countrysides are turned into towns

    C. farmland has been sold

    D. Chinese cities are grown fast

【2】From what Gan Zangchun said, he is worrying about .

    A. China's development

    B. land and resources

    C. Chinese people's life

    D. illegal land use

【3】What size of the land have been polluted and turned into desert?

    A. 120 million hectares.

    B. 121.8 million hectares.

    C. 2.67 million square kilometers.

    D. Millions of square kilometers.

  • 25、The Chinese actor, Wang Luoyong, touched the hearts of many Chinese in the USA. He read a letter by Zhuge Liang to the emperor of Shu during the Three Kingdoms (三国) period in the new season of Growling Tiger, Roaring Dragon (《虎啸龙吟》).

The letter has been read by so many students. We had never thought that the text written in old Chinese could be so beautifully read in another language. As a result, foreigners begin to show interest in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, translated by C.H. Brewitt Tailor and Robert E. Hegel.

Earlier in November, 1979, pupils in England were able to watch a new TV program called Monkey. Most of them were hearing the story for the first time. However, the story of the Monkey King isn’t new to Chinese children in the traditional Chinese book Journey to the West.

As soon as the TV program came out, Western children became interested in reading this story because the clever Monkey King keeps fighting to help the weak and never gives up.

Chinese scholars (学者) should do a better job of introducing Chinese literature (文学) to the rest of the world. At the same time, we could encourage Western schools to try something different.

Reading international literature is a good way of understanding other people in the world. And the more we understand each other, the more beautiful the world will be.

【1】What touched many Chinese in the USA?

A.Zhuge Liang wrote such a moving letter.

B.The Chinese actor acted Zhuge Liang so well.

C.The letter by Zhuge liang was read in English.

D.Many students can read the letter by Zhuge Liang.

【2】When was the TV program Monkey first shown in England?

    A.About 20 years ago.

    B.About 30 years ago.

    C.About 40 years ago.

    D.About 50 years ago.

【3】Why did Western children like the Money King?

A.He is clever and has a handsome look.

B.He helps the weak and never gives up.

C.He teaches children skills to fight the bad.

D.He is the hero of a traditional Chinese book.

    【4】What is the writer’s hope?

A.Chinese literature goes to the world.

    B.Chinese learn about the world.

C.Foreigners come to learn from China.

    D.Chinese scholars write great works.

  • 26、   LONDON—Manchester is Britain’s fattest city, a survey for “Men’s Health” has found, beating Glasgow for the first time since the magazine started examining the issue three years ago.

Editor Pete Muir said the survey had looked at a variety of factors from gym membership to heart disease rates to find the fattest city. “Manchester has more fast food restaurants than anywhere else in the UK,” he told Reuters. “People are taking the easy choice—eating and then just sitting in front of the TV.”

Manchester’s problem is part of a wider trend. On Thursday, the Office of National Statistics (ONS) blamed a lack of exercise and poor diet for a fifth of adult Britons being obese (过度肥胖的). “Obesity is a major risky factor connected with heart disease, diabetes and premature death (糖尿病和早亡).” said an ONS survey. “None of the 108 young men in the survey reported eating five portions of fruit or vegetables on average each day.”

In Manchester, the head of the city’s public health programs said he did not believe that they were necessarily the fattest city, but that they did have problems and were aiming to address them. Social deprivation (贫困) was a major factor. “One of the myths is that the stressed-out rich businessman is the one who is overweight,” David Regan told Reuters. “In fact, it is the poor areas that have the most problems. We aim not to be the fattest but the fittest city but we have a long way to go.”

Second in the survey is Stoke-on-Trent, followed by Liverpool, Swansea and Lecicester. Glasgow is sixth.

1Manchester took the place of __________ and became Britain’s fattest city.

    A.Liverpool B.London C.Stoke-on-Trent D.Glasgow

2Obesity may lead to the following EXCEPT __________.

    A.Heart disease B.diabetes C.premature death D.a lack of exercise

3This article is most probably taken from __________.

    A.a newspaper B.a science book C.a novel D.a biography

  • 27、   For many American university students, the weeklong spring break holiday means an endless party on a sunny beach. In Panama City Beach, Florida, a city with a population of around 36,000, more than half a million university students arrive during the month of March to play and party, making it hit number one spring break place in the United Stated.

A weeklong party is not everyone, however, and a growing number of American university students have found a way to make spring break matter. For them, joining or leading a group of volunteers to help solve problems such as homelessness or pollution makes spring break a special learning experience that university students can feel good about.

During one spring break week, students from James Madison University in Virginal took part in 15"spring break" trips to nearby states, three others to more distant parts of the United States, and five international trips. One group of JMU students traveled to Bogalusa, Louisiana, to help rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane(飓风) Katrina. Another group traveled to Mississippi to organize creative activities for children living in a homeless shelter. One group of students did go to Florida, but not to lie on the sand. They performed some tiring work such as keeping hiking roads in good condition and helping protect the native Florida plants.

Students who take part in spring break projects find them very rewarding(值得的). While most university students have to get their degrees before they can start helping people, student volunteers are able to help people right now. On the other hand, the buildings or rooms where they live or stay are far from attractive(迷人的). Students often sleep on the floor of a school or church. But they only pay around $250 for meals and transportation, which is much less than some of their friends spend traveling to more traditional spring break hot places.

Spring break projects appear to be growing in popularity at universities across the United States. Some students take the opportunity to meet new friends. Others want to exercise their beliefs to make the world a better place. Whatever their reasons, these students have discovered something that give them rich rewards along with a break from school work.

1How many university students travel to Panama Beach City every March for spring break?

    A.around 36,000 B.over 1,000,000 C.about 50,000 D.over 500,000

2What does the underlined word “matter”in the second paragraph mean?

A.a serious problem B.a subject or a situation

C.be important and meaningful D.be relaxing

3Which of the following is mentioned as a reason for joining in spring break trips?

A.a personal opinion that people must help others

B.a wish to travel to interesting places

C.a wish to get away from family and friends

D.a hope to make more money

4What is the best title for the article?

    A.Different Activities for University Students

B.A Weeklong Party for Spring Break

    C.Different Kinds of Spring Break

D.Take Spring Break Trips to Florida

In some Western countries, lunch is eaten later, always after midday, sometimes at one o’clock. Dinner is served around 7 pm or even later. In Spain it’s usual to have lunch at 3 pm and dinner at 10 pm!

Chopsticks are used ______ people eat Chinese food. Knives and forks are used for most Western food. The fork is held in your left hand and the knife in your right, and the food is held with the fork and ______ with the knife. However, there is some food which can be eaten with your fingers, such as chicken legs, seafood, bread and cake.

If you’re invited to dinner by Western friends, you’ll know that you’re ______ to stay and talk around the dinner table long after the last dish is brought to the table, and it’s thought quite rude if you leave as soon as you finish eating.
