二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Every day, on British radio stations and on television, you can hear it. It gives the time before BBC radio news programmes, and on the BBC World Service. And you can hear it and see it every evening before ITV's "News at Ten". 1

If you have been to London, you have certainly seen "Big Ben". It's very difficult to miss, standing almost 100 metres high beside the Thames, next to the Houses of Parliament. 2 But in reality, "Big Ben" is just the name of the biggest bell in the tower. The famous clock tower was built in the 1850s, after the Houses of Parliament were burned down.

The new clock was to be the biggest in the world, and extremely accurate. Lots of people thought that this would be impossible; a very big clock, they thought, could not be very accurate. 3 And the clock has always kept time almost perfectly.

The original "Big Ben" bell weighed 16 tons, and was made in the North of England. However, after it had reached London, but before it had been put in place, it cracked! So the original bell was therefore melted down (in London) and a new Big Ben was made and put in place in July 1859... but after two months it cracked.4A smaller hammer was put in place, and Big Ben began chiming (报时)again in 1862.

Since then, there have been several incidents. 5 And in 1976, the clock stopped for 26 days, when a part of the mechanism broke…after 114 years of service! Recently, engineers have decided that the tower and the clock were both in need of urgent repairs. Work began in 2017, and unless there are some unexpected problems, Big Ben will begin a new life in the year 2021.

    A.In fact, they were wrong.

B.The Big Ben has a long history.

C.Experts decided that the hammer was too big.

D.Once the clock stopped when a pot of paint got stuck between its hands!

E.The name "Big Ben" is generally used to refer to the big clock tower itself.

F.Almost all the tourists visiting London prefer to take many photos of Big Ben.

G.The chimes of Big Ben are recognized by almost everyone in Britain, and by millions of people all over the world.

  • 23、Two 18-year-old girls, Jrasnatt and Marisa, learned about a major challenge faced by the cricket (蟋蟀) farmers. Bigger crickets often attack the smaller ones. When attacked, a cricket will cut off its own legs to escape. But after abandoning a leg, this animal will often die or becomes less valuable to buyers.

Jrasnatt and Marisa were determined to solve the problem. After some research, they learned that colored light can influence the behaviors of some animals, including insects. To find out, the teen researchers transferred groups of 30 newly hatched crickets into each of 24 boxes. The crickets in six boxes were exposed only to red light. Another six boxes were lit with green. Six more boxes were lit with blue. These three groups of insects spent daytime hours throughout their lives — about two months — in a world bathed in just one color of light. The last six boxes of crickets lived in natural light.

“We see they’re growing every day and take notes on what’s happening,” says Marisa. “We’re like the parents of the crickets.” Throughout, the teens kept track of the crickets. The share of crickets with missing legs was about 9 in every 10 among those living in red, blue or natural light. But fewer than 7 in every 10 crickets who grew up in a world of green lost legs. Also, the survival rate for crickets in the green box was four or five times higher than that in the other boxes.

Crickets’ eyes are adapted to only see in green and blue light. So, in red light, the world would always look dark. Without being able to see, they are more likely to hit each other. That results in crickets losing legs. Besides, crickets are more attracted to blue light than green light, which pulls them closer together and leads to more fights. In the green light box, the crickets were most likely to mind their own business and avoid struggle.

Creating a green-light world for crickets is a solution that could be brought to the farms. Jrasnatt and Marisa are already in talks with the farmers. Those farmers plan to try out green lighting to see if it will boost their profits.

【1】What problem of crickets did the girls decide to settle?

    A.There is no cricket buyer.

B.They often jump high to escape.

C.Their legs are cut off by farmers.

D.There are always injuries and deaths.

    A.They conducted the research seriously.

B.They looked after the insects carelessly.

C.They observed the crickets day and night.

D.They divided the crickets into three groups.

【3】What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.Possible application of the research finding.

B.A brief introduction to the research method.

C.A further explanation for the research results.

D.Detailed information about the research process.

【4】What may be the attitude of the cricket farmers towards the girls’ solution?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Opposed.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 24、   Recently I got goose bumps (鸡皮疙瘩).It was Friday. I went to school like it was a normal day, but little did I know there was a shock waiting for me at school

There was a boy in my band, Spanish and math class. His name was Nathan. I never really liked him since he was a slowpoke (动作迟缓的人). In class whenever he was asked a question, he would take a long time to answer it. The whole class would get annoyed. He didn't have any friends at all. He always sat alone at the lunch table listening to music.

That day, I walked into the band class and Mr. Kohler began the class. We played music for a little while and then Mr. Kohler asked us: “Who in here can tell what note it is just by hearing the pitch (音高)?" Nobody raised their hand except Nathan. The moment I saw him, I laughed but not out loud. I thought he couldn't do anything properly. How could he possibly guess the note when the pitch was played?

Mr. Kohler asked Nathan to stand in front of the class. Then he has a tuner, played a pitch and asked Nathan to guess the note.

    Nathan said, “E flat."

Me Kohler said, “OK, good. And he played another pitch. "F sharp," Nathan said. The whole class went silent.

Mr. Kohler challenged Nathan by playing 2 pitches and even 3 pitches at the same time. Nathan guessed all the pitches correctly.

'Good job. Go back to your seat,"  Me Kohler said.

At that moment I got goose bumps. That day I realized that I shouldn't judge people based on little things I see. I need to see the great things people can do. From that day on I had a different opinion on Nathan. I forgot all the things he was bad at and focused on the things he was good at.

1What can we know about Nathan?

    A.He performed well academically.

B.He lived with a physical disability.

C.He didn't like Spanish or math class.

D.He didn't get along with his classmates.

2What might the author be thinking when Nathan raised his hand?

    A.Nathan showed great courage.

    B.Nathan was musically talented.

C.Nathan played a joke on Mr. Kohler.

D.Nathan had too high an opinion of himself.

3Why did Mr. Kohler play 2 and even 3 pitches all at once?

    A.To show off his skills.

    B.To test Nathan's ability.

    C.To tune up the instrument.

D.To teach his students the skills.

4What can we learn from the story?

    A.Music is a universal language.

    B.Everyone does shine in something.

C.All things come to those who wait.

D.Confident people tend to achieve success.
