二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   People have relied on the forests of the Yucatan Peninsula for thousands of years. The ancient Maya who built the great cities of TikalPalenque and Calakmul used the region’s trees for building material and fuel wood. But populations on the peninsula grew so large that by around A.D. 900the Maya had deforested large areas, leading to frequent natural disasters. Eventually they were forced to abandon most of their cities entirely. Today, Yucatan forests are home to around 500 kinds of trees.

But only a few of those---including the mahogany Swietenia macrophylla, with its beautiful, workable and rot-resistant wood---are real moneymakers. One large trunk can net $1,000 or more. And because it grows in isolated groups, it’s an easy species to harvest selectively. “Mahogany is king, ” says Ellis.

Noh-Bec is not ancient; it was founded in the 1930s by chicleros —people who made their living mainly by harvesting natural chewing gum from chicle found in trees rich in the Yucatan. They began to see mahogany’s value in the late 1970s and early ’80s, when communities regained the power to manage their own forests under the existing ejido system. In ejidos, elected councils run parcels of land, though government regulations still limit what they can do. Noh-Bec community members capitalized on their autonomy by building a sawmill and, later, charcoal furnaces to process and market furniture and other wood products.

In 1993, the community also became the first forest certified as sustainably harvested by the Forest Stewardship Council, earning it a profit in international markets. Noh-Bec’s profits now come mainly from cutting and selling mahogany to developed world customers who want to know that their purchases don’t contribute to deforestation.

1What did the Maya do that finally led them to desert most of their cities?

    A.They found more valuable trees.

    B.They ignored the natural disasters.

    C.They overused the Yucatan forests.

D.They kept the population under control.

2What does Ellis mean by “mahogany is king”in paragraph 2)?

A.Mahogany is among the trees that will bring people fortune.

B.Mahogany is one of the biggest kinds of trees in Yucatan.

C.Mahogany is a species that exist in Yucatan in the largest quantities.

D.Mahogany is regarded as a kind of trees that appeal to visitors most.

3What can we learn from the passage about Noh-Bec?

A.It has a history of more than 100 years.

B.It funded the Forest Stewardship Council.

C.It was totally independent of the government.

D.It cuts trees in a way that is friendly to the forest.

4The best title of the passage might be .

    A.An ancient community B.Money trees

C.A profitable forest. D.Harm of deforestation.

  • 22、In a recent survey in America, 62% of people said that creativity was more important to success in the workplace than they had expected when they were in school.

【1】 It is of course possible to scan people’s brains and see which parts are working when an idea is created. It can also be considered as something that can’t be identified. Creativity is what comes to you when you least expect it. You cannot demand creativity from your mind.

One misunderstanding about creativity is that it is just for some special people. This is not true. 【2】 Another is that creativity is all about the arts but this simply isn’t true creativity relates to maths and science in just the way it does to music and literature.

Those who see things differently from others and try to make their ideas a reality are the ones who make the greatest changes in the world. Therefore, it is important that schools do not prevent creativity. 【3】 Students should be taught to ask questions and investigate when things do not make sense. 【4】

It is worrying that many schools are less concerned now with creativity when this is actually the most important time in history for it. People used to study hard, go to university, and get a job. That was it. But now, everyone works hard, goes to university and there aren’t the jobs out there that ensure a safe future. 【5】 We can use it to set ourselves apart and channel it to face the challenges of the future.

    A.Everyone can be creative.

B.Creativity is connected with many aspects

C.However, creativity can be acquired at any age.

D.Instead, they should work to grow and exercise it.

E.It’s hard to work out where exactly creativity comes from.

F.Without creativity, we can’t set ourselves apart from others.

G.They need to learn to see problems as opportunities for learning rather than something unsuccessful.

  • 23、A national engineering laboratory in Tianjin is the base of the world’s largest and most advanced sound source identification system for commercial use. At first glance, the equipment, known as a sound camera and consisting of a big wheel with a supporting frame, is similar to a mini Ferris wheel that lacks seats and cannot rotate. A closer look at the 5-meter-diameter wheel reveals high-tech features like an array of 144 sensors used to capture, identify and analyze the source of noise on railways. “It is like a sound radar for discovering noise,” said Hu Wenlin, vice head of the National Engineering Laboratory for Noise Control and Reduction at China Railway Design Corporation.

Hu said that the data produced by the machine allows engineers to better understand the sounds generated when a train passes by, such as which part produces the most noise. After analyzing the data, engineers can draw up precise plans to reduce noise and make construction plans accordingly. For example, if a railway passes a residential area with stricter noise abatement requirements, engineers can come up with a plan to minimize noise, usually at greater expense. But if a railway passes a place with more relaxed noise control requirements, designers can make a cheaper plan.

Noise control technologies have been applied to dozens of major railway projects across the country. The sound camera, fully developed in China, is advanced by world standards, said Wang Changjin, the director of the National Engineering Laboratory. Before the sound camera was available, engineers usually used a pole fitted with sensors to collect sound data along railway lines. “It cannot be compared to the technique we are using now, which is far more accurate,” Wang said.

The machine is just one of many innovations developed by the laboratory. It has conducted many research projects on railways, leading to the development of key noise control equipment for high-speed railways and bringing quieter lives to people living near the lines.

【1】What can we know about the sound camera from paragraph 1?

A.It is invented by Hu Wenlin.

B.It is a sound radar in the shape of a wheel.

C.It is fitted with many sensors to study noise.

D.It transforms sound information into images.

【2】What does the underlined word “abatement” probably mean?

    A.Increasing.

    B.Ranking.

    C.Reducing.

    D.Analyzing.

【3】What highlights the sound camera according to paragraph 3?

A.It is very easy to move.

    B.It consumes little energy.

    C.It is available for everyone.

    D.It operates far more accurately.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Technology Frees People from Noise

B.Sound Camera Makes Rail Lines Quieter

C.The Importance of Conducting Sound Research

D.The Influence of Noise Pollution on People’s Life

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was last August. We were on vacation, just me, my husband, and our two kids, out for a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We went to a popular place called Diana's Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat rocks up the mountain. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.

Both where we sat and down below, the water fell down and into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing water around. I was frightened as I saw my two boys jump between the smooth rocks. I told them to stay away from all those edges. But I soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, laughing in the pools.

Suddenly, I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in fast-moving water. I shouted at him to get out. He called back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge. All I remember from the moments after was screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed, because I couldn't force myself to look.

My husband was already jumping down the rocks. I finally looked. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was gone. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “We are leaving!” They walked away, never even looking back to see whether our child was OK.

It was about 4 meters from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, which was filled with huge rocks. Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. That's what Lisa told us. We didn't know her name was Lisa at that point. All we knew was that while everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help, Lisa didn't hesitate.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Later, Lisa told me that she was a nurse.
