  • 21、The 2021 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to the novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, for his "compassionate insight of the effects of colonialism (殖民主义) and the fate of the refugee (难民)".

Gurnah is a Tanzanian writer who writes in English and lives and works in the United Kingdom. He was born in Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous island off the east African coast. Zanzibar underwent a revolution in 1964 in which citizens of Arab origin were persecuted (迫害). Gurnah was forced to flee the country when he was 18. He began to write in English as a 21-year-old refugee in England. He has written numerous works that pose questions around ideas of belonging, colonialism, displacement, memory and migration.

He is one of the most important contemporary postcolonial novelists writing in Britain today and is the first black African writer to win the prize since Wole Soyinka in 1986. Gurnah is also the first Tanzanian writer to win.

Anders Olsson, chair of the Nobel committee, said that the Gurnah's novels abandon stereotypical descriptions and turn our eyes to a culturally diverse East Africa unfamiliar to many in other parts of the world.

Gurnah, who was in the kitchen when he was informed of his win, said that he believed it was a wind-up.

"I thought it was a prank (恶作剧)," he said. "These things are usually floated for weeks in advance, or sometimes months beforehand, about who are the runners, so it was not something that was in my mind at all. I was just thinking, I wonder who'll get it?"

"I am honored to be awarded this prize and to join the writers who have been superior to me on this list. It is overwhelming and I am so proud."

His longtime editor, Alexandra Pringle at Bloomsburg, said Gurnah's win was "most deserved" for a writer who has not previously received due recognition.

【1】Why is Gurnah awarded the Nobel Prize in literature?

A.He has rich experience of life.

    B.He is a productive author.

C.He has gained popularity among readers.

D.He explores the suffering caused by war and colonialism.

    A.He lives in Zanzibar.

B.He is the first to win the Nobel Prize.

C.He used to be a refugee.

D.He adopts Arabic as his literary language.

【3】What was Gurnah's first reaction to his award?

    A.Surprised.

    B.Honored.

    C.Delighted.

    D.Proud.

【4】What did Alexandra Pringle think of Gurnah's win?

    A.It depended on luck.

    B.It was an overdue recognition.

    C.It made East Africa known.

    D.It was an unfair decision.

  • 22、Loneliness generally visits all of us at one time or another in our lives and we wonder how to cure loneliness. Help other lonely people. 【4】. They suffer a lot from being lonely and don’t know how to cope with their loneliness. If you look for those people and strive to help cure their loneliness, in the end you will also be helping yourself to cure your own loneliness.

  • 23、My Favorite Money Saving Tips

One of the things that many folks want to do is better money habits. I’m pretty good about my saving, and fairly responsible in my spending. So as many of you all probably want to “save more money” or “spend less money”, I wanted to share my saving tips with you.

Manage your debt. 【1】 If you have credit card debt, pay this down before you start doing any other savings. If you have several cards with debt, try the laddering technique. Start by paying down your debt on the highest interest card you have. Once that balance is at zero, go to the next highest percent card and so on.

【2】 Life can throw at you unexpected expenses that can easily add up quickly. One of your main savings goals should be to build an emergency fund. You should have ready-to-go-in liquid cash, 6-9 months of living expenses for a rainy day. 【3】 But don’t invest the money. Make sure you can access this money in an absolute emergency.

Spend your cash. Seems crazy but it’s true! This is especially helpful to those who tend to be impulsive (冲动的) shoppers. Figure out your monthly budget, and divide it by 4. Add this amount to your wallet each week and only spend the cash. 【4】 Studies have shown that you are less likely to break large bills or to spend less cash when you have to physically pull the cash out.

Keep your extra cash in a high yield savings account. Though it’s rare to find a bank that provides a large interest rate on savings, right now you can get 0.5% and 0.1 to 0.25% on checking. 【5】

    A.Get an emergency fund.

    B.Avoid unnecessary expenses.

    C.Don’t touch the credit cards.

D.You must make this a priority.

E.But remember to check it from time to time.

F.It’s a great way to add a little extra income to your money.

G.This amount should be kept in your high-yield savings account.

  • 24、Using the power of artificial intelligence (AI), scientists have revealed new insights into the creation and destruction of mass extinction. Contrary to conventional knowledge, their study suggests that larger extinctions are not always a form of “creative destruction” that allows new organisms to radiate (向周围辐射出去) and evolve. Instead, it suggests that mass extinction is rarely associated with new species of radiation.

Dr. Hoyal Cuthill, the lead study author from the University of Essex in the UK and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, said in a statement, “Some of the most challenging things to understand the history of life are the vast timelines involved and the number of species. New machine learning applications can help us understand the information in human-readable form. This means that we can, so to speak, hold the evolution of half a billion years in the palm of our hand and gain new insights from what we see.”

They concluded that mass extinction and later radiation were not connected as previously thought. Within 5 percent of the most significant periods of disruption (中断), AI detected “big five mass extinctions, seven more mass extinctions, two mass extinction-radiation events and 15 mass radiations. Most importantly, it discovers that massive radiation and extinction rarely occurred with each other, changing the view that greater extinction leads to a kind of deep cycle-like species radiation of nature. It appears that larger extinctions are certainly not the engine of evolutionary radiation. Take the Cambrian Explosion for example and it was about 41 million years ago when a large group of animals first appeared on the first fossil record and the dawn of a high mobile animal equipped with modern physical features.

This new study found that a handful of other notable explosions of biodiversity, including the Cambrian Explosion, usually occurred at a time when they were largely isolated (孤立的) from extinction. Dr. Nicholas Guttenberg, a study co-author from the Tokyo Institute of Technology explained, “Ecosystems are dynamic and you don’t need anything to exist to allow something new to appear.”

【1】What’s the function of the first paragraph?

A.To analyze the cause of creative destruction.

B.To tell us the result of the new study.

C.To explain the power of artificial intelligence

D.To present the conventional idea of mass extinction.

【2】What do Dr. Hoyal Cuthill’s words imply?

A.New AI machines learn applications better.

B.It’s difficult to understand the history of life.

C.New species appear before mass extinction.

D.AI contributes a lot to the study of evolution.

【3】Why is the Cambrian Explosion mentioned in the text?

    A.To provide knowledge of history.

B.To highlight the importance of AI.

    C.To support the new study.

D.To prove the previous view is right.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.A new understanding of mass extinction.

    B.The processes of biological evolution.

C.Animal species with modern physical features

D.The relationship between mass extinction and radiation

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

    71. Click to download teacher

“Books will soon disappear in schools,” Thomas Edison announced in 1913: they would, he believed, soon be replaced by silent films. Each new wave of information technology - radio, television, computers - has led to similar predictions.

Like teachers, digital educational technology comes in many forms, from wonderful to awful. But, used properly, it now deserves more prominence (重要性) in schools - especially in poor countries where human teachers are often ignorant, absent or both.

According to a recent World Bank study of seven sub - Saharan African countries, half of nine - year - olds cannot read a simple word and three - quarters cannot read a simple sentence. The reason is terrible. The same study found that only 7% of teachers had the minimum knowledge needed to teach reading and writing effectively. When classrooms were inspected to see whether a teacher was present, half the time the answer was no. As for the absence of teachers, if expensive teachers do not turn up to class, government would, surely, fire them? Easier said than done. Poor governments often lack the money to check on teachers in distant villages.

Several recent studies suggested - tech can help. It seems to bring about bigger improvements in poor countries than in rich ones. Some of the scarce resources being spent on teachers could therefore be better spent on ed - tech. That does not mean dumping computers on schools in the hope that children will understand how to use them. Instead, it means providing schools with software that children can use with minimal help from an adult, that sends teachers prompts about what they are supposed to be teaching and that allows the authorities to check on whether the teacher is in the classroom.

Technology is no cure - all. Good traditional teachers are not outdated, and are never likely to be. And authorities need to hold teachers to account. But ed - tech can help greatly - by monitoring pupils and teachers alike, assisting the best teachers and, most important, making up for the failings of the worst.
