四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、On a rainy day, about 150 volunteers worked for eight hours to clean up Carson Creek that is near a river. About nine tons of trash was taken out from there.

“We did a good job,” said Alan Specter, the organizer of the event. “We’re planning to come back here one more time, three years from now. Of course, we hope that there won’t be so much trash next time.”

The trash came in all shapes, sizes, and colors: cans, bottles, bicycles, batteries, furniture, clothing, plastic bags, dolls, and even a golf bag with a full set of golf clubs (球棒).

The dirty and tiring work was done by two volunteering groups — Save the Bay and Watch the Whales. Most of the volunteers came from a local police station and a fire station. And some of them were old people who had already retired (退休).

That day, it rained a little. All of them wore boots, gloves and raincoats. They did the work along a two-mile river with over 500 big yellow trash bags everywhere.

No one found anything that cost much. A five-year-old boy found an earring which he thought might be worth a million dollars. He said he’d sell it. Then he’d donate half of the money to Watch the Whales, and use the other half to buy his favorite ice cream every day.

Shakespeare is to literature in English, so is the poet Du Fu to the Chinese literary tradition. Du Fu, known as the Sage of Poetry, lived and wrote in the eighth century, and his work is still available to modern Chinese readers. Du Fu, in fact, is still widely quoted (引用) in China today, and he has had a great influence on Chinese poetry in the past 1,200 years. However, the poet’s complete works weren’t unavailable in English translation in the past.

Conant University Professor Stephen Owen, who spent eight years on The Poetry of Du Fu, a 3,000-page translation published by De Gruyter, has completed the first English translation of the complete works of Du Fu.

Because Du Fu, like Shakespeare, is known for great width in subject, in the way he uses language to pass on different registers (不同场合用的语言和文体) (see Out with the Sake, In With the Wine”) and layered (多层次的) meanings he is one of the most challenging poets to translate. Chinese poetry, a literary tradition in which tenses are absent, pronouns rare, and the use of the singular and plural forms are hard to understand, is well known for seeming ambiguous (模糊不清的) at times. Within that tradition, the interpretation of Du Fu’s work is especially contested. Owen’s critical edition, in which his translations face the original texts, brings a scholarly aid for the first time to English-speaking readers ready to engage with China’s literary lion.

【1】Shakespeare is to literature in English, so is the poet Du Fu to the Chinese literary

    tradition.” means   ”.

    A. Du Fu has the same important literary status as Shakespeare in their own countries

    B. Du Fu is not as well-known as Shakespeare in China

    C. Du Fu is much more famous than Shakespeare in England

2The Poetry of Du Fu is translated into English by .

    A. Shakespeare B. Du Fu   C. Stephen Owen

3The underlined sentence is closer to the original Chinese version   .

    A. 零落栖迟一杯酒,主人奉觞客长寿

    B. 莫思身外无穷事,且尽生前有限杯

    C. 花间一壶酒,独酌无相亲

4Chinese poems are hard to translate because of the following factors EXCEPT   .

    A. the use of singular and plural forms

    B. too many characters

    C. tenses and pronouns

5According to the passage, the following statement   is TRUE.

    A. The Poetry of Du Fu is the first English translation of the complete works of Du Fu.

    B. There was no English translation of Du’s works in the past.

    C. Du’s works are out of style in China today.

  • 26、Are “Basics”Enough for Students?

An American education expert says many schools are spending too much time teaching the ―basics‖ reading, math and writing. That might be different from what educators have been saying in America. But U.S. Education Secretary John King says children really need a well-rounded(全面的)education that includes music and the arts.

King spoke about his own education when explaining why schools need to teach more than math, reading and writing. His parents died when he was young. He said things in his house were frightening. It was his teacher in Grades Four, Five and Six Mr. Osterweil who helped him escape from his difficult life at home. Each day in Mr. Osterweil’s class, students would read a newspaper. The teacher took him and his classmates to the theater, the zoos and famous museums.

“Those were powerful, life-changing experiences,‖ King says. After he graduated from Harvard University, he took charge of New York State public schools from 2011-2015. ―I’m alive today, I’m doing the work that I do today because I had Mr. Osterweil during that period of my life,‖ King says. ―Students need to connect their studies to things that matter to them, such as music, if they want to become a thinker.‖

A 2013 report by UNESCO(联合国教科文组织), says world needs people to be able to solve new and unusual problems now. It says arts can help students find those answers. In the report, UNESCO says teaching the arts in China, South Korea and Japan is different from that in many western countries. ―The educators in those three countries pay more attention on joyful experiences and children’s interests,‖ the report says. ―In the West, educators are more likely to connect the arts to reading, writing and math.”

Comparing countries is hard because they have different ways to define success. For example some people may think getting high marks in exams is success, while others may hold different views. A 2014 survey by the Program for International Student Assessment tried to compare how well countries teach children how to solve problems. It found Singapore, South Korea, Japan, and China with the highest scores. Singapore was the top one with a score of 562 out of 1,000. The average(平均的) score was 500. The United States had a score of 508, one point behind Germany.

So it may be worth rethinking what we should focus on in our class. The ―basics‖ is not the only part of education.

【1】 We can learn from the passage that __________.

    A. King’s family life was warm and happy

    B. King’s teacher focused on ―basics‖ more

    C. educators in the West teach music for joy

    D. arts can help students solvenew problems

【2】 The word “define” in Paragraph 6 probably means―_________”

    A. get the pleasure of B. make full use of

    C. give the meaning of D. take the place of

【3】 The writer probably agrees that______.

    A. students need more than “basics”to learn

    B. getting high marks in exams is success

C.education depends a lot on the hobbies

    D. we need more time to learn “basics”
