21、John Perry stood up and looked around again. The island had been a good place to find shells. But now how could he make the sharks move out to sea ...? If they swam out to sea he could jump in and get to shore before they saw him. He saw the sharks rolling and playing. Their hunger was now gone and they were killing for fun. How could he make them move away?
He drew his knife from his belt. Sharks can smell blood, he thought. He put the knife against his leg and cut deep into it. The blood ran out and he caught it on his white shirt. When the shirt was red and wet he tied some cloth around his leg to stop the flow of blood. He then tied a long piece of cloth to the shirt, threw it into the water and pulled it with the piece of cloth.
The sharks smelled the blood and came racing toward the shirt. He ran down the sand reef pulling the shirt and the sharks raced after it. He was leading them away from shore. Suddenly he dropped the cloth, turned toward the shore and ran as fast as he could. He jumped in the water and swam.
He was halfway across when he turned to look back. A high bony fin(鳍) was cutting through the water toward him. He put his face in the water and swam as fast as he could. The shore was near now.
He lifted his head again to breathe and he saw the shore very near. And then a great gray body hit him and almost rolled him over in the water. He touched the shore with fingers and he pulled himself up the stones. The shark, by the smell of blood and the chase(追逐), went wildly after him. Its great body crashed against the stones.
The end came quickly and the water was covered with the shark’s blood. The injured shark was eaten by others as it tried to escape.
“So,” he said, “you did not get me.” He climbed up the stones and walked toward the village.

23、Most people think martial arts (武术) are all about kicking, punching (用拳打) and fighting. But tai chi is the other way around. It is slow, calm and peaceful.
UNESCO recently added tai chi to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录). Tai chi is an ancient martial art, but it is still quite popular today. It has over 100 million fans in more than 150 countries.
People do tai chi as a way to stay fit. Unlike other exercises, it is “soft”—the muscles are not tensed (紧的), the joints are not fully bent (弯曲的), and you don’t need to stretch too much. This means many people can do it. You can practise it almost anytime and anywhere, as no equipment is needed. During slow movements of tai chi, we can focus on our hands and feet. It is believed that practising tai chi can help us have better control of our bodies so that we can stand, walk, and run better. Slow movements also allow us to take deep, long breaths. This is good for our bodies.
But the benefits (好处) of tai chi go beyond the physical. Marleni, a Peruvian woman who has practised tai chi for more than 10 years, says it’s not only a sport, but also a way of life. Tai chi has taught her the value of living more slowly. Life and work used to stress her out. But she began to feel a change thanks to tai chi, which helped her “get inner peace”. She said, “For me now, practicing tai chi is like speaking with my soul (灵魂).”
