二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Scholars have found music and language seem closely linked But how? Some similarities are obvious. Both can express emotion. And both are highly social. AI a structural level the parallel are striking too. With a limited set of notes or words, and a limited set of rules, a limitless variety of novel melodies or sentences can be created Animal communication, by contrast, is only able to convey a limited number of thoughts.

Aniruddh Patel of Tufts University has argued that music and language, rather than being essentially the same, rely on the same bit of the brain. In an experiment he presented his subjects with a sentence that contained a grammatical trick ("The scientist confirmed the hypothesis was being studied in his lab"), revealing one word at a time. The subjects were to press a button for each word at their own pace. Many pushed at the unexpected “was. "The scientist confirmed the hypothesis" seemed a complete sentence.

They also heard music as they performed this exercise. Some were treated to a new chord (和弦) in a pleasing progression with every word that was revealed. Others herd an annoying chord at the moment they reached the trick word "was". Both groups slowed down but those given the discordant(不和谐的) notes did so much more.

Another striking contrast lies in the range of human talent for each ability. Nearly all children produce complex sentences by the age of three and become fluent speakers just a few years after that. By contrast, only a minority of adults are talented musicians; even fewer are skilled composers of new works.

Victor Wooten, a music teacher, points out, children learn to talk by being constantly surrounded by fluent older speakers who are practicing with them almost from birth. Their awkward efforts are encouraged. On the other. hand, students of music often keep company with other beginners, and are stopped when having a mistake.

It is not that simple, thinks Jay Keyser, a professor of linguistics. For him, music is not like spoken prose, which almost everyone can learn without any difficulties, but instead resembles a specific form of language: poetry, whose rhythm is hard to find.

【1】What is the similarity between music and language at the structural level?

    A.Both have complicated structures.

    B.Both have strict grammatical rules.

    C.Both can form unlimited structures.

    D.Both can express limited meanings.

【2】What can we learn about Aniruddh Patel's experiment?

A.Different music varies greatly in the impact on people's life.

B.Appreciation of music helped them understand the sentence.

C.Understanding of the structure was not affected by the music.

D.The discordant music made the sentence structure more difficult.

【3】What leads to the difference according to Victor Wooten?

A.The influence cast by those around them.

B.The age when they start to acquire the abilities.

C.The way their mistakes in learning are handled.

D.The expectations they get from those around them.

【4】What does Jay Keyser want to say in the last paragraph?

A.It is difficult to compose music.

B.Language can hardly make life fun.

C.Music is not as easy to learn.

    D.Music comes from spoken prose.

  • 22、   For the many eager readers who hope to find some solutions to life’s questions through reading, a newly-published Chinese-English bilingual (双语的) version of How Will You Measure Your Life by Clayton Christensen, a professor at Harvard Business School in the United States, might provide a few answers. It has been released as part of a series of books, entitled Harvard Business Review Classics.

In How Will You Measure Your Life, the book’s author raises three questions: How can I be sure that I’ll be happy in my career? How can I be sure that my relationships with my spouse (配偶) and my family become lasting source of happiness? How can be sure’ I’ll stay out of prison?

He then provides his understanding and thoughts into them by using lessons from some of the world’s greatest businesses.

Christensen’s ideas have inspired a large number of people around the globe. Roan Kang, general manager of marketing and operations of Microsoft’s Greater China Region, is one of them. He was lucky to have met the author himself when Christensen delivered speech to Kang’s company a few years ago.

“I agree with Christensen’s point that too many people use material wealth or social status as ways to measure success, while in reality, it is doing purposeful work that helps others and improves society that is truly meaningful,” Kang says, adding that he hopes the book will inspire more young people.

Kang, 45, also supports Christensen’s idea that “your time is the most precious of resources”, which he says, is something he learned firsthand while working with Bill Gates.

“After you’ve’ figured out what your top priorities (优先级) are in life and in your work, you have to be strict with yourself and make sure you constantly put your time into those priorities.”

B.Practical ways to earn good money in business

C.How to communicate with lawyers and judges.

D.Getting on well with family does benefit one’s life.

3What can we conclude from Roan Kang’s words according to the text?

A.Material wealth is no longer the way to measure success.

B.Making the best of time is a promise to efficiency.

C.Family affairs in our life should be the first to deal with.

D.Doing purposeful work can inspire more young people.

  • 23、For more than a decade, a team of researchers have studied the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet as it responds to a warming climate. But while much of their focus has been on waters impacts on ice sheet change, their most recent research findings have overturned the order of their thinking. Meierbachtol, Harper and their team discovered that changes in the ice sheet have a real impact on the massive groundwater system underlying Greenland.

This latest discovery occurred thanks to a marriage of drilling techniques. International cooperators made an angled hole 650 meters through bedrock underneath a Greenland glacier (冰川)to measure groundwater conditions under the ice. Meanwhile, researchers drilled 32 holes from atop the glacier, through nearly a kilometer of ice, to measure water conditions at the area between ice and bedrock, which forms an important boundary controlling groundwater flow below. After drilling, the team fixed sensors in the ice column and at the ice sheet bed to measure ice dynamics and water conditions as water flows under the ice.

“By studying areas covered by ice 10,000 years ago, we have known that the huge mass and vast amounts of water from melting ice can impact the underlying groundwater,” Meierbachtol said. “It’s generally accepted that the groundwater is sleeping over decades to centuries and its response to ice sheet change is long: thousands of years. But what we’ve shown here is that it is immediate.”

This new understanding could have important subsequent effects on how Greenland’s thinning impacts the Arctic. The thinning ice could reduce the rate of groundwater flow to the ocean, changing the water temperature and salinity (盐度)balance that is important for ocean circulation (循环)patterns. “In thinking about the complex feedbacks from Greenland’s ongoing change, we have really ignored the groundwater component,” Harper said.

【1】How do the researchers feel about the result of the recent study?

    A.Satisfied.

    B.Disappointed.

    C.Surprised.

    D.Doubtful.

【2】What contributes most to the new research about the Greenland Ice Sheet?

    A.Fixing sensors into ice sheet.

    B.Close international cooperation.

    C.Advanced rock drilling technology.

D.A combination of two drilling approaches.

【3】What is a misunderstanding of the groundwater under glaciers?

A.It has a very large volume.

B.It is inactive for a long time.

    C.Its component is complex.

    D.Its temperature is changeable.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Water Impacts the Greenland’s Ice Sheet

B.Longlasting Effects of Global Warming on the Arctic

C.Newly Discovered Groundwater Resources in Greenland

D.Greenland’s Groundwater Changes with Thinning Ice Sheet

  • 24、Unlike produce such as peaches or bananas, strawberries begin to decline as soon as they are picked. Scientists have been working on a special protection that delays spoilage by slowing water loss and oxidation (氧化).

Every fruit and vegetable breathes. Once a piece of produce is picked from a tree or plant, it continues to breathe, aging slowly, until it begins to break down. Microorganisms then move in, causing it to spoil. Refrigeration can delay the process, but only so much.

Some scientists now think they can make your bananas, avocados, and other fresh produce last up to twice as long by delaying spoilage. Apeel, a start-up in Santa Barbara, California, has created a way to remove lipids from several popular crops and transform each type into a powder. Dissolved in water and applied to fruits or vegetables, it forms an edible(可食用的) barrier to lock moisture in and microorganisms out.

Farmers can apply a version of the solution in the field, or distributors can use the rinse (冲洗) on the packing line, extending a fruit’s shelf life by days or even weeks. The FDA recognizes the process as safe, and earlier this year it was approved for use on organic produce.

Giving shoppers more time with their fresh food is one purpose. But Apeel’s higher goal is to fight food waste and reduce the number of refrigerated trucks and ships that race between fields and stores to deliver food at its peak. The technology can also allow more crops to be delivered to more places farther and farther from where they’re grown. “You can imagine a world without seasonality of fresh produce,” says James Rogers, Apeel’s CEO and a materials scientist.

In the meantime, who couldn’t use a few extra days before that fruit in the fridge starts to mold?

1What has the company, Apeel, invented?

    A. A strategy to fight food waste by mixing fruits or vegetables with crops.

    B. A solution to get rid of what causes fresh fruits or vegetables spoil.

    C. A method to remove crop lipids and change them into nutritious powder.

    D. A way to lock moisture in and microorganisms out by forming an edible barrier.

2According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

    A. Fruits and vegetables picked from trees can go bad easily without any protection.

    B. Scientists are aimed at a new way to prevent fresh produce from molding soon.

    C. Farmers and distributors can use what Apeel has created but it proves unsafe.

    D. Shoppers are among those who can benefit a lot from Apeel’s new idea.

3What do James Rogers’s words mean?

    A. Every fruit and vegetable will stay fresh all year around in the future.

    B. The food fresh keeping technology contributes to long-distance transporting.

    C. You can get any fresh produce in any season in the future.

    D. You can use the fridge to store the fresh produce for a longer time.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Vacations are a chance to take break from work, see the world and enjoy time with family. But do they make you happier? Researchers from the Netherlands set out to measure the effect that vacations have on overall happiness and how long it lasts. They studied happiness levels among 1, 530 Dutch adults, 974 of whom took a vacation during the 32-week study period. The study showed that the largest lift in happiness comes from the simple act of planning vacation. In the study, the effect of vacation expectation lifted happiness for eight weeks.

After the vacation, happiness quickly dropped back to baseline levels for most people. How much stress or relaxation a traveler experienced on the trip appeared to influence post-vacation happiness. There was no post-trip happiness benefit for travelers who said the vacation was “neutral” or “stressful.”

Surprisingly, even those travelers who described the trip as “relaxing” showed no additional jump in happiness after the trip. “They were no happier than people who had not been on holiday,” said the lead author, Jeroen Nawijn, tourism research lecturer at Breda University. The only vacationers who experienced an increase in happiness after the trip were those who reported feeling “very relaxed” on their vacation. Among those people, the vacation happiness effect lasted for just two weeks after the trip before returning to baseline levels.

One reason vacations don’t increase happiness after the trip may have to do with the stress of returning to work. And for some travelers, the holiday itself was stressful. “In comments from people, the thing they mentioned most referred to disagreements with a travel partner or being ill,” Mr. Nawijn said.

Since most of the happiness boost comes from planning and expecting a vacation, the study suggests that people may get more out of several small trips a year than one big vacation, Mr Nawijn said.
