二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The other day I was shopping at the local Chinese grocery store. There was a line at the fish counter, but only one staff person was there to take care of the customers. Some customers ordered quite an amount of fish for that staff person to work on. At last I was the second in line. All I wanted was a couple of crabs and should get out of there in no time.

Noticing it was very busy at the fish counter, another staff person came over to help. I was ready to be served, but the staff person went to the end of the line and began to help a couple of ladies with snail (蜗牛). The customers in front of me, being served, turned around and looked at me sympathetically and the customer behind me called to the staff person, “You should start here,” pointing at me. He was, well, ignored.

If someone asked me, “What is the most important rule to follow in America?” I would reply without hesitation. “Wait your turn at all times.” Wherever you go here in this country, you will find people waiting in a line quietly to get anything: whether in the supermarkets, department stores, bus stops, or gas stations, it’s just a matter of waiting your turn. In a larger sense, “wait your turn” is more than just a guideline — it is a very basic rule that reflects the fundamental value of the western cultures. But in some situations your turn does not always come based on when you get there and how long you have waited in line, just like my case at the store. Even though this did not often happen, it did make me feel upset.

1What happened to the author at the store?

    A.He was ill-treated by a customer. B.He wasn’t served upon his order.

C.He was asked to be served later. D.He was asked to do others a favor.

2What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.His belief. B.His culture.

    C.His experience. D.His rule.

3Why did the author write the text?

A.To emphasize his kindness to others. B.To introduce some western cultures to us.

C.To express his belief and his feeling. D.To show his disbelief in Queuing Rule.

  • 22、Animal appear to predict earthquakes by sensing electricity in the air — the first study to find reliable evidence of the phenomenon has shown.

Cameras revealed an “amazing” drop in the number of animals up to 23 days before a major quake hit their rainforest home at Yanachaga National Park in Peru. Lead scientist Dr Rachel Grant, from Anglia Ruskin University, said, “The results showed that just before the earthquake, animals’ activity dropped right down.”

On a normal day the cameras placed around Yanachaga National Park record between 5 and 15 animals. But in the 23 days before the earthquake, the number of animals dropped to five or fewer per day. No animals were photographed at all on five of the seven days immediately before the quake.

Another study showed that animal activity remained normal in the park over a different period when seismic (地震的) activity was low. Co-author, professor Friedemann Freund, said, “The cameras were located at an altitude of 900 meters. If air ionization occurred, the animals would escape to the valley below, where there were fewer positive ions ( 离子). With their ability to sense their environment, animals can help us understand small changes that occur before major earthquakes.”

Other evidence suggested that before the earthquake, the air around the high mountain sites filled with positive ions that can be produced when rocks are placed under stress. Positive ions have been known to cause ill effects in humans as well as animals. Scientists believe the animals were made to feel uncomfortable by the positive ions, leading them to avoid the area. They are thought to have escaped to lower ground, where the air was less ionized. The findings may help experts develop better short-term seismic forecasts.

【1】How did scientists conduct the study?

    A.By comparing different animals’ habits.

B.By observing animals in high mountains.

C.By explaining the positive ion phenomenon.

D.By analyzing images of animals they obtained.

【2】What can be inferred from animal activity before earthquakes?

A.The ground at a lower altitude is less ionized.

B.Cameras normally record more animals per day.

C.Earthquake warnings can be detected in lower places.

D.The activity of animals and earthquakes is consistent.

【3】What can we learn from the text?

A.The findings make for accurate seismic forecast.

B.Animals tend to be uneasy with more positive ions.

C.Positive ions make humans and animals depressed.

D.All the animals remain abnormal before the earthquake.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Negative Influence of Positive Ions.

    B.Ions’ Destruction to the Environment.

    C.Animals’ Behavior Before Earthquakes.

    D.Creatures’ Ability to Predict Earthquakes.

  • 23、One of China’s greatest resources is no doubt its diverse food. One of the most popular foods to be found is no doubt the street snacks that make up a large part of everyday life. “Compared with A Bite of China, which show eases chefs’ cooking processes and delicious food on air, Chinese Barbecue (烧烤) is more down-to-earth in describing the people,” commented a viewer.

A new documentary series, called Chinese Barbecue, tells the story of this popular food option that sizzles over hot coals on just about every street corner in cities and towns across the country. Barbecued meat shining over hot coal containers, while not as elegant as some of the fine dining options in China, are an essential part of people’s night life. The pleasant smell and atmosphere surrounding the grilled (烤的) street food are “something that could entice a girl to fly downstairs at night wearing her pajamas,” the documentary claims.

In many Chinese’s eyes, barbecue, regarded as the most ordinary and common night street snack, is different from homemade food by mothers as that is a symbol of kinship (亲情). Barbecue is where you go to become connected to people in society. And unlike official business lunches, during which people are rather reserved and polite, barbecue lets people cut loose and relax with old friends and newly made friends, leaving a lasting impression (friendship).

On the other side of the world, in the United States, BBQ, well received by all ages, demonstrates the even more enthusiastic personality of Americans, who grill large steaks on their outdoor stoves at home and enjoy competing to see who has the better cooking skills. It’s safe to say that the world, as a whole, holds deep-rooted good feelings toward barbecue, either for the taste or the warmth generated by fire.

【1】What is probably A Bite of China?

    A.A popular documentary.

    B.A commercial programme.

    C.A cuisine radio programme.

    D.A soap opera of chefs.

【2】What may the underlined word “entice” in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Force.

    B.Inform.

    C.Remind.

    D.Attract.

【3】What makes barbecue different from other food in Chinese’s view?

    A.Close family bonds.

    B.Quality food.

    C.Unique atmosphere.

    D.Beautiful cooking style.

【4】Why does author mention BBQ in the United States?

A.To indicate the popularity of BBQ.

    B.To present special American culture.

    C.To show friendship between countries.

D.To make a comparison with Chinese BBQ.

  • 24、He was once referred to as the Picasso of poetry. Beloved by Chileans of all classes, he is one of the most widely read and respected poets in history. And this year is the 100th birthday of Pablo Neruda (1904-1973).

Born with the name Neftali Ricardo Reyes Basolto, he was a tall, shy and lonely boy. He loved to read and started to write poetry when he was ten. The American poet Walt Whitman, whose framed picture Neruda later kept on his table, became a major influence on his work.

However, his father did not like the idea of having a poet for a son and tried to discourage him from writing. To cover up the publication of his first poem, he took the pen name Pablo Neruda.

In 1924 Neruda gained fame with his most widely read work “Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair’’. Yet his rich experience as a diplomat and exile made him go beyond the theme of love. His work also reflected the political struggle of the left and development of South America. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.

Neruda loved the sea which he saw as creative, destructive and forever moving. He found inspiration in the power and freedom of the waves and the seabirds on the coast. “I need the sea because it teaches me,” he wrote. “I move in the university of the waves.” He loved how the sea forever renewed itself, a renewal echoed in his work.
