二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Since the early to mid-2010s, social media apps have made a permanent home in many people’s phones, and spending time on social media has become as much of a daily activity as drinking water. Since so many people are on it for much of their days—especially kids, teens, and young adults—there is increased concern over what social media is doing to people.

Many argue that social media is an unhealthy way to pass the time, and that false information from online is causing confusion and panic. This type of thing happens with every generation when something new that people don’t understand comes along: So many people thought rock-and-roll was making teens morally bad, which really wasn’t the case. It is fair to say that the teenage years are hard, and that teens need an escape. Back before phones, teens would listen to rock music as a form of escapism, or they would watch TV, go to the movies, skate around, or dress up in crazy clothes. Unfortunately, all of those things at one point in time were blamed for being a bad influence on young people. Social media is the new rock-and-roll: it’s a new thing, and people demonize(妖魔化)change.

For example, many believe that everything on social media apps is filtered(加滤镜)and that seeing perfect people and their perfectly edited lives often leads to lots of negative emotions. However, models, magazines. and movies have been using retouching(修整)tools for photos and media since Photoshop and other post-production services were invented. Social media has made it easier to see more edited pictures, but social media itself isn’t making people want to look a certain way. People should acknowledge that these pictures aren’t authentic, and the posts are made to look good on purpose. Social media is not to blame for body confidence issues when the things people want to look like aren’t even real in the first place.

It seems like most issues around social media are user errors, like anyone complaining there are too many people being addicted to social media. However, not everyone is addicted to social media; people who have any grasp on reality wouldn’t spend every waking second on the phone. It is really up to the individual how they use social media. Keeping up with the flood of posts, stories, and photos takes a lot of time—many young people admit that they spend hours on their phones every day. Yet, this seems like an easy problem to solve when the solution is simply clicking off the phone a couple hours early. Therefore, it is clear that moderation(适度)is the key to dealing with all the issues around social media.

  • 22、Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth. Coral reefs support more species per unit area than any other marine (海洋的) environment, including about 4,000 species of fish, 800 species of hard corals and hundreds of other species. Scientists estimate that there may be millions of undiscovered species living in and around reefs. This biodiversity is considered the key to finding new medicines for the 21st century. Many drugs are now being developed from coral reef animals and plants as possible cures for cancer, viruses, and other diseases.

Healthy coral reefs (珊瑚礁) support fisheries as well as jobs and businesses through tourism and recreation. About half of all managed fisheries depend on coral reefs and related habitats for a part of their life cycles. The National Marine Fisheries Service estimates the commercial value of U. S. fisheries from coral reefs is over $ 100 million. Local economies receive billions of dollars from visitors to reefs through diving tours, recreational fishing trips, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses based near reef ecosystems.

Coral reef structures also buffer shorelines against 97 percent of the energy from waves, storms, and floods, helping to prevent loss of life, and property damage. When reefs are damaged or destroyed, the absence of this natural barrier can increase the damage to coastal communities from normal wave action and violent storms. Several million people live in U. S. coastal areas near coral reefs. Some coastal development is required to provide necessary infrastructure (基础设施) for coastal residents and the growing coastal tourism industry.

Despite their great economic and recreational value, coral reefs are severely threatened by pollution, disease, and habitat destruction. Once coral reefs are damaged, they are less able to support the many creatures that live on them and the communities near them. When a coral reef supports fewer fish, plants, and animals, it also loses value as a tourist destination.

【1】Why is biodiversity important to medicines?

A.It can reduce the prices of new medicines.

B.It can help make new medicines.

C.It can be used for medicines.

D.It can be used to cure diseases.

【2】What does the underlined word “buffer” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.restore.

    B.clean.

    C.beautify.

    D.weaken.

【3】What will happen if coral reefs are damaged?

    A.Most fish will die out.

B.Coastal cities will attract fewer tourists.

C.There will be no large fish.

    D.The sea will be polluted.

【4】Why does the author write this article?

A.To introduce the environments of infrastructure.

B.To encourage readers to support marine environment.

C.To show the importance of coral reefs .

D.To stress the value of biodiversity.

  • 23、During the spring break, my daughter, Lucy, was offered the opportunity to go to Thailand with Adventures Cross-Country (ARCC) on a summer adventure that combined community service with some unique, amazing actually, travel opportunities.

Less than 24 hours after landing in, they squeezed in their first service project, teaching and volunteering in a local school, before hopping on a night train to Chiang Mai. From there they boarded open-air bus-like trucks and bumped their way along rough dirt roads for a couple of hours, leaving their comfort zones behind before reaching the Village Hill Tribe.

Surrounded by rice fields, the teenagers taught English and poured the cement floor of a library in the making. Their home away from home was a village classroom. Tables and chairs were pushed aside to clear floor space for the kids to sleep at night. There were bugs of the flying and crawling variety. There were no flush (冲水) toilets. Showers were accomplished by filling a bucket with a plastic pipe and hanging it over your head. When my home phone rang about a week after she left, there were no complaints but the shower, in her words, “was the best thing that ever happened to me.” There aren’t many folks, let alone teenagers, that can rough it in those conditions, do community service work that involves hard labor, and most impressively, still be smiling at the end of the day.

Experiences like this can’t be gained by reading books or searching the Internet. They’ve learned by traveling and doing. She learned how to lay a cement floor without the luxury of any fancy equipment. All of the teenagers learned that people, themselves included, can do great things when they put their minds to it.

【1】How was Lucy’s journey to the Village Hill Tribe?

    A.Lonely.

    B.Dangerous.

    C.Uncomfortable.

    A.On the classroom floor.

    B.In a newly-built library.

    C.On tables put together.

    D.Next to the shower room.

【3】How does the author feel about Lucy’s experiences?

    A.They are terribly bad

    B.They are quite beneficial

    C.They are hardly imagined

    D.They can be unbearable

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.An unforgettable traveling experience.

B.A mother, who is proud of her daughter.

C.A girl, who is persistent and determined.

D.A volunteer experience in a Thai school.

  • 24、   I've come back to check on a baby. Just after dusk I'm in a car down a muddy road in the rain, past rows of shackled (戴镣的) elephants, their trunks swinging. I was here five hours before, when the sun was high and hot and tourists were on elephants' backs.

Walking now, I can barely see the path in the glow of my phone's flashlight. When the wooden fence post stops me short, I point my light down and follow a current of rainwater across the concrete floor until it washes up against three large, gray feet. A fourth foot twisted above the surface, tied tightly by a short chain and choked by ring of metal spikes(尖刺). When the elephant tires and puts her foot down, the spikes press deeper into her ankle.

Meena is four years and two months old, still a child as elephants go. Khammon Kongkhaw, her caretaker, told me earlier that Meena wears the spiked chain because she tends to kick. Kongkhaw has been responsible for Meena here at Mactaman Elephant Adventure, near Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, since she was 11 months old. He said he keeps her on the spiked chain only during the day and takes it off at night. But it's night now.

I ask Jin Laoshen, the Mactaman worker accompanying me on this nighttime visit, why her chain is still on. He says he doesn't know.

Mactaman is one of many animal attractions in and around tourist-crowded Chiang Mai. Meena's life is set to follow the same track as many of the roughly 3,800 captive(被捕获的) elephants in Thailand. When Meena is too old or sick to give rides -- maybe at 55, maybe at 75 she'll die. If she's lucky, She will get a few years of retirement. She'll spend most of her life on a chain.

1Why does the author decide to come back?

A.She knows a baby is in need of help urgently.

B.She wants to feed those shackled elephants.

C.She wants to release those shackled elephants

D.She wants to check baby elephant Meena.

2What can we conclude from the second paragraph?

A.The author is scared of walking in the path.

B.Meena only has three healthy legs.

C.Meena is treated badly and very painful.

D.One of Meena's legs is badly broken.

3What's the author's attitude towards those elephants?

    A.Indifferent B.Critical

    C.Sympathetic D.Negative

4We can infer that the purpose of the author's writing is ___________.

A.to appeal to people to care about the fate of those elephants

B.to describe those elephants to attract tourists around the world

C.to tell readers the story of a baby elephant in Chiang Mai, Thailand

D.to tell the reason why the number of elephants is decreasing
