二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、China is one of the countries most affected by typhoons in the world. While summer is the peak typhoon season, autumn typhoons might be more dangerous.

In September, Typhoon Conson and Chanthu formed successively in the northwest Pacific Ocean. Chanthu has become a super typhoon, bringing “gale-force winds and rainstorms to regions including Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu,” reported Xinhua on Sept14.

It’s no surprise that super typhoons occur in September. From the vernal equinox (春分), the subsolar point (太阳直射点) moves from the equator to the Tropic of Cancer (北回归线), heating the tropical ocean in the northern hemisphere(半球). The sea temperature reaches the highest from August to September, according to Weather China website.

“The warming ocean, especially the warming northern South China Sea, enhances typhoons before landfall(着陆),” said Xiao Zhixiang, a researcher of the Guangxi Institute of Meteorological Sciences, in the conference of the Japan Geoscience Union in 2020.

Autumn brings cold air, and when that cold air meets a typhoon, it could make it more destructive. “This will develop into a powerful typhoon due to the greater temperature difference between the cold continent and the hot sea,” said Woo-Sik Jung, a researcher at Inje University in South Korea, at the conference. “In other words, the larger the temperature difference, the stronger the wind, the more powerful the autumn typhoon can be compared to the summer typhoon.”

Megi, the 13th typhoon of 2010, was generated in October. Before making landfall in Taiwan, it entered the South China Sea and then headed north to land in Zhangpu, Fujian province, where Megi met cold air from the north. The typhoon led to more than 1,000millimeters of rainfall in Ilan, Taiwan, resulting in many deaths, according to Weather China.

Autumn typhoons are not only powerful but also often unpredictable. Three typhoons “with the most complicated paths in China” include Wayne in 1986, Nat in 1991 and Nari in2001. Among them, Nat and Nari were formed in autumn, according to the National Meteorological Center.

【1】Which of the following contributes to the formation of super typhoons in September?

A.It’s highly wet in tropical areas.

B.The sun is heating the tropical ocean in the southern hemisphere.

C.The weather is warm along the coast.

D.The sea temperature is the highest.

【2】What can worsen the impact of a typhoon?

    A.The strong wind.

    B.The cold air.

    C.The unstable temperature.

    D.The heat on the continent.

【3】What can we learn about Megi from the text?

    A.It occurred in September 2010.

B.It first hit Taiwan and then Fujian.

C.It cost many people their lives in Taiwan.

D.It formed in the South China Sea.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.The most powerful summer typhoons.

    B.Examples of unpredictable typhoons.

    C.Why autumn typhoons are unpredictable.

D.How the National Meteorological Center predicts typhoons.

  • 22、   One of my favorite hobbies is exchanging old-fashioned, paper-with-a-stamp-on-it postcards with random strangers around the world.

The Postcrossing Project was created by Paulo Magalhaes in 2005. He liked getting mails—especially postcards. He thought others did, too—but how could he connect with them? That’s when he came up with the idea of an online platform (postcrossing.com): There, postcard lovers like me can sign up to send a postcard to someone who has registered online, and receive a postcard in return.

Along with a randomly selected address, participants get a unique code to put on the postcard. When the postcard arrives, the recipient registers that code with the site, which then causes the sender’s address to be given to another postcrosser in turn. In practice, this means that for nearly every postcard I send (a few get lost in the mail) I get one back. And since I never know who will send me a card or where in the world they live, every trip to the mailbox holds the potential for a wonderful surprise.

Privacy-conscious Americans might worry about sharing their address with strangers overseas. But postcrossers are friendly, polite, respectful folks—in more than 450 cards exchanged, I've yet to have a bad experience.

On days when the international news is depressing, postcrossing is my comfort. There’s nothing like getting a card from a child in China just learning to write in English, or a grandmother in Belarus describing her most recent gardening success to remind me that we truly are members of one global family, far more similar than we are different.

It seems like such a small thing to send out a postcard. But as travel and communication technology continue to shrink the world, it’s important to remember that it isn’t just for diplomats and politicians to represent our country anymore. All of us have the power—and perhaps the responsibility—to be ambassadors, to show the best of your country to the world.

And it's good to know that what you need to accomplish this is not necessarily complicated or expensive. It can be as simple as a postcard.

    1Why did Paulo set up postcrossing.com ?

A.To discuss personal hobbies with strangers.

B.To exchange postcards with others in the world

C.To collect different postcards from other countries..

D.To provide a platform for communication online.

2According to the passage, postcrossers __________.

A.don't know who will send them postcards

B.are sure to get a postcard back immediately

    C.often choose a receiver's address carefully

D.register every postcard they receive online

3What did the writer learn from postcrossing?

A.The international news is usually depressing.

B.Americans are more conscious about privacy.

C.Postcrossers sometimes describe their bad experience.

D.The whole world is actually a big family.

4What does the underlined word "this" refer to?

    A.Choosing a diplomat to represent a country.

B.Having the responsibility to be an ambassador.

C.Showing the best of your country.

D.Shrinking the world with communication technology.

  • 23、Amazon sometimes makes us check a box to save money. Those orange “coupon” (优惠券) banners below the price on Amazon’s online store are confusing. Why does Amazon make through the extra step of clicking a box to “save $2 when you apply this coupon?” Why doesn’t the coupon just apply automatically?

The answer lies in the subtle but highly effective way Amazon and other stores use shopping psychology to influence our buying decisions. By making us click a box, Amazon hopes to avoid the “cart abandonment” problem—when shoppers add something to their virtual shopping cart but don’t end up buying it.

That’s a big challenge for online retailers. They miss out on billions of dollars of potential sales annually because of shoppers thinking twice about buying a product. Around 70% of online shopping carts containing at least one item are eventually abandoned, according to the Baymard Institute, an e-commerce consultancy based in Copenhagen.

The top reason customers walk away: They say they were just browsing and weren’t ready to make a purchase. So companies look for persuasion tactics (策略) to get shoppers to follow through and click the “buy” button. Amazon’s tactic to display a coupon option, instead of just automatically showing a discounted price, gives shoppers an extra incentive (动机) to make the purchase right away, say marketing experts.

Customers also want to be rewarded for the effort they put in to shop. It may not feel like much to click a box—but it does make a difference. Amazon’s coupon box puts customers in a more active and engaged role in landing a reward, making it more visceral (发自内心的) for them, said Tamara Masters, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business, who studies shopping psychology.

“By consciously seeing and clicking on the coupon box, instead of just having the coupon applied automatically the reward can be felt more acutely,” Masters said. That’s a benefit to Amazon in the long run. “When a consumer feels rewarded after making an effort to purchase something, they are more willing to buy and more willing to pay,” she added.

The coupon box is just one of the ways Amazon targets shoppers looking for bargains. Amazon also has a standalone page on its website for coupons on select brands. If shoppers go to the page, they can clip the coupons virtually and don’t have to take the extra step of checking a box.

This approach is designed to reach the shoppers who will shop exclusively based on which brands are offering coupons, which are different than products on sale, price promotions or discounts.

【1】Why does Amazon apply the coupon box to help customers save money?

A.To avoid the abandonment of coupons.

B.To ensure customers make wise choices.

C.To increase customers’ chance of buying.

D.To recommend good products to customers.

【2】What is the motivation behind customers buying behavior according to Tamara Masters?

A.Their effort to get a reward.

    B.Their expectations of price.

    C.Their curiosity about the reward.

D.Their desire to make a difference.

【3】What does Tamara Masters think of Amazon’s tactic?

A.It is a losing bat in the long term.

    B.It can provide much convenience

    C.It might cause consumers complaints.

D.It’s a reliable way to encourage purchase.

【4】What do the last two paragraphs tell us about Amazon?

A.It will save shoppers’ time to check a box.

B.It persuades select brands to offer coupons.

C.It tries various means to target different shoppers.

D.It plans to reduce unfair competition among brands.

  • 24、Over the past 50 years, scientists have been attempting to understand one of the most pressing iss ues in biology — understanding how proteins fold. Recently, DeepMind, a leader in Al, demonstrated their project AlphaFold which won first place in a contest that encourages teams to accurately predict protein structures.

Proteins are one of the main building blocks of life — they help us maintain our health and fuel our bodies with energy. Each protein is made up of one-dimensional-strings of amino acids (氨基酸), and the folding process occurs when the chains fold into a three-dimensional shape to create an active protein. Protein folding is important as the structure of the protein determines its function. However, issues may arise during the folding process as proteins can become unfolded or misfolded, resulting in diseases and life-threatening conditions, such as Parkinsons disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and more.

Being able to predict a proteins shape is incredibly important. It will allow scientists to develop the right medicines and drug molecules (分子) that can join to the protein and possibly fix, or alleviate the consequences. Fixing damaged proteins is the key to solving a wide variety of diseases

DeepMind takes inspiration from the human brain and its pattern-matching abilities, known as neural networks. To train the algorithm (算法), scientists feed it several amino acid chains and the final protein structure. The machine gradually learns by observing the patterns, until it is ready to start making predictions.

Andrei Lupas, an evolutionary biologist in Germany, had been trying to understand a protein structure for a decade. Alpha Fold solved the problem in just thirty minutes!

There are some who question AlphaFold’s abilities, claiming that the algorithm may not work as well in real-life settings where amino acid strings are more complex. But despite this DeepMind’s achievement is definitely a milestone in biology. Not only is DeepMind in the process of applying this to the current COVID-19 pandemic and what proteins are affected but future pandemics and viruses could also be fought with ease!

【1】What can we infer from the second paragraph?

    A.Unfolded proteins are incredibly active.

B.Some diseases result from damaged proteins.

C.All proteins have the similar shapes.

D.The function of proteins decides their structures.

【2】What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Suffer

    B.Cause

    C.Bear

    D.Ease

【3】Why does the author mention Andrei Lupas?

A.To stress the drawback of AlphaFold.

B.To analyze the barriers for AlphaFold

C.To explain the learning process of AlphaFold.

D.To prove the efficiency of AlphaFold.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

A.AI solves the biggest problem in biology

    B.AI helps fix damaged proteins

C.AI makes proteins change their shapes

D.AI finds the cause of the illnesses
