  • 22、A study by a team of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) psychologists has found a link between extraverts (外向的人) and their word choices. The finding highlights the need for stronger linguistic indicators to be developed for use in online personality prediction tools, which are being rapidly adopted by companies to improve digital marketing strategies.

Today, marketing companies use predictive algorithms (算法) to help them forecast what consumers want based on their online behaviors. For example, an extravert consumer might be attracted to marketing messages that match their personality, and retail brands could then choose to target such consumers by using more extraverted and creative language to advertise their products. However, personality prediction tools available today that are used by marketing firms are not entirely accurate due to a lack of theoretically sound designs. This may lead to a weakness affecting the performance of the machine learning algorithms. This begs the question—how should we create robust and accurate personality predictions?

The study found a correlation between extraverts and their tendency to use certain categories of words. The results showed a small strength of relationship between extraversion and the use of “positive emotion words” and “social process words.”

Positive emotion words are defined as words that describe a pleasant emotional state, such as “love”, ”happy”, or “blessed”, or that indicate positivity or optimism, such as “beautiful” or “nice”. Social process words include words containing personal pronouns except “I”, and words showing social intentions, such as “meet”, “share” and “talk”.

Moving forward, the NTU research team will investigate the relationship between extraversion and other word categories. They hope their work will provide clarity on the types of words that can help guide the development of more accurate machine learning tools for personality prediction.

【1】We learn from the passage the findings of the study can be used to help ______.

    A.observe consumers’ behavior

    B.forecast the need of companies

    C.create practical personality predictions

D.find correlation between extraverts and ads

【2】What does the underlined word “robust” mean in Paragraph 2?

    D.Variable.

【3】Which of the following words may belong to extraverts’ commonly used vocabulary?

    A.Dispute.

    B.Interaction.

    C.Disaster.

    D.Loneliness.

【4】What does the last paragraph focus on?

    A.The direction of future research.

B.The theoretical basis of the study.

    C.The strength of business strategies.

D.The development of machine learning tools.

  • 23、A few years ago, a doctor gave a wrong prescription to a 9-year-old boy because he had accidentally clicked the next medicine listed in the drop-down menu. Unfortunately, the boy died.

Dr. Gidi Stein heard the story and felt forced to do something. “It was like killing someone with a spelling error. He just clicked on the wrong button…Stein said. “One would have thought there’d be some kind of spell-checker to prevent these terrible things from happening. But apparently this is not the case.”

Several things were immediately obvious to the 54-year-old Stein, who had previously studied computer science. “If you look at this problem from a bird’s eye view, there were so many places down the line where this decision could have been stopped-from the physician to the pharmacy (药房) even to the mother. All of them had all the relevant information to have the judgment that this was just the wrong drug for the wrong patient. For Stein, it represented a systematic failure.

Stein compared this with credit cards. “If you use your credit card in the daily routine over time, a pattern emerges of how we use our cards : the grocery store, the gas station in our local town. If your credit card would appear tomorrow in Zimbabwe, it would be unusual. The credit card company would call you and say, “‘Hey, was that you?’”

But nothing like that existed in the field of prescription drugs. So Stein set up a company called MedAware. He came up with a machine learning outliner detection system. In other words, he trained the computers to realize if a doctor accidentally prescribed the wrong medicine.

The system is already used in hospitals and doctor5 s offices. To date, MedAware has used their technology to help nearly six million patients in the United States and Israel.

    【1】What caused the boy’s death?

    A.The doctor’s carelessness.

    B.The doctor’s poor medical skill.

    C.The failure of the computer.

    D.The incomplete health care system.

【2】How did Dr. Gidi Stein react to the boy’s death?

A.He was annoyed and put the blame on the doctor only.

B.He was regretful and tried to prevent similar accidents happening.

C.He was embarrassed and mistook it as a systematic failure.

D.He was confused and detected the mistakes in prescriptions himself.

【3】What does Stein want to tell us by mentioning credit cards?

A.Credit cards are available for doctors’ prescriptions.

B.Instructions in using credit cards are offered to users.

C.The boy might have been saved with the technology like credit cards.

D.MedAware’s technology will benefit the patients in Zimbabwe.

【4】It can be concluded from the text that ________.

A.MedAware’s technology helps doctors choose right medicine

B.MedAware’s technology checks the prescriptions doctors make out

C.Medical industry worldwide has enjoyed MedAware’s technology

D.The boy? s mother was not to blame for his death during the accident

  • 24、Ereading and ebooks are slowly conquering the world.Compared to traditional paper books, ebooks in some schools and universities attract more interest because the information flow seems much easier to manage and comes in a greatly higher quantity.

Japan is known for the reformminded attitude towards the gadget(精巧装置) world and for the fact that it is one of the first countries that encouraged in the educational system the emailing of homework.

The digital textbook looks like the logical step in the world of learning. It is natural but it is also completely untraditional.

The plan of the largest publishing companies to get in line with the trend is to save a large quantity of paper and make the kids become interested in learning using a cool gadget. Many USA universities and colleges have made students be used to the procedure of downloading the courses and of course the procedure involves interactive software and also the chance of using the computer.

The traditional education system is still unwilling when it comes to giving up books. The standard approach of information taught out of a book and Shakespeare read out of an old school novel makes studying English as traditional as it can be.

In a world where kids would rather see the movie than read a book, the digital age has brought along a completely different flavor to reading.Bringing that flavor in school will make teaching a greener and also a completely different matter.

【1】Why are ebooks so popular in the world?

    A.It's cheap to buy.

    B.It's effective to use.

    C.It's convenient to bring.

    D.It's the latest fashion.

【2】Which of the following words can best take the place of the word “reformminded” in the second paragraph?

    A.Oldfashioned.  B.Aggressive.

    C.Rejecting.   D.Progressive.

【3】In America, the students are encouraged to________.

A.apply the procedure of downloading the courses

B.communicate with their teachers using computer

C.research some interactive software for their studies

D.do their homework in computer instead of in paper

【4】What's the author's attitude to the digital textbooks?

    A.Being against. B.Being for.

    C.Not mentioned. D.Being neutral.

The Nunes’s family lived in a friendly community near the woods. It was a normal Wednesday afternoon Mom Araceli Nunes returned home from selling food and drinks along the roadside in Plantersville, Texas. Her business had been fairly profitable and she was happy to see her husband preparing dinner in the kitchen and her 3-year-old son, Christopher Ramirez, playing in the yard. However, when she turned to unload her car, she didn’t notice the kid followed a neighbor’s dog into the woods.

When they couldn’t find Christopher, the panicky family called for help, and within a few hours, 48 different agencies arrived to comb through the area around their home. Their entire community started to help find Christopher. Some walked into the forest and others drove farther away.

After days with no sign of the kid, rescuers feared the worst, but Araceli never stopped hoping for her son’s safe return. At long last, after four long days and nights, the sheriff received a phone call from a man named Tim Halfin.

Tim Halfin’s house was about three miles away. He had heard of the missing boy when he returned home from a business trip. He didn't think a three-year-old could walk that far to where he lived. However, as all the previous searching efforts were in vain, he decided to try his luck around his own house.

Not long after he went out into the woods, he was surprised by what came into his sight. There was Christopher! Aside from being dehydrated and very hungry, the kid was completely unharmed. He was found outside the range where authorities were looking for him, so it’s pretty amazing that Tim discovered him.
