21、 Born in Beijing in September 1930, Yuan Longping began his career as an agricultural researcher in the 1950s. He often said in interviews that he was driven to increase rice output in China because of the hunger he had witnessed. “My lifetime pursuit is to ensure all people stay away from hunger,” he once said. In the decades that followed, Yuan was associated with some of the most important breakthroughs in his field.
As early as 1964, Yuan theorized that a male-sterile (雄株不育) grain could be crossed with other plants to boost yields (产量), but it was not until 1973 that he developed the first hybrid rice thanks to the discovery of a wild rice species that made the breakthrough possible. Mass cultivation of the crop began in 1976 and proved key to China being able to feed one-fifth of the world's population with just 9 per cent of its limited land.
In 1995, he produced a two-line hybrid rice and was tasked by the government to improve yields still further. He later developed a single line hybrid rice. In 1996, the agriculture ministry tasked Yuan to start a program to breed “super rice”, plants of much higher yields.
Various hybrid rice has yields that tend to be about 20 per cent higher than those of traditional rice, and have been planted in 16 million hectares, or more than half of China's rice acreage. China could feed 70 million more people thanks to Yuan's research.
Yuan was awarded the World Food Prize in 2004, for “pioneering research that helped transform China from food shortage to food security within three decades”.
China first exported hybrid rice to the United States in 1979 and has reached agreements on the technology—sometimes called “rice diplomacy”—with several developing countries, including the Philippines, Pakistan and Madagascar. According to the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre, about 8 million hectares overseas has been planted.
In his later years, he was also involved in research in China and Dubai into growing crops in seawater.
In 2019, Yuan was awarded the Medal of the Republic, the country's highest honour, for his contribution to China's food security and scientific development of agriculture, as well as increasing the world's food output.

22、Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei officially launched the 2.0 version of its self-developed operating system (OS) on Wednesday night, the HarmonyOS. The move paved the way for the Chinese firm to challenge Google’s and Apple’s role in current and future OS ecosystems.
Among the major strong points, the HarmonyOS, with a highly scalable (可扩展的) platform, can be applied to various devices, including smart phones, computers, and other electronic devices, the company said.
Analysts said the OS will do a lot to promote Huawei’s change into being a software service provider. Huawei’s founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said that the company was focusing on software because future development in the field was basically “out of US control and we will have greater independence and autonomy (自主权)”. Ren called on the company’s staff to “dare to lead the world” in software.
“The success of a software system will always have to rely on hardware (硬件), but nowadays, Huawei doesn’t have enough hardware to support its software ambitions — that’s the most difficult part,” said Jiang Junmu, chief writer at a news website. Once as the world’s largest smart phone maker, Huawei’s national smart phone market share (份额) has continued to drop in recent months. Liang Zhenpeng, an industry analyst, said that as an OS designed for the Internet of Things(IoT) era, the HarmonyOS may need more time and equipment to test than the OS for smart phones, and that will take at least two to three years.
Moreover, Liang noted that an ecosystem will always be the decisive factor for the success of an operating system. “Does the HarmonyOS have enough applications that can attract consumers to update to the OS? That’s a question,” Liang said. So far, more than 300 application and service partners, 1000 hardware partners, and 500,000 developers have joined in the set-up of the Harmony ecosystem.
【1】What advantage does the HarmonyOS have over other operating systems?
A.It provides users with a secure experience.
B.It operates faster than Google system.
C.It works on a wide range of equipment.
D.It has different versions in different countries.
【2】What can you infer from Ren Zhengfei’s words?
A.Huawei’s change is challenging.
B.Huawei is seeking a new software service provider.
C.The company’s staff need to improve their skills.
D.Huawei will break its dependence on the US.
【3】What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The difficulties in promoting the HarmonyOS.
B.The success of developing the HarmonyOS.
C.Smartphone sales in the national market.
D.The future software ambition of Huawei.
【4】What does Liang expect partners and developers to do?
A.Create enough applications.
B.Update the original devices.
C.Cooperate with experts in various fields.
D.Build the HarmonyOS ecosystem.
23、Going to the zoo is an all-time favorite activity for children and families. 【1】 In order to make a decision,we must consider the arguments for and against keeping wild animals in zoos.
One benefit of zoos is that they are useful for educating people about animals. We can observe animals at close range and learn more about them than we can from books and the TV. It also provides an opportunity to promote the conservation of endangered species. 【2】 This helps them to come up with better ways of protecting animals from harm in their natural habitat.
On the other hand, keeping animals in zoos is similar to a prison sentence. Many zoos do not have large enough enclosures to keep animals comfortable. The animals have limited freedom to move about. We often see even the fierce lions lying passively in their enclosures just waiting for their next meal to be served. They suffer from stress and boredom.【3】
Another thing we need to consider is the cost of maintaining a zoo. A lot of funds are needed to run a zoo. Money is needed to stock the zoo with all kinds of animals. 【4】 The animals need food and medical care. Special spaces need to be built to house each type of animals. More staff are needed to clean and maintain the zoo grounds.
【5】 If you want to see animals, I advise you to go on a safari. For conservation and research, set up sanctuaries like the Sepilok orangutan sanctuary in Sabah. It is kinder to leave the animals in their natural home-the wild.
A.This in turn causes animals to live shorter lives.
B.We have also heard about animals being mistreated.
C.However, some people argue against keeping wild animals in zoos.
D.They have to carry out research on the survival rate of this species.
E.Staff must be hired and trained to take care of each species of animals.
F.In addition, zoos allow scientists to study animal behavior more easily.
G.In conclusion, it is cruel and selfish to keep animals in an unnatural prison.
24、Humans’ invention of zero was vital for modern mathematics and science, but we’re not the only species to consider “nothing” a number. Parrots and monkeys understand the concept of zero, and now bees have joined the club, too.
Honey bees are known to have some numerical skills such as the ability to count to four, which may come in handy when keeping track of landmarks in their environment. To see whether these abilities extended to understanding zero, researchers trained 10 bees to identify the smaller of two numbers. Across a series of trials, they showed the insects two different pictures displaying a few black shapes on a white background. If the bees flew to the picture with the smaller number of shapes, they were given delicious sugar water, but if they flew toward the larger number, they were punished with bitter-tasting food.
Once the bees had learned to consistently make the correct choice, the researchers gave them a new choice: a white background containing no shapes at all. Even though the bees had never seen an empty picture before, 64% of the time they chose it rather than a picture containing two or three shapes, the authors report today in Science. This suggests that the insects understood that “zero” is less than two or three. And they weren’t just going for the empty picture because it was new and interesting. Another group of bees trained to always choose the larger number tended to pick the nonzero image in this test.
In further experiments, the researchers showed that bees’ understanding of zero was even more complex: for example, they were able to distinguish between one and zero-a challenge even for some other members of the zero club. Advanced numerical abilities like this could give animals an evolutionary advantage, helping them keep track of predators(捕食者)and food sources. And if an insect can display such a thorough grasp of the number zero, write the researchers, then this ability may be more common in the animal kingdom than we think.
【1】According to the trials, the researchers have found that bees ________.
A. have the same intelligence as parrots and monkeys
B. can count many numbers after being trained
C. can identify the smaller number quickly
D. understand the concept of zero
【2】The researchers trained another group of bees to ________ .
A. confirm the bees are able to identify the smaller number
B. find the big difference between the two groups of bees
C. prove the bees are interested in new things
D. show the bees can be distinguished easily
【3】What do the researchers suggest in further experiments?
A. Bees should be trained more.
B. Numerical abilities could help predators find bees.
C. Insects are better at understanding zero than animals.
D. Animals may display a thorough grasp of the number zero.
【4】What is the best the title for the text?
A. New Findings About Bees’ Concept of Zero
B. Experients on Bees’ Numerical Skills
C. Complex Trials About the Zero Club
D. A Science Report of the Species of Bees
