二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Ive just got to talk about this problem I’m having with my postman. It all began a year ago, after the birth of his first child. Not wanting to appear rude, I asked him about the baby. The next week, not wanting him to think I had asked out of mere politeness the week before, I asked all about the baby again. Now I cant break the habit. I freeze whenever I see him coming. The words Hows the baby? come out on their own. It holds me up. It holds him up. So why cant I stop it? The answer is that I want him to like me. Come to think of it, I want everyone to like me.

My sister had the same problem with the caretaker of her block of flats: All he ever does is complain; he talks at me rather than to me, never listens to a word I say, and yet for some reason I’m always really nice to him. I’m worried in case I have a difficulty one day, and he wont lift a finger to help.

What about at work? Richard Lawton, a management trainer, warns: Those managers who are actually liked by most of their staff are always those to whom being liked is not the primary goal. The qualities that make managers popular are being honest with staff, treating them as human beings and observing common politeness like saying hello in the morning. To explain the point, Richard mentions the story of the company chairman who desperately wanted to be liked and who, after making one of his managers fired, said with moist (湿润的) eyes that he was so, so sorry the man was leaving. The employee replied: If you were that sorry, I wouldnt be leaving. The lesson being, therefore, that if you try too hard to be liked, people wont like you.

The experts say it all starts in childhood. If children feel they can only get love from their parents by being good, says Zelda West-Meads, a marriage guidance consultant, they develop low self-confidence and become compulsive givers. But is there anything wrong in being a giver, the world not being exactly short of takers? Anne Cousins believes there is. There is a point at which giving becomes unhealthy, she says. It comes when you do things for others but feel bad about it.

I am now trying hard to say to people I feel uncomfortable about saying this, but…” and tell myself Refusal of a request does not mean rejection of a person and I find I can say almost anything to almost anyone.

【1】Why does the author ask the postman about his baby?

A.He is interested in the baby.

B.He wants to create a good impression.

C.He wants to be always polite to him.

D.Its a way to start a chat with great politeness.

2What could we find out about the authors sister and the caretaker?

A.She doesnt want to risk displeasing him.

B.She doesnt pay attention to him.

C.He often refuses to help her.

D.He is impatient of her overreaction.

3Managers are more likely to be popular if they ______.

A.help the staff with their problems

B.make sure the staff do not lose their jobs

C.encourage the staff to be polite to each other

D.do not make too much effort to be liked

4The underlined words, compulsive givers, in the fourth paragraph refer to the people who ______.

    A.are willing to help others

B.couldnt bear to turn down requests

    C.are unconfident of denying demands

    D.are less selfish than takers

5What is the authors intention of writing this passage?

A.To show how to let others like you more.

B.To prove how to create a harmonious atmosphere.

C.To encourage people to have more self-confidence.

D.To suggest ways of dealing with difficult people.

  • 22、Exhausted and unhappy, you still have to squeeze a smile to your friends, or teachers. That’s just life, you may think. But new research suggests that putting on a fake smile can worsen people’s mood and even lower work efficiency.

Lead researcher Brent Scott with other researchers studied a group of bus drivers for two weeks. They tried to find out what happened when the drivers were involved in “surface acting” or fake smiling, and the opposite, “deep acting” which means people put on real smiles by recalling pleasant memories or thinking about their current situation more positively.

The results showed that on days when drivers were forced to smile, they felt depressed and didn’t want to work. On days when they smiled due to positive thoughts, their mood improved a lot as well as their work efficiency.

The research goes against the popular belief among companies that employees should be cheerful to customers at all times. They include employees of shops, banks, call center workers and others who have face-to-face contact with members of the public. “Smiling for the sake of(为了) smiling can lead to emotional exhaustion and coldness, and that’s bad for the organization,” Scott told the Daily Mail.

The study also showed that women were harmed more by fake smiling than men. Their mood and work performance both worsened more. But they were helped more by deep acting their mood became better and they worked more efficiently.

However, while deep acting seemed to improve mood in the short term, Scott says it’s not a long-term solution for unhappiness.

“There have been some suggestions that if you do this over a long period that you start to feel inauthentic(不真实的),” Scott said. “You may be trying to cultivate positive emotions, but at the end of the day you may not feel like yourself anymore.”

【1】Brent Scott and others’ experiments on bus drivers suggest that ______.

    A. depression among bus drivers is common

    B. thinking in a positive way helps with work efficiency

    C. bus drivers with pleasant memories tend to be less efficient

    D. the bus drivers’ work efficiency is determined by their mood

【2According to the article, which of the following statements about “fake smiling” is TRUE?

    A. It is good for the business but bad for the employees.

    B. It doesn’t work on people who are emotionally expressive.

    C. It is a widely accepted cultural practice in the US.

    D. It causes more harm to women than men.

【3】We can conclude from the article that the researchers think that ______.

    A. people should be true to their feelings

    B. smiling helps to put people in a good mood and become more efficient

    C. it is unnecessary to cultivate positive emotions

    D. deep acting can improve mood in the long run

【4】The article is mainly about ______.

    A. the importance of smiling during face-to-face contact

    B. a new study on fake smiling and its influence on people

    C. suggestions on improving work efficiency

    D. how to cheer up when you are exhausted

  • 23、“Eat local.” It’s one way to reduce human effect on the planet.Eating local means to try to buy and consume foods that are grown in places close to home. However, most of the food sold at supermarkets is not locally grown or produced.Trucks and planes deliver these foods from hundreds or thousands of miles away.During the transportation, greenhouse gases are produced, causing global warming. So the shorter the distance your foods must travel, the less the harm is done to the environment.

But how do you get local food if you live in a large city, hundreds of miles away from farms?Environmental health scientist Dickson Despommier and his students came up with the idea of a “vertical farm”.

A vertical farm is a glass-walled structure that could be built as tall as a skyscraper.Since the garden is built upwards, rather than outwards, it requires much less space than an ordinary farm. The world is quickly running out of room for ordinary farming.Vertical farms could be a key to this situation.Despommier imagines a 30-story building with a greenhouse on every floor. The walls of the building would be clear, to allow crops to get as much sunlight as possible.Depending on a city’s water resources, Despommier thinks hydroponic(水培) farming is another method for the vertical farm which needs no soil to grow plants.

Despommier says the hydroponic greenhouses would use a system that would use a city’s waste water and fill it with nutrition to make the crops grow.If this method works, it would provide food to a city and save millions of tons of water.

The idea of a vertical farm has attracted the attention of government officials around the world.Scott Stringer, a government official from New York City, thinks the city is suitable for the vertical farming.“Obviously we don’t have much land left for us,” Stringer said, “But the sky is the limit in Manhattan.”

Despommier admits that there is still a lot of work to do to make vertical farms a reality.“But I think vertical farming is an idea that can work in a big way.” he says.

【1】Why are people advised to eat local?

A.Because it means convenience to people.

B.Because it can help people save a lot of money.

C.Because local food has more nutrition.

    D.Because it is environmentally friendly.

【2】Which is one of the vertical farm’s benefits when compared with ordinary farming?

    A.It produces healthier food.

B.It does less harm to the cities.

C.It consumes more energy of the city.

    D.It requires less transport costs.

【3】By saying “the sky is the limit in Manhattan”, Stringer means ________.

A.people can make full use of vertical space of Manhattan

B.there is a limit for using empty land in Manhattan

C.the height of buildings in Manhattan is limited

D.Manhattan has a great potential for development

【4】What can we learn about the vertical farming in the passage?

A.In a vertical farm, soil may not be needed to grow plants.

B.It has solved the problem of the food shortage in a big way.

C.It is a 30-story building with a greenhouse on every floor.

D.Crops are mainly grown in the rainwater in a vertical farm.

  • 24、The $10bn James Webb telescope has left Earth on its mission to show the first stars to light up the Universe. The observatory was lifted skyward by an Ariane rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana. Its flight to orbit was expected to last just under half an hour, with a signal confirming a successful outcome due to be picked up in Kenya.

Webb, named after one of the architects of the Apollo Moon landings, is the successor to the Hubble telescope.

Lift-off was eagerly awaited but accompanied also by a good deal of anxiety. Thousands of people worldwide have worked on the project over the past 30 years, and even though the Ariane is a very dependable vehicle—there are no guarantees when it comes to rockets.

“Webb is an extraordinary mission,” US space agency administrator Bill Nelson said before, lift-off. “It’s a shining example of what we can accomplish when we dream big. We’ve always known that this project would be a risky endeavor (effort). But, of course, when you want big reward, you have to usually take a big risk.” At the core of the new facility’s capabilities is its 6.5m-wide golden mirror. This is almost three times wider than the primary reflector on Hubble.

The enlarged reflector, combined with four super-sensitive instruments, should enable astronomers to look deeper into space — and thus further back in time — than ever before. A key target will be the age of the pioneer stars that ended the darkness, theorized to have gripped (controlled) the universe shortly after the Big Ban more than 13.5 billion years ago. Another important goal for Webb will be to probe atmospheres of distant planets. This will help researchers judge whether these worlds are in any way habitable.

Webb’s launch is only the start of what will be a complex series of initial activities over the next six months. The telescope is being put on a path to an observing station some 1.5 million km beyond the Earth. In the course of travelling to this location, Webb will have to unpack itself from the folded configuration it adopted at launch.

“And then the critical thing is that it all has to get very cold,” explained Mark Mark McCaughrean, senior science adviser with the European Space Agency. This telescope actually will be at minus 233 degrees Celsius. Only then will it stop glowing at the infrared wavelengths beyond the visible where we want this telescope to work. And only then will it be able to take the sensitive pictures of the distant universe where the first galaxies were born, and of planets going around other stars. So there’s a long way to go.” (From BBC, Dec 25, 2021)

【1】Why were scientists worried when Webb was launched into space?

A.Because it is very expensive and delicate.

B.Because a lot of efforts have been devoted to it.

C.Because something unpredictable may happen to the rocket.

D.Because its signal may not be picked up in Kenya.

【2】Compared to the Hubble telescope, Webb owns the following characteristics except ________

A.It is more powerful and advanced.

B.It has a larger reflector and more sensitive equipment.

C.It will theorize the darkness after the Big Bang.

D.It will help scientists see further in distance and time.

【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.It will take six months for Webb to function smoothly.

B.Webb will be put at a higher position in space than Hubble.

C.Webb will fold itself once launched into space.

D.Certain circumstances will be needed for Webb to operate.

【4】What’s the best title for this passage?

A.James Webb Space Telescope lifts off on historic mission.

B.Hubble Telescope is to retire from space soon.

C.A risky but rewarding endeavor is to be made by humans.

D.Humans are to explore the origin of the universe.

  • 25、Today, we’re going to discuss a charming children’s classic from 1976: The Missing Piece by Shel Silverstein. Silverstein was an American writer, cartoonist and poet _______ for this children’s story, which has been translated into more than 30 languages.

Like many of Silverstein’s works, The Missing Piece is both _______ and rich with meaning. The main _______ of the story is a circular shape that gets around by rolling. It’s not a full circle, _______, as it’s missing a wedge-shaped (楔形的,V形的) piece of itself. It feels _______, and longs to find that missing piece of itself.

The shape goes on a(n) _______ to find that perfect wedge. It sings as it goes, has conversations along the way, and _______ the lovely scenery it passes. It meets a number of _______ wedges, but none of them are quite right. But finally, it _______ the perfect wedge. Now, the shape is a perfect circle. At first, of course, this is a ________ moment. Being totally round, the shape can roll ________ than it’s ever rolled before. Soon, though, the ________ of this becomes apparent. It can no longer sing clearly, it’s too difficult to stop for a nice ________, or it cannot roll slowly enough to take in the scenery. Being complete, it ________, is not such a great thing. The shape decides to place the wedge on the ground, and roll slowly away.

What can we learn from the story? To me, the ________ is that we feel more ________ when we’re incomplete. Everyone wants to find what is missing from themselves, but actually, the journey is more fulfilling than the ________. Rather than attempt to become perfect and whole, we should learn to cherish our ________ selves, with all of our wonderful imperfections. Not only is this a great lesson for children, but for ________ everywhere as well. It’s little wonder that The Missing Piece has remained a ________ for over 40 years.
