二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、One of the most stressful days of Susan McFrederick’s life was watching her son get wheeled away for surgery hours after he was born in 2021.

But after the operation, Susan burst into tears for a different reason: across the cut on their newborn son’s back was a sweet winter scene hand-drawn on his bandages.

“There were rolling hills of snow, a pine tree and a snowman with a hat and broom,” she recalled. “It was extremely touching and comforting to know that somebody had taken the time to do that for my family. It was a moment I’ll never forget.”

Susan soon learned the artist was her son’s surgeon, Robert Parry, who discovered another way to use his hands in the mid-1980s during his internship at a children’s medical center, where he saw one of his colleagues cutout heart and shark shapes to decorate children’s bandages.

“My first reaction was, ‘What is he doing? Hey, that’s kind of neat.’ ” Parry recalled. I especially liked the reactions of the parents and the patients when they saw his artwork The smiles took everyone’s attention from the surgery. Then I decided to follow suit”.

Parry quickly graduated from his early hearts and sharks, and started to surprise families with drawings that captured young patients’ personalities. From Snoopy to Spider-Man and bears to butterflies, there isn’t much he hasn’t drawn. Most kids want superheroes, sports team logos or princesses, while babies often receive scenes with flowers, trees and sea creatures. During the last 30 years, Parry estimates he has left examples of his handiwork over the stitches (伤口缝线) of more than 10,000 children.

“During a time of stress for families, it’s nice to be able to help them smile and laugh,” Parry said. “This is something positive that I can do for them, which is what I like most about it.”

For Parry, the reward is knowing he hopefully made a difference in a child’s life, and except for his drawing son bandages, “they can go on and live their lives and never know I was in it.” he said.

He’s not ready to retire, but he’s found a new hobby to keep his hands skillful in the years to come. “I’ve taken up knitting,” Parry said. “Hats, sweaters, gloves—I enjoy it all. But mostly, I enjoy giving everything away.”

【1】How did Parry get the idea of decorating children’s bandages?

A.He was motivated by his patients.

B.He was inspired by his colleague.

C.He was required to learn the skill during his internship.

D.He was encouraged by Susan to show his genius for art.

【2】Parry’s artworks during the last 30 years show that he ______.

A.devoted himself more to art than to medicine

B.knew more about his patients than their parents

C.took into consideration the tastes of individual patients

D.created a large number of works beyond his expectations

【3】What does Parry expect to achieve with his artworks?

A.To get a recognition from his supervisors.

B.To make a difference in his dull medical career.

C.To lift the spirits of his patients and their parents.

D.To make his patients’ parents see a glimmer of hope.

【4】What can we learn about Parry from the last paragraph of the passage?

A.He is eager to show others his new skills.

B.He enjoys trying new ways to help others.

C.He is looking forward to life after retirement.

D.He is more interested in knitting than drawing.

  • 22、Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making it possible for companies to monitor workers’ behavior in great detail and in real time. Start to slack off (懈怠), and AI could talk to your boss.

One company offering such services is London-based start-up Status Today. Its AI platform relies on a regular supply of employee data, including everything from the files you access to when you use a key card. From this, it builds a picture of how employees normally function and signals any unusual performance. The idea is to spot when someone might become a security risk by doing something different from their usual behavioral patterns. “All of this gives us fingerprint of a user, so if we think the fingerprint doesn’t match, we raise a warning”, says Mircea Dumitrescu, the company’s chief technology officer.

The system also aims to catch employee actions that could accidentally cause a security breach (漏洞), like opening malware (恶意软件).“We’re not monitoring if your computer has a virus.” says Dumitrescu. “We’re monitoring human behaviors.”

But catching the security breach means monitoring everyone, and the AI can also be used to track employee productivity. “It seems like they are just using the reputation of AI to give an air of lawfulness to old-fashioned workplace surveillance (监视),” says Javier Ruiz Diaz of digital campaigning organization the Open Rights Group. “You have a right to privacy and you shouldn’t be expected to give that up at work.”

Exactly how companies use the system will be up to them, but it’s hard to shake the picture of an AI constantly looking over employees’ shoulders. “It will bother people, and that could be counterproductive if it affects their behavior,” says Paul Bemal at the University of East Anglia.

Phil Legg at the University of the West of England says it will never catch every security risk. “If people know they’re being monitored, they can change their behavior,” he says.

【1】According to the text, AI monitors employees by ________.

    A.taking pictures of them

    B.getting access to their data

    C.signaling their usual performance

    D.catching their actions

【2】What’s Javier Ruiz Diaz’s attitude towards the system?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Negative.

【3】What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A.Security breach.

    B.Employees’ productivity.

    C.The right to privacy.

    D.Workplace surveillance.

【4】Phil Legg’s concern about the system suggests that ________.

A.it is too risky to be used at work

    B.it will affect employees’ emotions

C.it may not be so effective as expected

    D.it will encourage employee, productivity

  • 23、Like a tired marriage, the relationship between libraries and publishers has long been dull. E-books, however, are causing heartache. Libraries know they need digital wares if they are to remain relevant, but many publishers are too careful about piracy and lost sales to co-operate. Among the big six, only Random House and Harper Collins license e-books with most libraries. The others have either denied requests or are reluctantly experimenting.

Publishers are wise to be nervous. Owners of e-readers are exactly the customers they need: book-lovers with money—neither the devices nor broadband connections come cheap. If these wonderful people switch to borrowing e-books instead of buying them, what then? Electronic borrowing is awfully convenient. Unlike printed books, which must be checked out and returned to a physical library miles from where you live, book files can be downloaded at home. Digital library catalogues are often browsed at night from a comfortable sofa. The files disappear from the device when they are due. Awkwardly for publishers, buying an e-book costs more than renting one but offers little extra value.

You cannot resell it, lend it to a friend or burn it to stay warm. Owning a book is useful if you want to taste it repeatedly, but who reads Fifty Shades of Grey twice?

E-lending is not simple, however. There are lots of different and often incompatible (不兼容的) e-book formats, devices and licences. Most libraries use a company called Over Drive, a global distributor that secures rights from publishers and provides e-books and audio files in every format. Yet publishers and libraries are worried by Over Drived market dominance, as the company can increasingly determine fees and conditions.

Library boosters argue that book borrowers are also book buyers, and that libraries are vital spaces for readers to discover new work. Many were cheered by a recent Pewsurvey, which found that more than half of Americans with Horary cards say they prefer to buy their e-books. But the report also noted that few people know that e-books are available at most libraries, and that popular titles often involve long waiting lists, which may be what inspires people to buy. So publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search of the right balance. Random House raised its licensing prices earlier this year and Harper Collins limits libraries to lending its titles 26 times. The others are watching, holding their breath. In Britain the government will soon announce a review of the matter. The story of the library e-book is a nail-biter.

【1】What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

A.Libraries are eager to keep relationship with publishers.

B.Several publishers have sold e-books to most libraries.

C.Libraries care too much about piracy and book sales.

D.Most publishers hesitate to cooperate with libraries.

【2】What is the author’s opinion about the electronic borrowing?

    A.awful.

    B.convenient.

    C.awkward.

    D.valuable.

【3】What do we learn about Over Drive?

A.It has the privilege to offer readers various brands of e-readers.

B.It distributes e-books and audio files to publishers.

C.Its market dominance threatens publishers and libraries.

D.It devotes itself to improving conditions of e-book market.

【4】Which does the underlined phrase “a nail-biter” probably mean in the passage?

    A.something that makes you nervous.

    B.something that makes you annoyed.

    C.something that makes you astonished.

    D.something that makes you embarrassed.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was looking to buy a horse that could be a backyard buddy, a friend and new member of the family. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, s0 I went to the local mothly horse auction to see if I might rescue one of the horses from a potential death sentence. There are always horses there who have plenty of life left and just need someone to show up and recognize their value , see their heart, and offer them a space where they can just be a loved horse.

Toward the end of the auction, a young col (小马) was brought into the ring. It was clear he hadn’t been handled and was not in good shape. He had patches of bare skin where his hair had been whipped away. He had scars where his mouth had been tied shut with a wire. His legs were covered with cuts and sores. Nobody raised their arm to place a bid. Too small to interest the meat buyers.

The auctioneer launched the bidding at 8$00. The price came down, and down. 1 felt a mixture of disgust and anger that these people were s0 incapable of seeing the beauty and will to live in this horse. Finally, the auctioneer slowed down and said, “Okay folks, who will take this guy home for fifty bucks?”

ME, apparently! My arm shot up into the air, declaring to the entire crowd that my heart is the softest.

BANG! The gavel came down, and I now owned the colt who had no training and a terrible start in life. But in this particular moment, nothing was more important than helping set this horse on a new path in life.

I saw my new horse alone in a large paddock (围场). I walked over to the gate and sod there for a while. I just stood there, watching him. I didn’t want to own this horse, and I didn’t want to train him.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I opened the gate and stepped into the paddock.
