21、A Korean wave is sweeping across China, with many Chinese women worshiping South Korean actors Kin Soo-hyun and Lee Min-ho as demigods(偶像). Chinese netizens always have different opinions. Over South Korean TV dramas, but there is no doubt that programs from the neighboring country are now enjoying a new round of popularity in China, And a big part of the credit for that goes to You Who Came From The Star, the South Korean TV series which is on the air now.
You Who Came From The Star and The Heirs (继承者们) have been subjects of hot online discussions throughout Asia. Besides, the book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, read by the hero You Who Came From The Star was a hard-to-get item on Amazon for a while.
The two TV programs have several common elements (因素):a tall, handsome, and rich hero who loves the heroine blindly and always protects her, and an equally handsome man madly in love with the same woman. Both programs describe the purity of love, which is expressed through a kiss or a warm hug. Perhaps that’s the secret of their success; perhaps people still like Cinderella-type stories.
The widening wealth gap is a matter of social concern both in South Korea and China, and the challenges that young people face in their hope for a better life might have caused many ordinary girls to dream of marrying rich, caring men. This is precisely what the popular South Korean TV drams describe. In fact, South Korean TV dramas are tailored to meet the market’s demands.
Many netizens even said at an earlier time that South Korean TV dramas had become popular because of their stereotyped (模式化的) themes: traffic accidents, cancer and other incurable diseases. But all that has changed with the success of You Who Came From The Star and The Heirs, which Chinese directors can use as examples, as well as inspiration, to improve their productions.
【1】What is the main reason for a new round of popularity in China?
A. The dramas are from the neighboring country North Korea.
B. Most of the Chinese netizens have voted for them.
C. The actors in the dramas are all gods.
D. It is because of You Who Came From The Star.
【2】Which is NOT included in the elements for the success of South Korean dramas?
A. Charming pure love stories.

22、To prevent the deserts coming near, China has planted billions of trees---to replace destroyed forests and as barriers against the sand. This isn’t a cure, though, say experts, as thirsty trees can make the problem worse by taking in groundwater.
“Planting tress is one way, but it isn’t that simple. It doesn’t solve the basic issue of water resources,” says Wu Bo, a professor. “We need to calculate how much water the trees will absorb, or else it could have a negative effect.”
Villagers in Zhengxin have taken on this challenge, with limited success. When the irrigation channels began to run dry, Lu Xianglin switched from wheat to cotton on his land. He also planted trees to protect his fields from sandstorms. He says he still gets good yields(产量) using flood irrigation and earns a good income for his family.
Other farmers haven’t stuck it out(坚持到底): about one in three have left Zhengxin in the past 10 years after their wheat crops died. Young people who can find jobs in the towns rarely return.
Last week, Mr Lu joined the other men in his village on a government-arranged trip to see the land that has been set aside for their relocation, nearly 40 miles to the south. The next day, he was back, shaking his head at the plan. The idea of uprooting his family troubles him, as does the idea of giving up the land that fed his forefathers. He prefers to stay and keep up the fight.
“With enough water, this problem can be solved,” Lu says. “We can plant trees and grass, and they will grow bigger. That will stop the desert.”
Experts say that farmers could switch to drip irrigation (滴灌)to lessen their water intake for growing crops. Elsewhere in the region, farmers have built brick greenhouses as part of a plan to grow vegetables using less water. Roadside signs urge farmers to “Save Water, Protect the Environment”.
【1】 The negative effect of planting trees in deserts is that __________.
A. it can make groundwater become less
B. it can prevent the sand moving freely
C. it can stop crops growing well
D. it can get the soil to become poor
【2】Why did Mr. Lu NOT accept the idea of relocation?
A. Because the plan of relocation will cost him much money.
B. Because his family had trouble moving away.
C. Because he was reluctant to give up his land.
D. Because he would rather stay than fight against the deserts.
【3】What can we infer from the passage?
A. The deserts drive more and more people to leave their homes for their lives.
B. People have no means to fight against the land becoming desert.
C. Water is the biggest barrier for people to stop the desert.
D. Planting trees cannot solve the problem of desertification of farmland.
【4】What advice is given by experts to save water?
A. To plant more trees.
B. To build greenhouses.
C. To change crops.
D. To use drip irrigation.
23、“Whatever normal meant”
A pioneering dance group is proving that you can chase your dreams—even in a wheelchair.
Since the age of three, Chelsie Hill had dreamed of becoming a dancer. “The only thing that I loved was dance," she told CBS News. That ambition nearly ended one night in 2010. Hill, then a 17-year-old high school senior in Pacific Grove, California, was in a car accident that put her in the hospital for 51 days and left her paralyzed(瘫痪的) from the waist down. For most people, that would have ruined all the hope of dancing career. For Hill, it was the beginning. “I wanted to prove to my community—and to myself—that I was still ‘normal’,” she told Teen Vogue. “Whatever normal meant, it definitely took a lot of learning and patience.”
After graduation, Hill wanted to expand her dance network to include women like her. She met people online who had suffered various spinal cord injuries but shared her determination, and she invited them to dance with her. Hoping to reach more people in a larger city, Hill moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and formed a team of dancers with disabilities she calls the “Rollettes”. “I want to break down the stereotype of wheelchair users and show that dance is dance, whether you're walking or you're rolling,” she told CBS News. So far, Hill has achieved her childhood dream. But the Rollettes have helped her find more. Every year she holds a dance camp for wheelchair users. She calls it the Rollettes Experience, and in 2019,173 participants from ten countries attended.
For many, it was the first time they'd felt they belonged. Edna Serrano, a member of the Rollettes, says “being part of the Rollettes team has given me the courage and confidence. It's so powerful to have my teammates in my life, because they're my teachers.” The dancers aren't the only ones who feel inspired. One woman saw a YouTube video of the team competing and commented, “You guys are so awesome! I'm in tears because you rock! To be in a wheelchair and still be so beautiful makes me know I can be beautiful too! Thank you! Feel free to find me.”

24、Lucy Houk remembers the day four years ago when her fourth-grade classmates chose instruments to play in the school orchestra(管弦乐队). “Everyone else was picking instruments and having fun and I couldn’t pick one because I couldn’t really play any of them,” she said. She longed to play the cello(大提琴), but the cello requires two hands-one to hold the bow, the other to work the four strings.
Lucy, daughter of Lara Houk and Zak Houk, has one arm-her left-and only a partial right arm. She was born prematurely at 24 weeks with lots of problems. Lucy’s night arm is missing just below the elbow, but “Whatever she wants to do, we find a way to do it.” Lara said.
Lucy, an easy going eighth-grader at Highland Middle School in the Blackhawk School District, said, “I can tie my shoes. I can jump rope. But what I really wanted was to play the cello, but no one could think of anything to help me play it back then.”
Last winter, Eric Baker noticed Lucy. Baker, who joined the district two years ago, is the orchestra director for fourth through 12th grades. He collaborated(协作) with Dale Moll, a technology and engineering teacher at the high school, to find a way to make an adaptive bow holder that could be attached to Lucy’s elbow. While a student at Duquesne University, Baker took a class and attended a seminar on adaptive instruments for students with special needs, but never thought he’d have to apply what he learned-until he met Lucy.
“I hope more people don’t think because of their physical limitation that they can’t do something. There are so many ways to work around this kind of thing, especially with all the technology we have around these days,” Baker said.
The Highland teachers “went above and beyond their normal, average, everyday teaching job to do something special for Lucy and gave her an opportunity like every other kid,” Lara said.
Today, playing the cello with her classmates, Lucy feels like every other kid.
