24、 The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work to support our family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂货), saving us from having to walk along long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.
【1】Why was the bike so important to the couple?
A.They used it for work and daily life. B.It was their only possession(财产).
C.It was a nice Kona 18 speed. D.The man's job was bike racing.
【2】How did people get to know the couple's problem?
A.From a stranger. B.From a newspaper.
C.From TV news. D.From radio broadcasts.
【3】What do the couple learn from their experience?
A.Strangers are usually of little help. B.One should take care of their bike.
C.News reports make people famous. D.An act of kindness can mean a lot.
25、Thousands of years ago. Britain was covered by thick forests, home to many animals which no longer live in the United Kingdom. There were wolves and bears, many different kinds of deer and large wild cows. There were less than four million people. They lived in small villages protected by wooden walls from the animals outside.
AU this has changed, of course. Now the population of the United Kingdom has increased to sixty-five million. Three quarters of Britain is covered with fields, towns or cities. Although 25 percent of land is countryside, new methods of farming mean that there are fewer birds and animals living in fields than ever before. The United Kingdom is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a large wild animal that eats meat. In Scotland there are only 400 wildcats, but these are much smaller than wolves.
Some people would like to change things, however! Some organizations and writers say that Britain needs to become more natural again. They suggest that trees and plants that grew in the UK before towns and cities were built should be allowed to grow again. They even say that large wild animals which have not lived in the UK should be helped to return and live wild. They call this “rewilding”.
Not everyone agrees. In the last twenty years, over one million trees which at first grew in Scotland have been planted and there are plants for morebut wild animals? Some people ask if wolves will attack(攻击)sheep or even humans. They are also angry that rewilding might mean an end to walking in the hills which so many people enjoy. So far there are no wolves or bears in Britain's forests—but soon there might be!
【1】What was the population of the UK thousands of years ago?
A.About 25 million.
B.Over 65 million.
C.More than 61 million
D.Not more than four million.
【2】Why are there fewer birds and small animals in fields in the UK?
A.Because more trees have been planted.
B.Because there are more large wild animals.
C.Because pollution is much worse than before.
D.Because people use new methods of farming.
【3】Which paragraph gives opinions from “rewilding” supporters?
A.Paragraph 1
B.Paragraph 2
C.Paragraph 3
D.Paragraph 4
【4】What are some people against?
A.Living closer to nature.

C.Helping large wild animals return.
D.Building more villages and towns.
【5】What’s the best title for the text?
A.Making Britain wild again
B.A trip to wild Britain

26、I came out of my room this morning and found Mom and Dad standing in front of the TV. On the screen, Tony Verrazo, the weatherman said, “Calvin has turned west and is headed for land.”
I didn’t understand what was happening, but suddenly Mom and Dad started rushing around.
“You pick up coconuts, Jason.” Dad said.
“Coconuts?” I was confused. We had coconut trees in the yard, but why pick up coconuts now?
I wanted to ask, but Dad had no time for me.
I had no idea what was going on but I wanted to see Calvin, and I went to the beach. It was empty except for two men. One had a camera and the other was talking into a microphone. I recognized him—Tony Verrazo!
“Hi, kid. What’s up?” said Tony, smiling
“Oh, I’m taking a break from picking up coconuts,” I lied.
“Coconuts,” he said thoughtfully. “I forgot all about them. Stand over here and tell the camera who you are and what you’re doing.”
“Hi,” I took the microphone. “I’m Jason and I’m picking up coconuts because Calvin is coming.”
“Thanks, kid.” Tony said, “You’d better head home and finish your job!”
I had to do the silly job because Tony made me tell everyone what I was doing.
After hours of working in the yard, I filled up all the bags I could find. When I got inside, history was repeating itself. Mom and Dad were standing in front of the TV, and Tony was talking.
“Hurricane-force (飓风级的) winds can make flying coconuts really dangerous! Don’t forget to pick them up! And we want to give credit to (表扬) the person who came up with the idea,” he said.
There on TV, I was holding the microphone, saying, “Hi, I’m Jason, and I’m picking up coconuts.”
All day, I thought I had to pick up coconuts just because I was little and had to stay out of everybody’s way. Now I realized what Calvin really was and that what I had done actually mattered.
