24、 Gever is a computer scientist from California. In 2005, he started a summer program for children called Tinkering School. The idea was that children can learn important skills for life by building things together. Gever and his team help the children to think big and create plans for new things they want to build. Children have made fantastic things since the school started. They have made a rope bridge, tree houses, wooden motorbikes and boats.
At Tinkering School, children get all kinds of materials like wood, metal, plastic, nails and ropes. They get lots of real tools too, such as knives, hammers(锤子) and power drills(电钻). Tinkering School has been around for many years now, but nobody has ever had a serious injury in all those years. This is because there are strict health and safety rules they must follow. The children always learn how to use the tools safely and they must wear the right clothing and protection at all times.
Gever’s ideas have worked very well. A lot of children have gone to his summer schools over the years. In 2011, Gever decided to create a ‘real’ school, called Brightworks, in San Francisco. The school is very small —it only has 20 students aged 6 to 13. Brightworks is based on the same principles(理念) as Tinkering School.
Since it started, Brightworks has been written about a lot. Most of those articles have been very positive(积极的). They have praised the quality of the school. They have found the children are more active than at many other schools. But there have also been critical (批评的) voices. Some people have said that children are not learning enough at Brightworks. They feel that students and teachers are just ‘playing around’ all the time.
The students at Brightworks seem to love their school. We spoke to 12-year-old Tina Cooper. She has been a student at the school since last October. “Since I started here. I’ve never sat in a ‘normal’ class with a teacher,” she told us. “But it’s been a very exciting experience. I’ve worked hard at my new school for eight months now, and there hasn’t been one single moment when I found it boring.”

A.A place you can walk around freely.
B.A space with new ideas and practice.
C.A factory full of materials and tools.
D.A family you will never leave behind.

Years ago, as we know, zoos kept animals in cages. Cages made it easy for visitors to see the animals, but a small cage is not a good place for an animal to live in.
Today animals live in open areas. There are usually plants and a little lake around, like the animals' habitats. Visitors usually stay in the bus to see the animals outside.
Zoos help to protect all kinds of animals. They protect animals in the zoo as well as animals in the wild. How do they do this? Zoos tell people how animals live in the wild and how to help protect their environment.
The number of many kinds of plants and animals is becoming smaller and smaller. Mammoths, which are related with Asia elephants, are now extinct(已灭绝的.Scientists say that 74 different kinds of living things are disappearing a day!

26、阅读下面四篇材料,然后从A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me. I was told it would mean a great deal to him, so I agreed.
During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He
had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症). When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me. When we had finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”
Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before:
Dear Dick,
My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more, but I still smile as much as I can. I told you someday that I would go to the Olympics and win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. However, I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.
Your friend,
Matthew

27、One after another, telecommunications giants such as Huawei, Samsung and Qualcomm have announced their latest fifth generation (5G) products with Huawei’s Mate X and Samsung’s Galaxy Fold attracting most eyeballs.
The telecom giants have also annouced that 5G technology would be widely used by 2020, causing some experts to say the “5G epoch” is coming. Yet, when reporting about 5G, many reporters have described it as a “much faster” technology than 4G without mentioning any of its other advantages. As a result, the common public idea about 5G is that they could “download a huge movie within one second”. Beyond that, most people know nothing about 5G.
Actually, 5G technology has many more advantages than 4G apart from speed. According to 3GPP, an international standardization organization, 5G technology can be used for at least three purposes-for connecting everything, reliability (可靠性) of connections, and removing delays.
“Connecting everything” is a proper slogan for 5G technology, without which the Internet of Things would be impossible. For example, self-driving cars contain several kinds of sensors, such as radar, computer vision, and GPS to identify driving routes, obstacles and road signs. 5G technology will link all the elements of a transportation system, such as traffic lights, CCTV cameras and, of course, cars to build up perfect coordination so they can avoid obstacles and move on driving routes, which will help strengthen self-driving technology.
Reliability of connections is another key characteristic of 5G technology, whose use can be spread to other fields where high safety standards are required. For example, in certain surgeries (外科手术), doctors put nano-robots inside a patient’s body and have to keep constant control over the robots to ensure they work well and do not cause any harm to the patient. This is an area where 5G technology can be of great help, as it can build up reliable and continuous connections between the monitor and the nano-robots.
And removing delays might come in handy especially in online games. Even long after 4G technology was introduced, players continued to complain about losing games because of low speed. This problem can be solved with 5G technology, because it will ensure continuous high speed.
And for those people who think that 5G costs will be very high, they need not worry. The cost problem can be solved in two ways.
First, factories can produce more micro base stations, which not only occupy less space but also cost less. And second, many more terminals (终端) can use a 5G base station compared with a 4G base station. The more terminals using a 5G base station, the lower cost each of them have to pay. Therefore, 5G technology won’t be as costly as you thought.
【1】How does 5G technology help improve self-driving technology?
A.It clears the obstacles for the cars.
B.It connects every part of a transport system.
C.It makes the self-driving car run much faster.
D.It controls the traffic lights and CCTV cameras.
【2】What is the use of 5G technology in certain surgeries?
A.It ensures high speed for the robots.
B.It helps the robots do the surgeries without doctors.
C.It enables doctors to put nano-robots inside a patient’s body.
D.It makes the connection between the monitor and the robots better.
【3】What does the underlined expression “come in handy” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Be fast.
B.Be useful.
C.Be special.
D.Be continuous.
【4】Factories can produce more micro base stations so that ________.
A.people can pay less for 5G
B.5G can be compared with 4G
C.the “5G epoch” can come sooner
D.more terminals can use a base station
【5】What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The “5G Epoch” is Coming
B.5G – Less Cost with Higher Speed
C.The Latest Fifth Generation Products
D.5G Technology Is More than about High Speed
