二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   After the season for giving. it is the one for throwing away. Each year in late December a massive amount of plastic packaging is thrown worldwide, most of which goes to landfill. Lithuania will do less damage than many countries. though. The county now recycles at a record level. Almost three -quarters of plastic packaging waste was recycled in 2017. the highest in Europe The EU average was 42%. and the worst performers. including Finland and France, under 30%.

Much of Lithuania's success is due to a deposit refund scheme(押金制)introduced in 2016. Customers pay €0.10 extra when buying drinks containers. After use, these can be fed into vending machines in shops. from whose mouth the deposit comes out. The machines’ contents are sent directly to recycling centers. By the end of 2017. 92% of all bottles and cans sold were being returned. close to 3 times the amount as before.

The Lithuanian government says the scheme has started a potential love for recycling in its citizens. Nearly 90% of Lithuanians have used the machines at least once. The eagerness of Lithuanian recyclers may come no from a love of the earth but from a low net worth. Lithuania has the second-most unequal income in Europe. A tenth of the population live on less than €245 (S272)a month. In big cities it is common to see people picking recyclable items out of bins to take to the machines.

Less litter and money for people who need it seems like a win-win. But it might not be best for the environment in the long run. In Germany -where a similar deposit refund scheme has been in place since 2003- the earnings from keeping the deposits from unreturned bottles seem to have discouraged producers form switching to more sustainable packaging.

1How much packaging waste did Lithuania recycle in 2017?

    A.Under 30%. B.Above 42%.

    C.About 74%. D.Nearly 90%

2What do we know about the deposit refund scheme?

A.The recycled bottles are sold to producers.

B.The amount of bottles increased 3 times.

C.Customers spend much more money on drinks.

D.Recyclers get a refund from the vending machine.

    3Why do Lithuanians enjoy recycling?

A.They love the earth. B.Some of them are short of money.

C.They are environmental protectors. D.The government promotes recycling.

4Which word best describes the author's attitude to the scheme?

    A.Objective. B.Tolerant.

    C.Positive. D.Conservative,

  • 22、   You’re in your office when you learn there’s someone with a gun wandering outside. You can hear gunshots and screams. What do you do?

That’s the challenge for users of a new virtual (虚拟)reality program called SurviVR, designed to train employees how to deal with an active shooter situation in the workplace. The program works with HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset released earlier this year.

An active shooter situation is when an armed person or people actively shoot in a small, populated area with the intention to kill. There were 20 such situations in the United States last year and 20 the year before, according to FBI statistics, resulting in a total of 231 deaths. This year saw the deadliest active shooter situation in US history, with 49 people killed in a nightclub in Orlando.

In the training situation, users have four choices. They can lock themselves in the office. They can hide, perhaps in the office closet. They can run for an exit. Or they can use something in the office—a computer or a cup a pair of scissors-as a weapon to fight the shooter. This is an improvement on standard active shooter training. Gallo says, which typically teachers people to lock themselves in place and hide. The lock down method is often ineffective, he says, and has resulted in many deaths in recent years.

In the training’s basic level, no one gets killed. But as the trainings become more advanced, players who make a wrong choice be shot. There’s no blood; the screen simply turns black slowly.

If this sounds terrifying, that’s the point, says Gallo. There are plenty of training programs to teach employees how to deal with workplace violence, sometimes involving role play with toy guns. But these trainings are basically games. Gallo says, with employees relaxed and even enjoying themselves. To teach people what they really need to know for an active shooter situation, they need to be scared.

SurviVR will take the fear and turn it into confidence. Gallo says.

1What’s the author’s purpose of describing a dangerous scene in Para. 1?

A.To attract the readers’ attention on the new virtual reality program.

B.To show the challenge that the readers are required to face.

C.To warn the readers of the possible dangers in the working place.

D.To inform the readers of the correct response in such a situation

2What is the suggested response in the standard active shooter training?

    A.Fighting the shooter

    B.Running for the exit

    C.Using a computer as a weapon

    D.Locking down

3What does Gallo think of the training programs involving role play with toy guns?

    A.Searing B.Violent

    C.Ineffective D.Helpful

4What would be the best title?

A.A New Virtual Reality Program on Active Shooter Training

B.What Should You Do When Meeting Gunshots in the Workplace?

C.How to Deal with an Active Shooter Situation?

D.Employees Need to Be Scared of the Workplace Violence.

  • 23、Nighttime tours and performances are becoming increasingly popular in China, as rising daytime temperatures are cooling the heat for visiting popular tourist spots and other attractions, a new report said.

For sightseeing destinations and travel agencies, nighttime travel lengthens tourists’ stay time, and helps bring new business opportunities. It has also become a tool to stimulate the upgrading of leisure tourism consumption, industry experts said.

“Recently, a lot of tourists have chosen to stay in hotels during the day, and go out at night. For example, taking a cruise tour and walking around the Hongya Cave in Chongqing are quite popular,” said Fang Hongfeng, general manager of the activities business unit at Ctrip. “Travelers can appreciate the dynamic beauty of the fantastic lights of the mountainous city, and tens of thousands of people have booked cruise tickets to go sightseeing on boats. We are bullish on the growth for night cruise tours in the city,” he said.

In fact, for some cities, old towns, theme parks, scenic spots, riversides, and astronomical tourism sites, the scenes are more attractive and fun during nighttime than daytime, and travelers feel more comfortable with cooler temperatures and smaller crowds, Ctrip said. Among those travelers who like to go out at night, men account for two-thirds of the total. Besides, nearly half of the travelers are aged between 30 and 39, followed by those who were born in the 1990s and 2000s, Ctrip found.

Despite the popularity of nighttime tours and events, industry experts said nighttime travel means higher requirements on traffic facilities and safety management. “Not every city is suitable for developing nighttime travel products. For local governments and markets, nighttime tours require creating some innovative events featured for the night as these shape brand impact. They should also attract the concentration of related service sectors and have the ability to grow sustainably,” said Ashley Ramsey, a researcher at Peking University.

【1】Which of the following best describes daytime tours during summer?

    A.Expensive.

    B.Undesirable.

    C.Favorable.

    D.Promising.

【2】What does nighttime travel industrial boost mean to local people?

A.They may get more income from tourism.

B.They will suffer from upgrading living cost.

C.They will benefit from smooth traffic.

D.They could live a leisure routine.

【3】Who will the agencies of nighttime travel probably target at?

    A.A local in his 30s.

    B.Rich businesswomen.

    C.Junior students summer camps.

    D.Middle-aged couples.

【4】What can we say about the growth of the nighttime travel according to Ashley Ramsey?

    A.It fuels the depressed economy.

B.It is a replacement of daytime travel.

C.It calls for a better government service.

D.It is a disaster for locals.

  • 24、Kindness: Nature or Nurture?

It is a typical scene in a preschool classroom: Daniel and Helen are each happily playing with their own toys when Helen suddenly eyes Daniel's toy and wants it, and she wants it NOW. Daniel sees Helen's desire for his toy and kindly extends it to her. Helen snatches the toy, declaring “Mine!"and runs off across the classroom to show off her new toy to her other friends. Daniel does not mind.

In this scene, Daniel displays prosocial behavior, which is characterized by concern for others and an intention to help them. Helen, on the other hand, demonstrated selfish behavior. 【1】. Alternatively, was there some kind of genetic factor that made Daniel inherently generous and Helen naturally greedy? As it turns out, the development of prosocial behavior is a matter of both nature and nurture.

Nature and nurture work together constantly. One of the ways nature and nurture are linked is through oxytocin, a hormone with a wide array of targets throughout the human body. 【2】. In humans, natural oxytocin levels are related to feelings of love and trust in intimate relationships both between parent and child and between romantic partners. They are also associated with empathy and subsequent generosity toward strangers. When oxytocin is administered intra-nasally in human subjects, researchers usually observe an increase in generosity, trust, eye gaze, and the ability to infer the emotions of others.

【3】 . While both Helen and Daniel have oxytocin circulating in their bodies, they may have different forms of the receptor specific to this hormone. Researchers studying the gene for the oxytocin receptor have identified three different forms, called polymorphisms: AA, AG and GG. People with the GG polymorphism tend to be empathetic compared to those with the AA or AG polymorphism.

However, genetic difference is better described as a tendency toward a particular type of behavior. 【4】 . This is where the influence of parenting comes in. But what does this have to do with oxytocin? When parents are given oxytocin, it leads to the release of natural oxytocin in their infants. Affectionate touch of and play with their children trigger oxytocin release in parents, activating brain circuits devoted to care giving.

A.Was/it because of the way the two were raised?

B.It is the environment that shapes how genes are expressed.

C.The intimate bonds and activities of parental care increase oxytocin.

D.The reason why Helen and Daniel responded differently to the situation above can be explained in part by genetics.

E.If scientific research has identified a gene that can influence our empathy, does that mean Helen was driven by greed?

F.It is best known for its role in childbirth, but recent studies have revealed its importance in the regulation of social behavior.

  • 26、His father said, “All set, boy?” and Jeremy nodded, picking up his gun with awkward gloved hands. His father pushed open the door and they went out into the freezing dawn together. Ordinarily Jeremy would take out his camera to record the scenery, but not this morning. This was the morning, particularly sacred, when 14-year-old Jeremy would go duck hunting for the first time.

However, he hated it, and had hated the whole idea since his father bought him a gun. But he was determined to go through with it. He loved his father, and wanted his approval more than anything in the world.

They came to a narrow and hidden place facing the bay. Jeremy sat down nervously and waited. To reduce fear, he took a picture of his father against the clean water. Then he put the camera hurriedly on the grass and picked up his gun.

Jeremy got his gun ready. “I'll let you shoot first,” his father said, loading his own gun. “You know, I've been waiting for a long time for this day. Just the two of us..."He broke off, bending forward, eyes narrowed. “There's a small flight heading this way now. Keep your head down. I'll give you the word.”

The sun came out. Jeremy could see everything clearly: his father's face, tense and eager; the white frost on the gun. His heart was beating wildly. He prayed, “Don't let them come, please!”

But they kept coming. "Four black,” his father said. “One mallard.” High above, Jeremy heard the pulsing whistle of wings as the flight began to circle. The mallard was leading, his feet dropping down, reaching for the silver-colored water. Closer, closer... “Get set,” his father whispered.

“Now!” cried Jeremy's father. “Take them!”

Jeremy felt his body obey. He stood up, holding the gun. In the same instant, the wild ducks saw the gunners and flew. “Shoot!” said something sharply in Jeremy's brain. But up went the mallard higher still, until suddenly he caught the full force of the wind and flew away, out of range.
